Nightwatchman Kerrigan hits new heights

Lancashire loanee Simon Kerrigan struck a career-best 62 and Rob Newton pronounced himself king of the half-centuries as Northants achieved a hard-won victory in Cardiff

Northants remain in contention for promotion to Division One after defeating Glamorgan in Cardiff. With a game in hand over leaders Worcestershire, next week’s important game against Nottinghamshire, now second, could determine who goes up next season. Northants play bottom club Leicestershire in the final game, and if they replicate this fine all-round performance in their last two games, they have a chance of promotion. They also defeated the weather, after heavy rain stopped play with only nine runs needed for victory. There was delay of 82 minutes, before the rain relented and victory was achieved with 34.4 overs to spare.Simon Kerrigan, who is on loan from Lancashire, ostensibly for his left arm spin, shone as a batsman as Northants reached their target with seven wickets in hand. After coming in as nightwatchman after Ben Duckett was dismissed the previous evening, Kerrigan never looked in any trouble against a Glamorgan attack, who were guilty of bowling too many poor deliveries in the morning session, giving the batsmen opportunities to score freely and set up the run chase.Resuming on 42 for 1, the second wicket pair were soon scoring at four runs an over, and apart from against Michael Hogan, they scored freely and quickly shared a 50-run partnership. Newton reached fifty from 99 balls with nine fours – his second half century of the game- but was out shortly afterwards when he was bowled by Craig Meschede. This was Newton’s tenth score over fifty in the championship this season, the most by any player in the two divisions.Kerrigan’s commendable contribution ended when he was bowled, shouldering arms against Hogan, for 62, equalling his previous career-best score made for Lancashire against Hampshire at Southport in 2013.Following Kerrigan’s dismissal, Richard Levi joined Alex Wakeley, the captain having recovered from his injured finger, and the first-innings centurion made his intentions clear by hitting two sixes as Northants accelerated towards their target. The rain then descended and it was a frustrating wait for the visitors, but when play restarted they needed only a further nine balls to reach their target, and take a welcome 22 points.

Chelsea Make "Official Bid" For "Monster" Keeper

Chelsea have "sent an official bid" to Brighton & Hove Albion for their number two goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez, and consider him a "cheaper and smart option" in the market, claims transfers expert Fabrizio Romano.

Is Robert Sanchez joining Chelsea this summer?

It looks like it could be the end of the road for Kepa Arrizabalaga at Stamford Bridge this summer, or at the very least, he'll have to battle it out with his fellow countryman for the number one spot next season.

According to The Athletic, Brighton's Sanchez was left at home during pre-season to sort out a move away from the Amex and has since been the subject of an offer from Mauricio Pochettino's side this week.

With the departure of Edouard Mendy to Saudi Arabia earlier in the window and the fact that Kepa has never truly lived up to his astonishing price tag, the Pensioners have needed a new man between the sticks for some time now.

Read the latest Chelsea transfer news HERE…

While the price for the twice-capped Spaniard hasn't been revealed, it is unlikely to be too dear as he has been relegated to a bench role since March of this year, and with just two years remaining on his £25,000-a-week deal, the club are eager to sell him, per transfers expert Fabrizio Romano.

Robert Sanchez

He explained the situation on his YouTube channel, saying:

"Chelsea have sent an official bid today [Monday] to Brighton for Robert Sanchez, the goalkeeper. Yes, Chelsea always had his name in the list; even when Onana was mentioned internally as a possibility, Robert Sanchez has always been considered as a cheaper and smart option, and Chelsea decided to bid for Robert Sanchez.

"I will let you know about the amount, but at the moment, Chelsea prefers to keep things quiet because of their relationship with Brighton. But this deal, first of all, is very concrete because the player wants the move.

"So Brighton want Sanchez to leave and Sanchez wants to go to Chelsea, he's been very clear. So, negotiations are ongoing, but very positive feelings."

How good is Robert Sanchez?

While it has certainly been a tough year for the Spaniard, with his game time being almost half of what it was the season beforehand, last year still wasn't quite as bad as some people may believe.

Across his 23 Premier League games last season, the 25-year-old made 2.1 saves per game, maintained a passing accuracy of 74.7% and averaged a match rating of 6.42, per WhoScored.

Unfortunately, he also conceded 1.3 goals a game, and his season rating was his lowest since making his debut for the Seagulls in the 2020/21 season.

With Brighton's tactical approach being so heavily reliant on a goalkeeper that is exceptional with the ball at his feet, it's easy to see why Steele was brought in to replace the Spanish international, as he averaged a passing accuracy of 88% in the second half of the season.

Robert Sanchez

That said, his fortunes might have turned somewhat with the departure of Graham Potter, as the Englishman was a huge fan, heaping praise on him following a standout performance against Burnley:

"He is a monster in terms of his physicality. He's not just big, but he is powerful, he is fast.

"In terms of attributes as a goalkeeper, he has got everything to be a top goalkeeper."

However, even with that ringing endorsement from the former Chelsea coach, should the Champions League-chasing Blues be opting for Brighton's number two keeper, especially when it looks like Arsenal could be about to sign David Raya?

Is it a stroke of genius from the west Londoners or an unnecessary gamble? We'll just have to wait and see on this one.

Chelsea Keen On Signing ‘Special’ £35m Nkunku Partner

Chelsea are in the running to sign Michael Olise this summer.

Who wants to sign Michael Olise?

According to Football Insider, Chelsea have a concrete interest in bringing the Crystal Palace starlet to Stamford Bridge.

This outlet also revealed that Olise has a release clause of £35m and Manchester City are also keen on a deal. The reigning European Champions view the winger as a direct replacement for Riyad Mahrez, who is on the verge of a move to Saudi Arabia.

The Eagles would be powerless if both clubs activate this clause, and it would come down to the 21-year-old’s personal decision as to where his future lies.

Olise is currently facing up to three months out after tearing his hamstring during the U21 European Championship for France against Norway. Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Chelsea and Man City are waiting for clarity on his condition before they plot their moves.

How good is Michael Olise?

Last season, the former Reading prodigy rose to international prominence thanks to his dazzling creativity and output.

In 31 Premier League starts, Olise registered 11 assists, which was the joint-fourth-highest tally in the entire division. This also meant he was the first Palace player to ever claim double-digit assists in a top-flight campaign.

Crystal Palace midfielder Michael Olise.

This wonderful term also included a record-breaking performance in the South Londoner’s 5-1 thrashing of Leeds United back in April, where he became the youngster-ever player to record three assists from open play in the Premier League. During that match, he also notched five successful dribbles, four accurate crosses, six key passes, and won 12 duels.

Furthermore, last season in the Palace squad, the forward averaged the most key passes per game in the league (1.9) and created the most chances in all competitions (69) at a rate of 1.73 per 90.

This incredible form led to glowing praise from Patrick Vieira, who said: “He can score goals, create chances and he is a special talent. He will improve and get better as a player. His work ethic every day has been terrific.”

A player with this limitless potential and sparkling innovation can provide an invaluable source of relief for the incoming Christopher Nkunku.

Olise's fellow Frenchman has already been signed from RB Leipzig for £52m. The attacker has forged a ridiculously impressive reputation in Germany – he was named the Bundesliga Player of the Season and German PFA Player of the Season for 2021-22 after 35 goal contributions in the league.

Then in the most recent campaign, despite missing nine games through injury, he was the Bundesliga’s top scorer with 16 goals and netted in Leipzig’s German DFB Cup final victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Christopher Nkunku new Chelsea star

Upon his arrival to England, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, Chelsea's co-sporting directors, said: "Christopher has proved himself one of the standout attacking players in European football over the past two seasons and will add quality, creativity, and versatility to our squad."

The prospect of combining Olise’s creativity with Nkunku’s potency is a frightening prospect. If the Palace livewire had been awarded more productive forwards in South London, he could have even surpassed the imperious Kevin De Bruyne at the top of the assists chart.

Now with Nkunku possibly partnering him in the frontline, the sky is the limit for Olise.

Arsenal Fans Believe Picture Proves Chance Of Mbappe Deal

During the transfer window, a picture really can paint a thousand words. At least, in the minds of supporters…When a current player is pictured with another star elsewhere, minds begin racing, future strike partnerships begin to formed, and endless trophies are imagined. All of us enter dreamland. The brutal reality is far from dream-like, though, as a picture is usually just that. A picture between two friends.Arsenal fans have been the latest fans to get sucked into the hype of a photo, with young striker Folarin Balogun pictured with Paris Saint-Germain mega star Kylian Mbappe, leaving a number of fans dreaming over a potential link-up.Balogun enjoyed an excellent season last time out whilst on loan at Stade Reims, scoring 22 goals in 29 appearances. And, now, he returns to Arsenal hoping to finally get his chance in the first team.Given the Gunners’ place in the Champions League next season, too, they will need all the help and squad depth that they can get. Having Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah and the former Reims loanee as options would represent three strikers more than capable of hitting double figures in goals.Arsenal fans have been busy getting excited at the thought of another striker at the Emirates, however.

What is the latest on Kylian Mbappe?

Whenever the transfer window opens, an Mbappe transfer saga seemingly begins. This summer, the Frenchman has been linked with a move away from PSG once again after he revealed that he does not plan on extending his current contract and will, therefore, become a free agent next summer.

This means that if the Ligue 1 champions want to make some money from their star man, they will need to make a transfer happen either this summer or in January.

According to ESPN, Real Madrid, though cautious over a move, are hopeful that a deal could finally be done this summer. And The New York Times suggest PSG may be forced into selling their star this summer as to not lose him for free – so he’s essentially transfer listed and on the market, though would demand a fee of over £157m.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have been urged to drop their summer plans and go all out for Mbappe by Forbes’ Graham Ruthven. The forward could have ended up in North London as a youngster, as revealed by Arsene Wenger, who wanted him at Arsenal many years ago.

Whilst it would be a full circle moment for the Gunners to finally land Mbappe, however, it is Madrid in pole position.

Arsenal fans react to Balogun with Mbappe

The image was initially posted on the USMNT star’s official Instagram before it was quickly circulated on social media.

Taking to Twitter to react to Balogun’s picture with Mbappe, Arsenal fans reacted with hopeful glee, which you can see below:

Dhoni asked me to open, changed my career – Rohit

India batsman Rohit Sharma has said MS Dhoni improved his ODI career by asking him to open the batting in the format before the 2013 Champions Trophy in England. In his first match after the move, Rohit struck 83 off 93 balls against England in a successful chase of 258.”I believe the decision to open in ODIs changed my career and it was a decision taken by MS Dhoni. I became a better batsman after that. In fact it helped me understand my game better, react better according to situations,” Rohit told .”He (Dhoni) just came up to me and said ‘I want you to open the innings as I am confident that you will do well. Since you can play both cut and pull shot well, you have the qualities to succeed as an opener’,” Rohit said. “He told me that I shouldn’t be scared of failures or get upset by criticism. He was looking at the bigger picture as the Champions Trophy was scheduled in England that year.”With no disrespect to other great Indian captains, I was blessed to play under MS all these years. His calmness in pressure situations helped us. He always led from the front. There won’t be one like him.”In India’s successful campaign in the Champions Trophy, Rohit scored 177 runs and two fifties in five matches at an average of 35.40, including 65 off 81 balls in the tournament opener against South Africa. Later that year, he also scored 209 while opening against Australia in Bangalore and set a world record a year later against Sri Lanka by amassing 264 runs on his own.”The Champions Trophy in England made me confident that I can open and ready to face challenges of playing the white ball in English conditions in the morning,” Rohit said. “I got 65 against South Africa, who had Morne Morkel, Ryan McLaren, Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Rory Kleinveldt. Morne and McLaren were hitting a three-quarter length and Tsotsobe was swinging it. The skipper was confident that I could handle the situation and I did.”Rohit, currently recovering from a thigh surgery, a result of a muscle injury he suffered during the ODIs against New Zealand, said he required an additional “six to eight weeks” to regain full fitness.”You can’t do anything about it and I have been in situations like this before,” Rohit said. “What disappointed me was the fact that the injury happened just when I was in rhythm scoring three successive fifties against New Zealand in Test matches.”I have started running and from next week I will start with my batting drills. First the basic drills, followed by batting against bowling machine followed by proper net session.”

Newcastle Could Sign Firmino 2.0 In ‘]Beautiful’ £215k-p/w Gem

Newcastle United have been offered Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix, who has just concluded a short-term loan spell with Premier League strugglers Chelsea.

What's the latest on Joao Felix to Newcastle?

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle have been handed the opportunity to sign the mercurial Felix after new Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino opted against signing the 23-year-old this summer.

Felix joined the Blues in January in a £10m loan deal but failed to pull the club out of their seasonal rut, now returning to his Atletico boss Diego Simeone out of favour and in search of another departure from Wanda Metropolitano.

Paris Saint-Germain have also been handed the chance to sign the dynamic frontman and could take the lead in the race, with Felix's £215k-per-week wages likely to be a stumbling block in a deal for Eddie Howe's outfit.

Should Newcastle sign Joao Felix?

Toon technical director Dan Ashworth could have a hard time completing a deal for Felix this summer given his exorbitant salary, but the opportunity to complete a loan deal is no doubt tantalising after qualifying for the Champions League.

Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson, Newcastle's current strikeforce, are a prolific and menacing duo and have both excelled this season at providing a reliable offensive threat and navigating toward a monumental top-four finish, but Felix would offer a new dimension to the attack.

As per FBref, the former Benfica prodigy ranks among the top 8% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, and the top 5% for progressive passes, progressive carries and successful take-ons per 90.

This highlights how much effective work Felix plies for his team; not the most prolific of strikers, he has yet to hit double digits in a top-five European league divisional season, the 30-cap gem instead opens space and enhances the prospects of those around him.

Joao Felix headers the ball for Chelsea as they face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Hailed as a "beautiful player" by talent scout Jacek Kulig for his prowess on the ball, Felix could emulate the role of Liverpool's iconic forward Roberto Firmino.

The distinguished Brazilian has departed Anfield on a free transfer this summer after making 362 appearances, scoring 111 and supplying 79 assists – bathing in illustrious success, gleaning the Premier League and Champions League among other major honours.

Firmino's distinctive style slightly deeper than that of a traditional centre-forward, with greater emphasis on weaving the midfield and attack together and opening opportunities for inside forwards to wreak havoc – Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah step forward – could pay dividends if emulated effectively on Tyneside. Indeed, it is that very role that the aforementioned Felix appears to thrive in.

Howe and Ashworth must consider whether a move is viable and determine whether to swoop, but if utilised aptly, Felix could draft a new dimension to Newcastle's thriving squad and enrich the offensive fluidity.

Arsenal Make £17m Bid For "Intriguing" Gem

Arsenal have reportedly submitted a bid for Galatasaray right-back Sacha Boey as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his squad ahead of next season.

What’s the latest on Sacha Boey to Arsenal?

According to Turkish outlet Turkiye Gazetesi, Arsenal have submitted a bid in the region of €20m (£17m) for the defender, however, Galatasaray are demanding €25m (£21.5m) for one of their prized assets this summer.

According to the report, the Turkish side want to negotiate and get a deal done which matches their demands, with Arsenal ‘expected to accelerate’ in order to complete the move.

Brighton and Hove Albion are also keen on the 22-year-old, yet the lure of Champions League football next season at the Emirates will surely prove to be the main factor for Boey.

Could Sacha Boey be an upgrade on Takehiro Tomiyasu?

Ahead of Arsenal’s first foray in Europe’s premier club competition since 2016/17, Arteta will be keen to improve various areas of his squad, with the right-back area clearly one that needs to be bolstered.

Ben White was often shifted from his usual centre-back position to deputise on the right last season, whilst Takehiro Tomiyasu made 32 appearances, yet only 13 of those were starts – might Boey be an upgrade on the Japanese defender ahead of next term?

The Frenchman has underlined his importance to his team as they claimed their first league title since 2019 this season. He ranked 6th for overall rating across the whole squad (7.11), fourth for big chances created (seven), third for successful dribbles per game (1.1) and second for tackles per game (2.7), clearly playing a key role in Galatasaray’s title triumph.

Tomiyasu in comparison, ranked 18th in the Arsenal squad for overall rating (6.68), 15th for big chances created (one), 20th for successful dribbles per game (0.0) and sixth for tackles per game (1.3), clearly indicating that the 22-year-old would make for a much better option on the right side of Arteta’s defence next season.

sacha-boey-transfer-gossip-arsenal-cedric-arteta-edu

Journalist Zach Lowy once described Boey as an “intriguing prospect” in 2021 before he made the move to Turkey, and it's fair to suggest that he has indeed developed into a well-rounded right-back, who can both defend and attack effectively, judging by his returns in the Galatasaray squad this term.

It’s evident that Arteta needs some major strength across his defence in order to sustain another Premier League title challenge in 2023/24 and luring Boey to the club for an aforementioned fee of £21.5m could prove to be a wise investment over the coming years.

Release Clause May Help Liverpool Land £50k-p/w Target

Journalist David Ornstein has claimed that the "complex" release clause in the contract of Liverpool transfer target Alexis Mac Allister at least suggests that he probably be leaving this summer.

What's the latest on Alexis Mac Allister and Liverpool?

The Brighton star appears to be a wanted man for the time being with the Reds among a number of Premier League sides to be linked with the Argentine of late.

However, there have been conflicting reports in the media regarding just how likely the midfielder is to go and how far any possible exit talks have actually gone so far.

For instance, according to The Athletic's Andy Naylor, fans should "ignore" any noise for now, as there has been "no contact" with Liverpool, and Brighton "aren't expecting any".

Amid all that, in a fresh development, Ornstein has explained that the player does have an option in his contract that will allow him to leave this summer – although it isn't a conventional clause.

Speaking on the FIVE YouTube channel, he explained: Mac Allister, I revealed, has a clause in his contract, but it's not as simple as a typical release clause, which is just: pay a set fee and the player decides if he wants to leave or not and the club don't have control – Brighton do have a say in the matter.

"Now, a lot of people will be watching this and saying, so what are you actually saying? What is the clause? How does it work? What's the value?

“It's intricate, from what I hear. It's complex. And it's detailed and complicated. And I don't know the ins and outs. But what it does show us is that there is a method that can assist in the departure of Alexis Mac Allister this summer.

"And that increases the likelihood that he will be leaving rather than Brighton saying what they said with Moises Caicedo in January, he's not going anywhere.”

Who wants to sign Alexis Mac Allister?

As alluded to by Ornstein, when Arsenal tried to sign Moises Caicedo in the winter, Brighton held firm and simply rejected any advances from the Gunners.

However, it sounds as though there will be a fee for Mac Allister that, if reached by a bid, will be enough to force the Seagulls into selling.

Brighton & Hove Albion'sAlexisMacAllisterin action with Newcastle United's Elliot Anderson

However, the finer details of this clause are yet to emerge in any specific detail and so this particular potential transfer saga may yet rumble on deep into the summer with Liverpool not the only team to be chasing the £50k-p/w star.

Indeed, Manchester United and Chelsea appear to be among those who will no doubt also be trying to learn just how much is needed to trigger a deal.

One thing is for sure though, this clause certainly contradicts that claim from Naylor that Brighton aren't expecting any contact from Liverpool regarding a transfer.
