Crystal Palace fans excited by potential Batshuayi deal

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace are closing in on the Deadline Day signing of Michy Batshuayi from Chelsea, per Sky Sports.

The Belgium striker has, per the aforementioned report, agreed personal terms with the Eagles as they seek to bolster their attack.

Football FanCast reported earlier on Thursday that West Ham had pulled out of negotiations to take Batshuayi on loan, such were his wage demands. The striker wanted £170,000-per-week, while Chelsea were keen to receive a £2million loan fee.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

Batshuayi had been keen to join Tottenham Hotspur, but Chelsea were always unlikely to let him leave for their top four and London rivals.

Palace have now seemingly moved to secure the striker – the news was first broke by Kaveh Solhekol and has since been followed up by Sky Sports’ full report.

And fans can hardly believe the prospect of the eleventh-hour deal being pulled off by Roy Hodgson’s men.

Women's Ballon d'Or 2023: Nominees revealed for the Golden Ball with Spain World Cup star Aitana Bonmati the hot favourite

With two-time defending champion Alexia Putellas out of the running after a season decimated by injuries, a new winner will be crowned on October 30

The Women's Ballon d'Or remains a relatively new trophy on the world football scene, but lifting the Golden Ball is quickly becoming a dream for many of the world's best players. And after a memorable 12 months for the women's game, the shortlist of nominees for the 2023 award has been revealed.

The 2022-23 season was one dominated by Spanish football, as Barcelona won both their domestic title and the Champions League, before La Roja sealed the World Cup in thrilling fashion after a superb tournament in Australia and New Zealand.

Despite that, two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas is out of the running for this year's award having missed most of the campaign with a knee injury, with her club and international team-mate, Aitana Bonmati, the current favourite to succeed Putellas in lifting the Golden Ball.

We will have to wait until the ceremony on Monday, October 30 to find out whether it is Bonmati or someone else who claims the prize, but for now, here are the players who have been shortlisted for football's ultimate individual honour:

Rafael Leao, Marcus Rashford and PSG's potential summer transfer targets to begin the post-Kylian Mbappe era

The Parisians may be losing a club legend, but they have plenty of options as they look to spend the surplus cash he'll leave behind

Kylian Mbappe's departure is not a good thing for Paris Saint-Germain. They will lose the club's all-time leading goalscorer, a global superstar, and the face of French football.

However, there is some solace to be found in the money that they can now spend to flesh out the side. With Mbappe's astronomical salary off the books, the Parisians are ready to spend big this summer in an ambitious rebuilding mission. Transfer guru reported that they are after a top-tier attacking player, midfielder, and perhaps a long-term centre-back replacement for Marquinhos.

As such, the rumour mill has immediately gone into overdrive, and so who are the players PSG are likely to be targeting once the transfer window opens this summer as they move on from Mbappe? GOAL breaks down 11 top options…

Getty ImagesMarcus Rashford (Manchester United)

We've been here before on more than one occasion. PSG's interest in Rashford has simmered away for years now, the Parisians having repeatedly shown interest in signing Manchester United's left-sided forward.

There is a sense that for all of his quality, Rashford has been rather held back by his club. United are too chaotic, too turbulent for individuals to truly thrive. And although the now-completed partial takeover by Sir Jim Ratcliffe seems poised to bring in a sense of stability, Rashford may not be able to hit his best levels for the Red Devils.

PSG would seem a promising exit route. With Mbappe gone, Rashford would take over the mantle of being , while Luis Enrique's direct, counter-attacking football suits Rashford, who is at his best running in behind and taking on defenders in transition.

For all of the tactical sentiment, though, a Rashford exit from Old Trafford seems unlikely. He is, after all, United through and through, and less than 12 months removed from signing a bumper new contract. Despite his inconsistent form in 2023-24, it's improbable that the glitz of Paris turns his head.

Advertisement(C)GettyImagesRafael Leao (AC Milan)

The reports linking them with Rashford suggest that PSG want a direct replacement for Mbappe, and in truth, Leao seems much more suited to such a role. The Milan star is not quite the same player as Mbappe; he's taller, more powerful, and a better passer.

They do, however, share some similar traits. Both are excellent ball carriers, eager to take on a man, and thrive when they have space to run into. And at 24, Leao still has plenty of development to come.

There are some concerns that have to be taken into consideration. Leao is a good goalscorer, but he's never netted more than 20 in a season. His ability to play against the kind of low blocks that PSG routinely face is also not quite clear.

Still, if the idea is for PSG to sign a marquee left-sided forward who can replicate the kind of influence that Mbappe had, then Leao might be that man.

GettyVictor Osimhen (Napoli)

Osimhen is leaving Napoli at the end of the season – this much we know. The question is, where does he go? Chelsea and Arsenal seem to be the duelling favourites, two sides with a clear need for a No.9, and Osimhen is the best on the market.

But PSG can simply never be counted out. There have been some scattered links with Osimhen already, with one of those to have reported that the Parisians are in the mix for his signature. It helps that football advisor Luis Campos once signed Osimhen when he was in a similar role at Lille.

The tactical fit is an imperfect one. Osimhen is best used as a central striker, and has all of the traits of a dominant modern No.9. His arrival would certainly seem to clash with the signings of Goncalo Ramos and Randal Kolo Muani – two big-money arrivals for the Parisians last summer who haven't quite hit the heights yet.

But if PSG want the best goalscorer out there to replace Mbappe, Osimhen is their man.

Getty ImagesKvicha Kvaratskhelia (Napoli)

Since we're on the topic of Napoli… Kvaratskhelia was the biggest surprise in European football last year, a largely unknown Georgian winger who became one of the most dominant players in the world at his position. He was a focal point of Napoli's remarkable title-winning season, proving to be an able goalscorer and devastating creator for a fluid attack.

Naturally, exit talk started by the end of the season, and he has been linked with a move to Real Madrid move for some time. PSG, though, appears to be a more natural fit if Kvaratskhelia is to leave Italy.

The Parisians need a left-winger, and Kvaratskhelia is one of the best out there. Napoli will certainly be reluctant to sell, as they are set to lose Osimhen this summer, and won't want to see their other big-name attacker leave. But with PSG's money, and the lure of a starring role, this one could happen.

According to Sport, Modric will leave Real Madrid when his contract expires at the end of the season. Over the summer he reportedly rejected a contract offer from a Saudi club worth £120 million a season ($149.5m). At 38 years old, he is expected to retire in the Saudi Pro League.

Modric signed a one-year contract at the end of last season as he believed he could still make a significant contribution at the elite level. After 12 trophy-laden years at the Bernabeu, it looks like Modric is ready to move on.

WHAT THEY SAID

A January departure has already been ruled out by Real Madrid's general director Jose Angel Sanchez. He recently said: "We have no open negotiations with the Saudi Arabian League for a possible departure in January nor any intention to sell him [Modric] at this time."

Is playing out from the back worth the risk? David Raya, Andre Onana and Robert Sanchez struggles won't stop Premier League managers from giving goalkeepers licence to use their feet

Some of the world's top 'keepers have already made high-profile errors this season when trying to get involved in build-up play

The summer transfer window ushered in a new era for elite Premier League goalkeepers, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham all replacing their No.1s – at considerable expense in some cases.

Since then, each of the new arrivals, aside from Spurs stopper Guglielmo Vicario, have been placed under intense scrutiny. Andre Onana has endured the most challenging start, with the new United 'keeper never far from the headlines in his opening months at Old Trafford. Questions have also been asked of Robert Sanchez at Chelsea who, after a bright beginning, made a game-changing error in Saturday's 2-2 draw against Arsenal.

However, nowhere has the goalkeeping debate raged more aggressively than at the Emirates Stadium. Aaron Ramsdale is a popular figure in north London, but that did not stop Mikel Arteta pushing the club to sign David Raya from Brentford this summer.

Arteta has since been criticised for banishing the England international to the bench in favour of Raya, and the Spaniard's shaky, recent displays have done nothing but added further fuel to the argument.

Getty ImagesWhy do teams play out from the back?

The common thread running through all of these clubs' decisions to sign new goalkeepers is their desire to add a No.1 who's comfortable with the ball. David de Gea's lack of passing ability, for example, was a major bone of contention during his lengthy spell at Old Trafford, while Hugo Lloris was sometimes accused of indecisiveness in possession. In Chelsea's case, they wanted to continue what Kepa Arrizabalaga had been doing. Arsenal wanted similar continuity.

'Playing out from the back' is not a new concept, but it's become nearly omnipresent at the top level and beyond over the past five years or so. Only a handful of Premier League sides regularly play long from their goalkeeper, and even teams in the lowest reaches of the footballing pyramid, both in the UK and abroad, have started asking their stoppers to pass it short. It's even infected this writer's Sunday League team – to mixed success.

Although it makes some match-going fans wince in the stands, the benefits of this style are clear. On the most basic level, playing out allows teams to control games and move up the pitch gradually while retaining their shape, making it easier to implement the coach's attacking vision.

The goalkeeper being heavily involved in the first phase of this patient build-up is absolutely vital, as it gives the team in possession a numerical advantage. Shot-stoppers who thrive playing this style are rare, as they require strong passing technique, elite composure and the tactical awareness to think two or three passes ahead so their team can beat the opposition's press.

Finding a player that ticks all of these boxes is hard: that's why Alisson Becker and Ederson – viewed as extravagant overpays by Liverpool and Manchester City at the time – have proved to be excellent investments.

AdvertisementGetty/GOALArteta was brutal in the summer

Ramsdale performed better than many expected after joining Arsenal from relegated Sheffield United for £30 million ($36.7m) in 2021, but he remains some way off the level of those aforementioned Brazilians, and Arteta clearly felt an upgrade was necessary.

The Gunners were long-term admirers of Raya, and it had been clear for some time that he wouldn't be signing a new deal at Brentford, so it was little surprise when he rocked up in north London. It was brutal for Ramsdale – who was soon dropped for the Spaniard.

Since that move, Arteta has been criticised from all angles. Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel claimed having two Premier League-level starters would lead to each player looking to "prove themselves" when selected, which could result in errors. Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino chimed in too, calling the decision "dangerous", and referencing a similar situation he experienced at Paris Saint-Germain, when he had to keep both Gianluigi Donnarumma and Keylor Navas happy.

(C)GettyImagesBut he made the right choice

It may seem harsh, but it's easy to see why Arteta took the decision he did. Statistically, Raya was leaps and bounds ahead of Ramsdale in terms of shot-stopping last season. The Spaniard prevented a total of 5.0 xG for Brentford, while his now-Arsenal team-mate let in an excess 2.0 xG. Raya also outshone Ramsdale when it came to dominating his box, claiming 8.7 percent of the crosses he faced – the second-highest in the Premier League – compared to just 5.8% from the man he's replaced this season.

Raya also distributed the ball more effectively, registering far more successful passes and completing around 70% of his long balls over 40 yards – far more than Ramsdale. Even though Brentford were more set up to playing long than Arsenal were, this difference is striking and speaks to Raya's strength as a ball-playing goalkeeper.

GettyTeething problems

However, what should work in theory does not always in practise – especially in the Premier League pressure cooker. And since claiming the No.1 jersey, Raya has experienced a few shaky moments.

He was culpable for Lens' first goal in the Gunners' shock Champions League defeat earlier this month, failing to find Takehiro Tomiyasu when under pressure. Raya was shaky in the first half against Man City too, almost allowing Julian Alvarez to close him down and score in the first half. During that game, the Emirates crowd did not help his nerves, becoming increasingly unsettled as Arsenal played closer and closer to their own goal.

Then there was the Chelsea error this weekend, with Raya being completely wrongfooted by Mykhailo Mudryk's cross-cum-shot. Passing straight to Cole Palmer on the edge of the penalty area in the same half did little to quell the uneasy atmosphere in the away end, either.
