Lanning fifty anchors Australia Women in six-wicket win

Yet another batting collapse had limited West Indies to 106, before Lanning took charge of the chase

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Sep-2019Australia Women carried forward their dominant performance on the Caribbean tour from the ODIs to the T20I format, with a six-wicket win over West Indies Women in the first T20I in Bridgetown, Barbados.Australia’s chase of 107 was controlled well by captain Meg Lanning’s unbeaten run-a-ball 54, after the side had lost the openers in a span of three overs. Lanning found support from Ellyse Perry, who shared in a third-wicket stand of 57, even as the Australia captain made the most of a reprieve she received to bring up her 13th T20I fifty. Lanning took her overall T20I run tally to 2547 becoming the first Australian and the fourth batsman in women’s cricket to score more than 2500 runs in the format. The knock was also Lanning’s third consecutive fifty-plus score on the tourWest Indies’ efforts with the bat followed much the same template as the ODI series, with a batting collapse hampering their chances in the game. By the end of the Powerplay, they had lost half their side with 38 on the board, and it was left to captain Stafanie Taylor to shepherd them past 100 with the help of the lower order. Megan Schutt, who had taken a hat-trick in the final match of the ODI series, was once again effective, dismissing Britney Cooper and Reniece Boyce in the Powerplay before taking her third wicket in the death overs. Perry, Delissa Kimmince and Jess Jonassen took a wicket each, with Jonassen conceding only 11 runs in four overs. The match saw a delay in the opening over, after West Indies had opted to bat. According to , after Schutt had dismissed Cooper off the fourth ball of the first over, the on-field umpires signaled for assistance, as they felt the markers for the inner fielding circle were wrongly placed. The game was delayed until the inner boundary circle was measured and the placement of the markers was corrected to 25 yards.

PIF may hijack Premier League club’s move to sign midfielder for Newcastle

Newcastle United are looking to possibly hijack a move for a highly-rated player with a "super strength" in his game, with another Premier League club also keen on snapping him up.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies picked up an impressive 2-0 win away to Fulham in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday evening, but attention may also be on new signings before the end of the January transfer window.

There are certainly a lot of players being linked with moves to St James' Park, with Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher one individual who is seen as a target for Newcastle this month. He could be allowed to leave the Blues, with Eddie Howe potentially seeing him as a key addition.

Manchester United youngster Omari Forson has also been backed to join the Magpies, but bitter rivals Sunderland are believed to be providing competition for his signature. Tottenham stalwart Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has also emerged as something of a surprise option, so there are plenty of options being looked at currently.

It appears as though one exciting talent could be on Newcastle and PIF's radar, too, ahead of a possible switch in 2024.

Newcastle could hijack Adam Wharton move

According to Football Insider, Crystal Palace are wary of Newcastle hijacking a move for Adam Wharton in the summer, with the Blackburn Rovers midfielder a wanted man.

"Crystal Palace are desperate to sign Blackburn Rovers midfielder Adam Wharton this month as they fear Premier League clubs like Newcastle United could move for him in the summer, sources have told Football Insider. Football Insider revealed on Friday (26 January) that Palace are not giving up on a deal for Wharton, 19, and will return with another bid after seeing a £18.5million offer rejected.

"Roy Hodgson’s side are currently leading the race for the youngster’s signature and are the only Premier League side to have firmed up their interest. But a well-placed source has told Football Insider that Palace want to wrap up a deal “as soon as possible” to ward off strong interest from other clubs."

Wharton appears to be a massive talent who is already making waves at senior level, with the 19-year-old starting 22 Championship matches for Blackburn so far this season. He has chipped in with two goals and three assists in that time, but it is his all-round game in the middle of the park has shone.

He has been lauded by former coach Ryan Kidd, who has singled out something that makes him extra special as a player, saying:

"Adam's super strength is that he can land it on a sixpence to anyone with both feet; He's technically one of the best footballers I've ever worked with at Under-18s level, he really is."

This outlines what a talent Wharton is, whereas Blackburn manager Jon Dahl Tomasson has described him as a "Champions League level" player on the ball. So, if Newcastle could beat Palace to his signature, they may well be bringing in a future star at St James' Park, ensuring they continue to plan for the long term.

Man Utd make their move for "prolific" PL star, it’s bad news for Hojlund

Despite only drawing 2-2 with Spurs at the weekend, Manchester United will be able to take plenty of positives from the performance, particularly in attack.

It is well known that Erik ten Hag is on the lookout for reinforcements in January, with a number nine high on the list.

Serhou Guirassy and Joshua Zirkzee are reported targets, but it is a Premier League prospect that the Red Devils now have their eye on.

Man United’s striker search – January bid made

According to Football Transfers, Man United have launched a rather audacious loan bid to bring Evan Ferguson to the club from Brighton.

Unfortunately, the Seagulls declined the approach, with Chelsea also mirroring United’s strategy, with a permanent deal being the only way the Irish striker leaves the club.

Previous reports have indicated the south coast club may only be willing to sell if a remarkable £100m price tag is met.

As a result, all fingers point towards a move this summer due to the financial fair play guidelines that will restrict the Red Devils.

Ferguson vs Hojlund

Rasmus Hojlund made the big-money switch to Old Trafford in the summer, signing from Atalanta for a huge £72m. However, his start to life in Manchester hasn’t exactly gone according to plan for the 20-year-old, as he has only netted twice in 16 league appearances.

Having said that, the Danish star has scored in back-to-back games now, and his confidence seems to be much improved. His strike against Spurs oozed class, hammering the ball into the roof of the net.

On the other hand, Brighton’s 19-year-old has scored triple the number of goals Hojlund has, six, despite starting five games fewer. The number 28 boasts an average minutes per game of just 54, with Roberto De Zerbi managing the youngster's time on the field, but the Republic of Ireland international has now gone nine games without a goal.

The potential arrival of Ferguson would be bad news for Hojlund in particular, especially as he is currently enduring his best spell in a United shirt, and based on their profiles, they wouldn’t feature alongside each other in Ten Hag’s system. The table below shows why, using statistics from the 2023/24 Premier League campaign.

Based on the stats above, it is clear that the two strikers are more traditional centre forwards who rarely get involved in the build-up of play, as highlighted by their low touches and passes completed.

They also aren’t the type to create for their teammates, but that could be due to their age and lack of experience at the highest level thus far. That said, Ferguson does seem to retain the ball very well, unlike Hojlund, who is wasteful at times.

Ferguson is more of a clinical finisher than Hojlund, and he ranks rather highly for goals per shot. A striker overperforming his xG is also a sign that a player only needs half a chance to score, and the former Atalanta star has unfortunately underperformed in that regard this season. That differs a great deal from the Brighton attacker who has been labelled “prolific” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig.

Despite Ferguson clearly being an exciting prospect and a potential upgrade on the Dane, signing a player who offers a very similar style of play to Hojlund wouldn’t make much sense in United’s current situation. The team needs a more experienced attacker who the number 11 can learn from on and off the field, not a loan deal for another young star.

Tottenham eyeing January move for Kalvin Phillips as loan fee shared

After securing deals to sign Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin, Tottenham Hotspur's transfer business may not be done this month, with reports suggesting they could yet move to sign a Champions League-winning midfielder for Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham transfer news

Looking to replace Heung-min Son whilst he's on international duty at the Asian Cup with South Korea, Spurs welcomed former Chelsea striker Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig. As he seeks Premier League redemption, the German could make his debut against Manchester United. Speaking on Werner's arrival, Postecoglou said:

"I had a good chat to [Technical Director] Johan Lange about it and thought Timo would be a really good fit for us stylistically. He certainly has the kind of attributes we look for. A player in that space – he can play in all three positions so that’s some real depth and quality for us in the front third."

The Lilywhites then followed up Werner's arrival by signing Genoa defender Radu Dragusin for a reported £25m, beating Bayern Munich to his signature. Like Werner, the defender could make his debut at Old Trafford in what could be looked back on as an important game in the battle for a European place. A third arrival could really hand Postecoglou's squad a boost and they may yet get that after Kalvin Phillips' loan fee price tag was revealed.

According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Spurs will have to pay between £5m and £6m to sign Phillips on loan this month and the North London club could yet make their move ahead of the likes of Juventus, with the player on their list of targets.

Former Spurs scout Bryan King reported the news on Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, saying: "Personally, if they are looking for a central midfielder, and there has been a lot of talk, I’d be looking at Phillips at Man City. I mean £5million or £6million for a loan – I’d certainly be looking at that. He has the kind of energy that Ange [Postecoglou] likes.”

"Excellent" Phillips can revive career with Spurs move

It may well turn out to be a month centred around reviving careers at Spurs, with Werner looking to get back on track in North London and Phillips potentially hoping to do the same. The Manchester City midfielder has never really been handed a consistent opportunity at the Etihad and appears to need a move. This season, Phillips' game time hasn't increased even in the absence of Rodri at times, playing just 318 minutes in all competitions and starting just two games.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

At his best, Phillips could still perform to the levels that saw him earn the praise of England manager Gareth Southgate, who said:

“He’s been excellent. The way he has taken to international football, it hasn’t surprised us because what we’d seen with Leeds, even in the Championship, we felt could convert into our team. We felt he could play an important role with us.

“To play in the enormity of the matches he did in the summer and play as well as he did is massive credit to him. He’s a very, very good player and he’s been a really important part of this – we’re 16 games unbeaten [in regulation time] now and he’s been a huge part of that.”

Pat Cummins wins Allan Border Medal ahead of Nathan Lyon and Aaron Finch

Pat Cummins has been named the Allan Border medalist at the Australian Cricket Awards in Melbourne to confirm him as the standout performer in a tough and controversial year for the men’s game.In a period which included the ball-tampering scandal leading to Steven Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft being suspended it was between Cummins, Nathan Lyon and Aaron Finch for the main award. The voting period of January 9, 2018 to January 7, 2019 took in Australia’s tours of South Africa, England, Zimbabwe and UAE, the one-day series against England after the 2018-19 Ashes, the T20 tri-series which followed plus the recent home season up to the end of the final Test against India at the SCG along with the ODIs against South Africa and T20Is against India.Cummins took 44 wickets across all formats, seven behind Lyon who had earlier been named Test player of the year, with Finch the only other serious candidate with 1302 runs in the voting period in which Test matches are given a greater weighting. Cummins tallied 156 votes, Lyon 150 and Finch 146.Pat Cummins was named the Allan Border medalist•Getty Images

A look the through the Test batting statistics of the voting period (which doesn’t include the recent Tests against Sri Lanka when four centuries were scored or the suspended trio) highlights the difficulties Australia faced with the bat. Marcus Harris topped the averages with 258 runs at 36.85 and Usman Khawaja the run-scoring with 592 runs at 32.88.Though Cummins missed the two Tests against Pakistan he produced impressive performances in Johannesburg (the Test after ball tampering) and in Melbourne against India and only went wicketless once in a Test, at the SCG when India piled on the runs. His 4 for 24 in the Adelaide ODI against England last season will have earned him an extra points haul to keep him ahead of Lyon and Finch and in the final count that may have been the difference.Though yet to be elevated to the new-ball role, Cummins has become Australia’s most consistent pace bowler and has developed into a handy No. 8 which he showed by scoring half-centuries against South Africa and India.Beyond the wickets, and useful runs, the standout feature for Cummins has been his ability to stay fit throughout two full Australian seasons following an early part of his career that was hampered by regular injury.Marcus Stoinis with Cricket Australia’s Men’s ODI Player of the Year Award•Getty Images

Elsewhere, Marcus Stoinis was named ODI Player of the Year in a period where he was the only player to appear in all 13 matches. He made four half-centuries in 13 innings among his 376 runs and claimed 13 wickets to cement his position the ODI team. By the end of the international season last week he had also earned his first Test call-up and is tipped to be part of the Ashes squad later this year.Glenn Maxwell, fresh from his outstanding innings for Melbourne Stars on Sunday to secure a place in the BBL semi-finals, was named T20I Player of the Year after making 506 runs in 19 matches including an unbeaten century against England in Hobart. Barring a major reversal, Maxwell will be part of Australia’s squad for the World Cup in England but appears unlikely to appear in the Ashes.Someone whose numbers mean he probably should be under consideration for all squads but appears likely to find himself missing out is Matthew Wade. He claimed the Domestic Player of the Year title for his prolific form last season which carried into the 2018-19 of which the first part of the Sheffield Shield counts towards this year’s votes alongside the latter half of the 2017-18 campaign. Across all formats, Wade scored 1509 runs in the voting period with five centuries. The Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year award went to Will Pucovski, the Victoria batsman who was part of Australia’s Test squad against Sri Lanka recently. Having been selected with a view to making his debut as part of a revamp of the batting line-up he then saw his spot go to Kurtis Patterson at the last moment. He was later released from the squad to allow him to continue to manage his mental health issues which kept him out of action earlier this season.

The Etihad Stadium profile

Few leagues in world football can match the Premier League for the number of iconic stadiums it boasts in any given year. Whether it's Anfield, Old Trafford, Goodison Park, or St James' Park, there are legendary footballing monuments in all corners of the country.

However, some grounds perhaps don't get the attention they deserve from the wider footballing public, and one of those stadiums is the home of the current champions and treble-winners, Manchester City.

The Etihad might not get the plaudits it deserves due to its relative newness, but we are confident that as the men in Sky Blue keep winning, it soon will.

With that in mind, we here at Football FanCast have outlined everything you need to know about the Sky Blue's home, so you're prepared for your next away day.

The Etihad's history

The Etihad Stadium was originally built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games and has gone through several rounds of renovations and expansions in its 21-year history.

The ground was initially built with two tiers and a running track inside, but once City moved in for the 2003-04 season, the running track was removed, the pitch was lowered, and an extra tier was added to increase capacity.

The most recent significant addition to the stadium was made in 2015 when a third tier was added to the South Stand, which increased capacity by 7,750. The club have also invested a considerable amount in the surrounding area, called the Etihad Campus.

While it has never hosted a domestic final, the Etihad was chosen to host the 2008 UEFA Cup final between Rangers and Zenit St Petersburg, with the latter winning 2-0.

With the club's current trajectory, it'll be interesting to see what they do with the stadium in the coming decades.

The Etihad's capacity

The Etihad might house the best team in Europe, but it only comes in as the sixth-biggest ground in the Premier League. However, that is soon to change.

It was announced in July of this year that the club's bold expansion plans had been approved by the council, and the initial construction effort would begin by the end of this year.

The plans will see the stadium's capacity increased by 7,900 seats in the North Stand, which would see it overtake the Emirates and Anfield in terms of overall capacity.

How do you get to the Etihad by train?

If you are travelling from outside of Manchester, it is best to get the train into Manchester Piccadilly Station first and then, from there, get the tram to the Etihad campus. The stadium is served by one stop on the Aston-Eccles line.

Etihad Campus (Ashton-Eccles Line): This tram stop brings you right to the stadium, and it should take just eight minutes to walk right up to the entrance at an average walking speed.

There are also several bus stops incredibly close to the stadium that you can take on match days. The two closest stops are Ashton New Road (Stop B), which is a six-minute walk from the stadium and Alan Turing Way (Stop C), which is a seven-minute walk from the stadium.

How do you get to the Etihad by car?

As with most Premier League teams, driving to the stadium on match days is not advised, as it will add a significant amount of time to your journey, and it will be incredibly difficult to find affordable parking.

However, if you must drive, you can either try to book a parking space on site ahead of time, although this is very competitive, or you can park at Booth Street West Car Park, a 30-minute walk from the stadium.

Away day tickets at the Etihad

For Premier League games, Manchester City accommodates up to 3,000 away fans in three tiers on one side of the south stand, whereas for cup games, they can accommodate up to 8,010 fans.

The stadium makes for a great away day thanks to its modern amenities, good sightlines, and the genuinely good atmosphere that has been present at the ground for the last few years.

The surrounding Etihad Campus is also an impressive sight, although it may leave away fans feeling a bit envious.
