No progress on India-Pakistan bilateral ties

The deadlock on bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan continues after the meeting between the two boards in Dubai on Monday

ESPNcricinfo staff29-May-2017The deadlock on bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan continues after the meeting between the two boards in Dubai on Monday. Even as the government of India reiterated earlier in the day that there cannot be any bilateral cricket given the current strained relations between the countries, the PCB remained hopeful of continued deliberations. The two boards could meet – again, informally – in England during the Champions Trophy. ESPNcricinfo understands that if a resolution is not found in these meetings, under the ICC dispute resolution procedures, there will have to be a formal meeting in the presence of the ICC CEO.On Monday, the BCCI is known to have conveyed its earlier position: that it cannot play bilateral cricket with Pakistan without the clearance of the government, and that such a clearance was not forthcoming. The meeting was held after the PCB had sent a notice of dispute to the BCCI, claiming losses for the BCCI’s refusal to tour in 2015. After receiving the notice, the BCCI sought the government’s permission again, which it conveyed to the PCB. The PCB’s response then invoked a provision in the MoU for dialogue should a series not go ahead. The said MoU to play six bilateral series from 2015 to 2023 was signed between the two boards in 2014. Although the BCCI indicated this MoU was “just a letter” and not a formal “contract”, it has responded to both the times the PCB has invoked dispute resolution. The next meeting between the two boards could take place in Birmingham, where India play Pakistan in the Champions Trophy. They could also have more interaction during the next round of ICC meetings.India continue to play Pakistan in multi-team events, as they did in Kolkata in the World T20 last year. India were supposed to play away against Pakistan in 2015, and are scheduled to host them in 2017.In 2015, the BCCI had offered PCB a series at home, which the PCB declined. India in turn refused to play Pakistan’s home series at a neutral venue without specifying any reasons. “We are not asking any permission from the government,” the then BCCI president Shashank Manohar had told ESPNcricinfo. “We are not playing in UAE. That is certain. There are reasons. But I don’t want another debate on that. So I will not tell you the reasons.”

Romano "Expects" Two Big Players to Leave Leeds

Fabrizio Romano expects both Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson to leave Leeds United this summer as the club prepares for life in the Championship.

Are Adams and Aaronson leaving?

Following a return to the Championship, a delayed takeover and a month-long wait for a new manager, there is not much to smile about at Elland Road at the moment.

The club's three-year Premier League journey ended in bitter disappointment last campaign, and with a chaotic beginning to their Championship return, Leeds fans will be hoping they don't have to wait another 16 years to make it back into England's top-flight.

To pile on the misery for Leeds supporters, two of the clubs biggest players are now expected to leave, with Adams and Aaronson both heading for the exit door in Yorkshire.

That is according to journalist Romano, who is expecting both United States internationals to move onto bigger and better things in the summer transfer market.

Speaking on his Here We Go podcast, he said: "I would say for Tyler Adams and Aaronson I expect both of them to be on the move this summer.

"For Tyler Adams there is a lot of interest in the Premier League. It's true that two, three clubs in the Premier League are tracking this possibility, so I think it's going to be busy around Adams in the next weeks, and same for Aaronson.

"So, there is really a lot of interest and I see both of them leaving Leeds this summer."

Having only arrived last summer for approximately £25m from RB Salzburg, Aaronson didn't quite make the impression he would have liked in the Premier League. The 22-year-old only managed one goal in 36 Premier League appearances and that came against Chelsea in just the third week of the season.

Romano has suggested that Aaronson is on his way to Union Berlin in the Bundesliga on loan, with Leeds being forced to allow the move due to a relegation clause in the attacking-midfielder's contract.

Meanwhile, Adams has reportedly told Leeds of his desire to leave Elland Road, with the holding midfielder's impressive performances last season making him an attractive prospect to a lot of clubs. Aston Villa are one of the clubs leading the way for his signature.

The 24-year-old made 24 Premier League appearances for the Whites last term, but missed 12 games at the end of the season due to a hamstring injury. His defensive solidity was sorely missed, with Leeds conceding four or more goals in five separate games during his absence.

Who else could leave Leeds?

There are understandably a plethora of names linked with an exit from Elland Road, with an exodus of talent normally expected post-relegation.

Roma are reportedly interested in taking two Leeds players to Italy, with Diego Llorente and Rasmus Kristensen both angling for a Serie A moves.

Explosive forward Wilfried Gnonto is also expected to depart, with Everton and Aston Villa holding an interest in the Italian speedster. He would reportedly be available for around the £21m mark.

Another exciting forward in the form of Crysencio Summerville has told Leeds that he wishes to leave the club, with Everton again said to be eyeing up the young Dutch winger.

One transfer that has been confirmed is Tyler Roberts' move to Birmingham City, with the Blues set to pay much less than the reported £750,000 fee that had been rumoured according to BirminghamLive.

Liverpool could land VVD 2.0 in £34.3m Serie A Goliath

Liverpool have been active in the summer transfer window following a disappointing campaign last season and a midfield rebuild has been the top priority for Jurgen Klopp and new sporting director Jorg Schmadtke.

The Reds have returned to pre-season training with two new additions in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai joining the Merseyside outfit and there is no doubt that Klopp will be looking forward to working the pair into his tactical philosophy to improve the quality in the centre of the pitch next season.

Despite the squad getting back to work ahead of next season, the club remain active in the market with Romeo Lavia the latest midfielder to be linked with a move to Anfield this summer, however, they could also be in the market to snap up the services of a quality centre-back too.

Liverpool have been linked with numerous names in that role over the last few weeks and months with Joska Gvardiol, Micky van de Ven and Levi Colwill all mooted as potential prospects for the club.

The latest defender to be touted for a move to Anfield is Torino titan Perr Schuurs, a talented centre-back who is not only a fantastic youth prospect but a compatriot and competitor of Virgil van Dijk in the Netherlands national team.

According to Tuttosport (via Sport Witness), Liverpool are expected to make another approach for Schuurs this summer after having an initial €30m (£26m) bid rejected in the past.

Who is Perr Schuurs?

The 23-year-old – hailed "outstanding" by journalist Josh Bunting – made his start in Fortuna Sittard's academy before moving on to Ajax's highly-rated youth set-up back in 2018 and quickly becoming a first-team regular at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Schuurs played his part in winning three Eredivisie titles and two Dutch cups under Erik ten Hag and last summer made a permanent move to the Serie A via Torino, where he has continued to flourish and attract attention which has led to his inclusion in the Netherlands squad – although he is yet to make an appearance for the senior side.

Liverpool have had incredible success when leaning on Dutch talent with Dirk Kuyt, Georginio Wijnaldum and Van Dijk playing huge roles in the club's dominance over the years, whilst Cody Gakpo has been the latest Netherlands native to burst onto the scene at Anfield joining the club back in January this year.

Now Klopp could repeat his Van Dijk masterclass with the signing of Schuurs – who has a reported price tag of €40m (£34.3m) – this summer as the 6 foot 3 Goliath could be the rightful heir to the Liverpool superstar's important role in the team.

perr-schuurs-ajax-premier-league-liverpool-transfers

When comparing the Serie A star to his Liverpool positional peer over last season, the Dutch duo have come close in a number of key attributes including pass completion rate (88.1% v 90.5%), interceptions (28 v 31), blocks (29 v 24) and ball recoveries (181 v 168) over 32 league appearances, as per FBref.

Whilst Schuurs also outperformed Van Dijk in tackles won per 90 (1.97 v 0.78), interceptions completed per 90 (1.08 v 0.89), successful take-ons per 90 (0.39 v 0.05) and blocks per 90 (1.08 v 0.71) over the last 12 months, proving that he could be not only a valuable asset for the future but also a worthy successor to the Netherlands captain.

With that being said, if Liverpool can secure a deal for Schuurs it would be a great piece of business for the club and could provide Klopp with his next prodigy to develop into a star player.

Arsenal could sign "extraordinary" ace in £52m swoop

Arsenal are expected to have a busy summer, as the memorable 2022/23 campaign comes to a close with just 90 minutes left to play.

The Gunners have enjoyed an emphatic season, seeing them bring Champions League football back to the Emirates, and record their first top-two finish since 2016.

While returning to the pinnacle of European football was to be celebrated, the narrative of the campaign was Mikel Arteta’s side leading the way and agonisingly missing out on winning their first Premier League title since 2004.

As the summer transfer window approaches, Arsenal will look to strengthen in areas that denied them of the perfect season, in the bid to hit similar heights next term.

What’s the latest on Ansu Fati to Arsenal?

As reported by The Independent – relayed by football.london – Barcelona ace Ansu Fati could be on the move to north London this summer.

The report speculates that Arsenal have been “offered” the chance to sign the 20-year-old, who has been short of game time at Camp Nou.

Valued at €60m (£52m) by the CIES Football Observatory, it’s rumoured that the club are “yet to confirm” whether their interest in the young forward is reciprocated, as per the report.

What could Ansu Fati bring to Arsenal?

Hailed as potentially being Barcelona’s “heir to Lionel Messi”, the Bissau-born Spanish international made his debut at just 16 after rising through the ranks at La Masia.

Likened to Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli by FBref, the two wide players are statistically similar in their approach to the game from the flanks, potentially giving Arteta significant strength in depth and a headache regarding team selection.

Like the Brazilian, the Barcelona ace is extremely direct in his eye to burst in the final third, as shown by his numbers over the past year, despite not being rewarded with sufficient game time.

Ansu Fati

As per FBref, Fati ranks in the top 1% of wingers in Europe’s top five leagues over the past year in terms of attempts on goal, averaging a monstrous 4.01 shots per 90 – with Martinelli scoring 2.52 in the same area.

Arsenal’s No 11 is extremely tactile in the penalty area, as seen through the Gunners’ style of play, which could suit the style of the "extraordinary" Spaniard, as hailed by Xavi, who hits similar numbers to the Brazilian where he is most impressive.

The 21-year-old averages 6.99 touches per 90 in the attacking penalty area, with the £199k-per-week La Liga star scoring higher with 7.73 per 90, showing the calibre of talent Arteta could get his hands on this summer.

If Fati was to make the switch to north London, he could rival Arsenal’s joint-highest goalscorer, who despite looking untouchable in Arteta’s setup, could revel in competition with a player as influential as the 20-year-old.

Martinelli’s rise to becoming a firm starter at the club has come through his ability to rise to the competition, with even this season being left out for Leandro Trossard, for example at Villa Park, in which he responded with a goal when coming off the bench.

The Gunners losing out on the title was partly attributable to their lack of squad depth, which was, in this case, most notably in defence, but when you review the depth of talent in Manchester City’s locker, quality in numbers is required all over the field.

Only time will tell if Arsenal make the move to lure the Spaniard away from his home in Catalonia, though what is certain is the positive influence he would have on Arteta’s budding squad.

Everton Interested In Signing "Absolutely Fantastic" £20k-p/w Striker

Everton are now in a fight to sign Villarreal striker Boulaye Dia, who is currently on loan at Salernitana, according to recent reports from Italy.

Which strikers could Everton sign this summer?

Everton are looking at a number of strikers currently playing in the Serie A, with it recently being reported they are pushing hard to sign Inter Milan's Joaquin Correa, having already made contact with the Italian club about a potential deal.

Duvan Zapata is also a target for the Toffees, with it being reported back in March that they are ready to make an offer of €15m (£13m) for the Colombian, who is out of favour at Atalanta due to Rasmus Hojlund's recent form.

Udinese's Beto has been named as a player of interest to Sean Dyche, with a new striker seemingly high on the list of priorities for the manager, and the 25-year-old is said to be valued at around €25m (£22m).

According to a report from La Citta di Salerno (via Sport Witness), Everton are in the picture to sign Salernitana star Dia, who is on loan at the Italian club from Villarreal, and can be signed permanently for €12m (£10.6m) in the summer.

Leeds United and AC Milan are also interested in the forward, who the Toffees have been following for months, having been impressed by his goal-scoring record, now just one goal away from matching Salernitana's record for most goals in a Serie A season.

However, it will seemingly be a very difficult transfer to complete, as the player himself wants to continue with the Italian side, in order to try and break more records.

Should Everton sign Boulaye Dia?

While it appears likely the £20k-per-week forward will remain in the Serie A, there is still a possibility he is attracted by a move to the Premier League, and he could be exactly what the Toffees need to bolster their attack.

Hailed as "absolutely fantastic" by former West Ham United striker Marlon Harewood, the Senegal international has weighed in with 17 goal contributions in 28 Serie A appearances this season, a very impressive record considering he plays for a midtable side.

Salernitana striker Boulaye Dia.

It is clear that Everton will need a new striker this summer, given that Neal Maupay has very poor all season, scoring just once in 23 Premier League appearances, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin has struggled with injury issues.

Dia has also displayed by his creative side by ranking in the 94th percentile for assists per 90 in the past year, when compared to other forwards, and given his age, he is likely to be entering his prime, making him the perfect signing for Dyche.
