Coventry boss Mark Robins slams 'toenail offside' decision that deprived Sky Blues of all-time great FA Cup semi-final triumph against Man Utd

Coventry City manager Mark Robins was left frustrated due to a 'toenail offside' decision that denied his team a historic win over Manchester United.

  • Robins slammed 'toenail offside' against Man Utd
  • Coventry's last-gasp goal in extra time denied by VAR
  • The Red Devils clinched the clash 4-2 in penalties
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Championship side staged a remarkable comeback in the second half of their FA Cup semi-final clash after Manchester United took a formidable three-goal lead by the 58th minute of the match courtesy of goals from Scott McTominay, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes.

United States men's national team star Haji Wright scored the equaliser from the penalty spot in the 95th minute to take the game to extra time. In the 121st minute, Victor Torp scored what could have been the winning goal from Wright's assist but VAR disallowed it as they found the USMNT attacker in an offside position.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Sky Blues' manager Robins was left disappointed after the game as the Red Devils pipped his side 4-2 in the tie-breaker to book a final berth for the second consecutive season. The English coach slammed VAR's decision of disallowing the goal as he felt Wright was offside only by a 'toenail'.

  • WHAT MARK ROBINS SAID

Speaking to , the Coventry boss said, "Bitterly disappointed, I'm proud as well. Someone said to me I don't think any team have been as close to a final without getting there. We deserved to go through, we were 20 seconds away and a toenail offside, it's ridiculous.

"We wanted to stay in the game in the first half. The second goal on the stroke of half-time was disappointing. We were ready to make changes before the third. You try not to let the game get away from you. We thought it might be a consolation and then the second loops in and it gives us a lifeline. Your tails are up then. Haji sticks a penalty away and all to play for.

He added, "They hit the bar, we hit the bar. Another goal with 20 seconds to go. It took an age. The fourth official said there was nothing wrong with it [initially]. A toenail offside. Disappointed but we have to be really proud. Once the dust settles a lot of people will talk about that game for a long time. We needed to try to get a bit of control and quality. We didn't have that. We kept giving the ball away so we couldn't build any momentum.

"It looked a little bit more like us and that's why I'm proud of them. They were incredible for the last hour. The mentality changes because you've almost won it and then you haven't. It puts you on the backfoot going into the penalty shootout. Thirty seconds later you're in a shootout."

Johri case: Inquiry committee criticised for 'scaring away complainants'

The independent inquiry committee looking into allegations of sexual misconduct against the BCCI CEO Rahul Johri has been criticised for using language that will “dissuade and discourage people from coming forward”. That’s the view of leading women’s right lawyers contacted by ESPNcricinfo after Aditya Verma, who sought to depose before the committee, said he felt the first response he received from the three-member panel was trying to “scare away complainants”.Verma, the whistleblower whose original litigation resulted in the Lodha reforms, had earlier written a letter to the BCCI’s Committee of Administrators (CoA), accusing it of “hushing up” a previous complaint of alleged sexual harassment against Johri from a BCCI employee. The CoA has never acknowledged such a complaint. Now, Verma aside, former Mumbai captain Shishir Hattangadi has also offered to help out with a fresh complaint of alleged sexual misconduct that pertains to a time when Johri was the board CEO.Responding to the messages received from Verma and Hattangadi, the committee said in an email: “At the outset we expect from you to demonstrate your bona fides and locus standi to put forth your statement, material before the committee.” ESPNcricinfo has seen this email, which goes on to ask of the complainants: “Are you friend/guardian, close relative, husband of the alleged sexually harassed lady or woman, employee of BCCI or a visitor to the premises office or in some way associated with the affairs of BCCI? How are you connected with the subject matter?”In his response to that email, Verma has objected to both the language used and the concept of locus standi (as defined by the Cambridge dictionary, locus standi is the right or ability to bring a legal action to a court of law or to appear in a court). ESPNcricinfo has seen Verma’s response, in which he has also pointed out that a member of the independent committee, Veena Gowda, had been excluded from the mail sent by the committee. Gowda is also an external member of internal complaints committees at the BCCI and other corporations under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013. Moreover, the committee has failed to maintain confidentiality in communication by marking both Verma and Hattangadi on the same email.”This committee needs to appreciate the fact that the principle of locus standi does not stand the test of public interest,” Verma wrote, referring to earlier Supreme Court rulings that have found the BCCI to be “discharging public functions”.”In the case of BCCI, which is a body that performs some public functions, the organisation cannot hide behind the veil of locus standi, especially in the case where their top functionary is accused of sexual harassment or worse. An attempt by the committee to thwart a member of the public from bringing to its notice information that may be relevant flies in the face of the judgments of the Hon’ble Supreme Court.”Verma went on to write: “The message that your email carries seems to be one to scare away complainants rather than to make it conducive for them to complain about being harassed. It lacks the basic sensitivity required to deal with such situations.”This is a sentiment that finds resonance with prominent women’s rights lawyers. Vrinda Grover, lawyer, researcher and human and women’s rights activist, told ESPNcricinfo: “The communication of the committee should encourage people to come forward because the probe is against a very powerful, high-profile man. The tone and tonality should not dissuade or frighten the person putting the statement forward. The way this [email] is crafted, the presumption is that I am a motivated person if I am giving a statement out. The presumption should be otherwise, because I am not the one you are inquiring into.”The committee is completely right in asking the person to present a statement and/or material evidence that is relevant, but to ask a person to first demonstrate their bona fides (as per the Cambridge dictionary, bona fides refers to the abilities and experience that make someone suitable for a particular job or activity, or proof of these abilities and experience) is quite unwarranted. Under any proceeding, whether it’s an inquiry or a trial, the witness must be relevant, but to ask a witness to prove their bona fides is in my view counter-productive. That will dissuade and discourage people from coming forward and the objective of the committee will be lost.”I would go to the extent of saying that they [the committee] should be asking that person, ‘Would you want us to provide you confidentiality? Do you apprehend any retaliation? Do you need any support?’ That is how you encourage witnesses.”Also for a committee examining a complaint of sexual harassment, it is imperative that all communications and proceedings of the committee are sensitive and respectful. For instance, it’s a bit baffling why the email insists on making a distinction between a lady and a woman. Also, why does the email specifically ask if the person is the husband, when it has already asked the person to clarify whether they are a family member or relative. Surely that would include a husband too? It’s very crucial for all communications of the committee to demonstrate gender sensitivity, respect and impartiality.”Abha Singh, a former civil servant and a lawyer in the High Court of Judicature in Bombay, told ESPNcricinfo: “Such types of emails by an official committee are uncalled for. An inquiry committee should themselves exhort a person to provide information and leads, which may help unravel the hidden evidence. If a person has some incriminating information against the delinquent, it is the duty of the committee to call him for a statement and to interrogate him, in case they find there is something amiss or if they feel that more evidence or clarifications are necessary.”In short, the disposition of the committee should be to welcome informers and those who possess incriminating evidence. To send such discouraging emails would not be conducive to a complete and in-depth probe. They are a regrettable aberration on part of the committee.”Gowda aside, the three-member independent committee includes Rakesh Sharma, former judge at Allahabad High Court, and Barkha Singh, former chairperson of Delhi Commission for women.Today is the last date for people – within or outside BCCI – to reach out to the inquiry committee on the e-mail address provided ([email protected]). Over the next two days, the committee will study the material it receives and then call people it “considers necessary to appear and depose”. It is understood that if the committee seeks more time, the CoA will be willing to extend the time frame to complete the probe.

Paine, Khawaja the heroes in Australia's great escape

Never mind the last over. This was never meant to go to the last session, with Pakistan having left 140 overs for themselves to bowl Australia out. But Australia, spearheaded by a superhuman effort from Usman Khawaja, who batted for 302 balls, and captain Tim Paine at the end, kept Pakistan out, ensuring a draw that simply wasn’t an option for much of this match. It required Nathan Lyon batting with his captain for the last 11 overs, when it looked like the visitors would succumb after Khawaja had been dismissed, but Paine and Lyon rallied. As Pakistan prowled, Paine dug deep. The records might be meaningless to an Australian side playing to salvage their reputations after the disaster of Cape Town a few months ago. After that, Paine said he wanted to captain an Australia side the fans could be proud of. It’s taken no more than one Test match to achieve that, with Australia summoning all their powers of grit and fortitude to ensure that they would make the opposition earn a win over their dead bodies. As it was, Australia remained alive, just, and Pakistan, having dominated for such large periods in the match, had nothing to show for it.But there were records made and records broken along the way. This was the second-highest fourth-innings score by a visiting team in Asia in history. Khawaja, who scored 141, surpassed the record for the highest-ever fourth-innings score by an individual batsman, going past Younis Khan’s 131 in 2010. Australia played one ball short of 140 overs, longer than they’ve ever batted in the fourth innings of a Test. All that work to ensure the series remained 0-0. How’s that for fighting spirit? It really wasn’t meant to be so difficult for Pakistan, who needed just seven wickets today to complete what looked like a routine win. But Khawaja and Travis Head carried on from where they had left off yesterday, batting 49 overs together and keeping Pakistan wicketless all morning to begin raising hopes, however faint, that a draw was possible.Draws between these two sides don’t come too often; the last one was 20 years and 20 Test matches ago. Pakistan looked like they were on their way again after Mohammad Hafeez – who in hindsight was perhaps a little underused – trapped Head in front two overs after lunch.Marnus Labuschagne never appeared set against the spinners, as Yasir began to look more potent than did at any point all match. He finally got his first wicket as the debutant went back to a delivery that went straight on, and was trapped plumb in front of middle.Even Tim Paine, who in the end was the man holding back a Pakistan surge, seemed particularly vulnerable for the first half hour in the middle, never quite sure of his footwork, or of which ball to leave. But some of Khawaja’s confidence rubbed off on his captain. As Paine began to get set, Pakistan found themselves having to break down the third significant partnership of the innings, with time running out. There was little drama for the first 90 minutes or so after tea, but Yasir finally broke through Khawaja’s vigil with a googly that the left-hander, for once, failed to sweep effectively. That brought Mitchell Starc to the crease, and gave Pakistan fresh hope. Within 13 balls, Pakistan had Australia eight down, and with Australia still needing to bat almost 13 overs, Pakistan were on course yet again.Crucially, though, Paine still hung around. In Lyon, he found a man able to shut out pressure, and simply focused on the task at hand. So comfortably did Lyon hold his end up that Paine never really looked to farm the strike. For a captain just two matches into the job, it is an ideal way to set the tempo for his tenure, as he embodied the virtues he wants his side to embrace, and played the game (in its true rather than vapid sense) hard but fair. The team spirit of Australia had been visible all game, even on the first two days when Pakistan’s batsmen were grinding them into the dust. The shoulders never dropped, the fast bowlers kept their pace up, and the spinners’ lines never wavered. Australia were fully focused on the task at hand, right until Paine blocked Yasir Shah’s final delivery, forcing Sarfraz to pull out the stumps and offer him a handshake. If Paine’s request to start the match with handshakes had seemed a little contrived to Sarfraz, the Pakistan captain reciprocating the gesture at the end would have been out of nothing but respect.

Kevin De Bruyne, Christian Pulisic & 10 stars who could follow Lionel Messi's footsteps stateside to MLS

No longer just a 'retirement league', plenty of leading stars are considering moving to the U.S. at the peak of their powers

Lionel Messi's 2023 transfer to Inter Miami has changed the landscape of MLS forever; no longer viewed as a 'retirement league', clubs in the U.S. are now challenging for the signatures of some of the biggest names on the planet while they are still at the peak of their powers.

Saudi Arabia will provide stiff competition as the go-to, desirable destination outside of European football, but the effect of capturing the greatest player in the modern era – and arguably of all time – is already clear to see.

But who are the stars who could be next to follow Messi to MLS while still at the very top of the game? GOAL runs through the possibilities…

(C)GettyImagesAntoine Griezmann

Let's start with the obvious. Griezmann is a veritable Yankophile and has put on record on multiple occasions his desire to live and work in the United States in the future. An avid American sports fan, the Frenchman even hosts a Spanish-language YouTube show about American football – NFL's Grizi Huddle.

Now 33, you'd think a move stateside wouldn't be too far away now, although Griezmann is in the form of his life in Spain with Atletico Madrid. Speaking in December, he said: "Beyond Europe, what I would like later is the MLS, I have always recognised that. But Atletico will be almost 100 percent my last club in Europe. It's where I want to be, where I see myself happiest and here I am at home."

AdvertisementGettyChristian Pulisic

Pulisic's homecoming would be a great thing for American soccer, although it's unclear exactly when the star of the U.S. men's national team will be willing to leave Europe behind to return to the States. Indeed, the 25-year-old clearly feels he has unfinished business across the Atlantic as he stars for AC Milan, suggesting last year that he will probably only head to MLS for his swansong.

Speaking on Tim Ream’s 'The American Dream' podcast about playing in MLS and a potential timeline, the attacker said: "Absolutely, I’d love to. Not in the, you know, near-near future for sure, but yeah, I absolutely would love to. Towards the end of my career, I’d love to."

Pulisic added in January: "Obviously, I’m not an old player. I hopefully have some great years in Europe ahead of me. I’m loving my time here, so of course MLS is not in my head at the moment."

Getty ImagesKevin De Bruyne

Could one of the greatest attacking midfielders of all time one day grace MLS? Although he hasn't spoken publicly about it, a move to the U.S. is supposedly something De Bruyne is thinking about.

According to , the Belgian has always considered finishing his career in MLS, and he would potentially prefer that over a touted move to Saudi Arabia for himself and his family, even if the money is worse.

De Bruyne's future at Manchester City is uncertain, too, with his contract due to expire in 2025 and no talks over an extension, with the club reluctant to hand a multi-year deal to a player who will turn 33 in June. It is said City would sell if their £90 million ($114m) valuation is met, although that may be a little steep for MLS clubs.

(C)GettyImagesOlivier Giroud

Giroud feels almost nailed-on to become the next star of European football to make the switch to MLS – potentially joining long-time France team-mate Hugo Lloris at LAFC.

When asked about a potential move stateside in January, the striker said: "MLS? There are other countries too. There will be more opportunities at the end of the season and I’ll decide. As a father and as a footballer."

Since then, the Los Angeles club has made its move, engaging in negotiations with the Frenchman – who has supposedly chosen to live in either New York or LA – over a summer move. The 37-year-old is out of contract at AC Milan at the end of the season and would arrive as a free agent as talks progress. There is, however, still the possibility he could extend his stay at San Siro, as he enjoys another fine season in Italy.

Virgil van Dijk reveals how LA Lakers hero LeBron James and NFL legend Tom Brady inspire Liverpool defender to 'get the maximum' out of himself

Van Dijk taking inspiration from JamesFollows other top athletes such as Djokovic & FedererDefender determined to keep quadruple hopes aliveWHAT HAPPENED?

Van Dijk, who recently collaborated with James for the launch of his new fashion line ‘LFC x LeBron,’ received a motivating message from the basketball icon. In the message, James expressed his confidence in Van Dijk's ability to achieve "amazing things" for Liverpool and encouraged him to "strive for greatness" – which is also the name of James’ documentary.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Van Dijk embraced James' words, recognising the significance of pushing oneself to the maximum potential in every aspect of life and sports to reach the zenith of success. And there is little doubt that he will use the mantra for the best cause against fiercest rivals Manchester United in the FA Cup on Sunday.

WHAT VAN DIJK SAID

“That phrase (Strive for Greatness) he uses is perfect and it could be used for a lot of things,” said the Liverpool skipper.

“We have had messages passed between us. For me personally, I definitely try and follow that because I want to achieve the most I can in life and get the maximum out of myself, the team and the position we’re in. We’re in a good place to do that this season, again. Every season is always a challenge, but this season we’re in a special situation.

“I look at all the top athletes because I feel they all have a big role, either as a role model or for their team and community, and there are so many things you can learn. There’s LeBron, [Novak] Djokovic, Roger Federer, Tom Brady – I could name so many. I like to listen to these guys and learn how they dealt with being at the top and dealing with difficult moments, but also good moments.”

DID YOU KNOW?

In adopting aspects of James' lifestyle, Van Dijk has incorporated personalised recovery methods, including having his own physiotherapist and chef, to ensure optimal preparation for each game.

“Those two parts are very important,” he said. “I do my recovery stuff so I can be optimally prepared for the next challenge, especially when you’re having three games a week. It was already fine, but I want to be better and make the most out of it, and that hard work nobody sees is the key to success.”

Jose Mourinho now makes "dreadful" Tottenham outcast his top Roma target

Tottenham Hotspur could be set to cash in on an experienced player who is struggling for form in January, with a fresh report revealing that he’s emerged as a top target for an admirer overseas.

Who is leaving Spurs?

Over the summer, Harry Kane, Harry Winks, Davinson Sanchez and Lucas Moura all departed the club on a permanent basis, whilst Djed Spence, Tanguy Ndombele, Sergio Reguilon, Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga were sent out on loan for the remainder of the season.

The Lilywhites exits might not stop there with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg attracting interest from Juventus ahead of the new year, not to mention that Hugo Lloris, Fraser Forster, Ivan Perisic and Brandon Austin have also been name-checked as players who could be heading for the door (Spurs exit links).

Ange Postecoglou hasn’t yet handed an opportunity to Eric Dier following his arrival in the dugout, with the centre-back having played zero minutes in the Premier League so far this season (WhoScored – Dier statistics), which shows just how much he has fallen significantly out of favour in North London.

The England international will additionally be out of contract at the end of the current campaign (Tottenham contracts), so with the upcoming window set to be the final chance for chiefs to cash in should they not want to risk losing him for free, the 29-year-old is another squad member on the chopping block.

Eric Dier transfer update

According to Italian outlet Tuttosport (via Corriere Giallorosso and Sport Witness) who have shared a transfer update on Eric Dier, Spurs’ defender is a “favourite name” of Jose Mourinho at AS Roma.

The Serie A manager is plotting a reunion with his former stalwart and he is therefore at the top of the list of his options ready to pursue in January. The Tottenham star is “ready to leave” the capital due to his worrying lack of game time and it’s believed that he would “welcome” the move to Italy.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier.

What happened to Eric Dier?

Since joining from Sporting CP back in 2014, Dier has largely been a consistent performer over the years, but it’s obvious to see that his levels have recently dropped, especially last season as he failed to make any kind of positive impact for Spurs.

The Cheltenham-born talent ranked as the club’s 14th best-performing defensive player out of 29 squad members having averaged just 0.9 tackles per game in the top-flight (WhoScored – Tottenham statistics), and was regularly criticised by fans and media alike.

Standing at 6 foot 2, Postecoglou’s outcast is also currently pocketing £85k-per-week – which is the same as Pedro Porro and more than the likes of Brennan Johnson and Micky Van De Ven – so it’s certainly not fair that he is earning the same amount of some of the boss’ genuine first-team stars (Tottenham salaries).

Therefore, Dier, who has been labelled “dreadful” by journalist Josh Bunting, should be removed from the books as quickly as possible so that the board can use the extra cash to generate funds for new signings either at the start of next year or later in the summer.

£66m price tag set for Premier League star with Chelsea prepared to pay it

Chelsea have been told what it will take to sign a Premier League star for manager Enzo Maresca, and it is a price the London side are apparently willing to pay for his services.

Chelsea recruitment criticised amid bad run of form

Maresca has guided the Blues to just three wins from their last 10 games in all competitions, with Chelsea enduring a mid-season slump in form after what was a very bright start to life under Pep Guardiola’s ex-protege.

Maresca isn’t exactly helped by injuries to Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu – his only natural centre-forward options – who are now set for a lengthy spell on the treatment table.

“Nico will be out until the international break, probably available after that,” said Maresca on Jackson’s injury.

Guiu could be facing “months” out injured as well, meaning Chelsea have just Christopher Nkunku in that position as a makeshift choice for the foreseeable future.

Winger Noni Madueke was also forced off with a hamstring problem in their 3-0 defeat away to Brighton last Friday, with Maresca then confirming that the Dutchman would be out for a while.

Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi-Mikel is among the pundits to criticise their recruitment policy in light of their injuries and poor form, questoning why they didn’t bring in a world-class marksman last summer.

“You can talk about it, the recruitment process that I’ve been talking about the whole time – Paul Winstanley [Chelsea co-sporting director], I know the guy,” Mikel said on his Obi One podcast.

Jackson, Guiu, Maresca

“Smart guy, clever guy. I’ve spoken to him a few times. Sounds bright, very, very bright guy. Knows his job. But I just think that the recruitment process in the summer, it wasn’t good enough, which I talked about.

“And a lot of Chelsea fans said, no, no, you just want Victor Osimhen at the club because he’s your friend – no he’s not. We needed a striker. We needed another goalkeeper, another top goalkeeper.”

Brighton set £66m price tag for Mitoma with Chelsea stance shared

According to CaughtOffside, they plan to remedy their decisions not to bring in a quality new attacker or two over the last couple of transfer windows.

Brighton star Kaoru Mitoma is one of their apparent targets, with the Seagulls set to demand around £66 million to sell the Japan international, who’s seriously impressed in the last two campaigns, being called “special” and “Messi-like” after his stunning goal against the Blues last week.

Kaoru Mitoma

While Fabian Hurzeler’s side are not keen on losing their star attacker, it is reported that they’d reluctantly do a deal at that price, with Chelsea prepared to pay Brighton’s valuation for Mitoma.

The 27-year-old boasts seven goals and three assists across 28 appearances in all competitions this season, and his most recent strike actually came against Chelsea in their 3-0 battering of Maresca’s side.

Fulham Have "Looked At" Signing "Fantastic" Reguilon

Fulham have now "looked at" signing Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon, but another player remains Marco Silva's priority target, according to Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas.

Who are Fulham signing this summer?

Fulham have now reached an agreement to sign Leicester City full-back Timothy Castagne, in what could be a £15m deal, and the Belgian is set to join on a four-year contract, with the transfer set to be formally announced by the club on Tuesday.

However, The Evening Standard report the Cottagers ideally want to bring in two new full-backs, indicating they could also sign a left-back, and they have recently stepped up their interest in signing AS Monaco's Ismail Jakobs, according to a report from TEAMtalk.

Jakobs is said to be Marco Silva's top target in that area of the pitch, with discussions currently ongoing, and the manager is determined to win the race for his signature, but there are some alternative options in mind, including Reguilon,

In a recent update on X, Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas has claimed that Fulham are one of the Premier League clubs who have "looked at" signing the Tottenham left-back, but they may have to fend off interest from elsewhere, with Manchester United also interested.

In what could be a boost for both clubs, the Spaniard will be allowed to leave Spurs before the transfer deadline on September 1st, with Sky Sports reporting he is one of four defenders "expected to depart" the north London club.

The Cottagers' interest only appears to be tentative at this stage, and their priority is getting a deal for Castagne over the line, but given that Silva wants to bring in two new full-backs, the Tottenham defender could also be brought in before the deadline.

How good is Sergio Reguilon?

The "fantastic" 26-year-old had two full seasons as a first-team regular for Spurs, making a total of 67 appearances for the club, however he was unfancied by former manager Antonio Conte ahead of last season, being sent out on loan to La Liga side Atletico Madrid.

However, the £48k-per-week full-back was unable to make the impact he would have been hoping for in his home country, making 11 appearances in La Liga, and featuring for just 303 minutes in total, never managing to force his way into Diego Simeone's plans.

Given that he has received very little game time over the past year, and did not stand out during his time in the Tottenham starting XI, it may be unwise for Fulham to pursue a move for Reguilon, particularly considering they have some other good options in mind.

Silva's priority target, Jakobs, has received far more game time for Monaco, making 32 Ligue 1 appearances last season, and he poses a real threat on the front foot, ranking in the 89th percentile for assists per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers.

There is a reason why Tottenham have no qualms about parting ways with Reguilon, and Fulham should avoid making a move for him this summer.
