Martin must axe Southampton man who earns more than Sugawara & Brereton

Southampton supporters will be starting to get a little tetchy about their side’s chances of beating the drop, even with the Premier League season only five games in.

Russell Martin’s Saints are yet to pick up a win in the testing division, but it could’ve been oh-so different last weekend after promising Southampton youth product Tyler Dibling opened the scoring against another relegation-threatened outfit in Ipswich Town.

However, Sam Morsy for the away side would have other ideas late on and delivered a sucker punch right at the death to deny Martin’s men an elusive three points.

At least the South Coast side managed to pick up a draw in this contest, with a recent 3-0 defeat to Manchester United at St Mary’s still a sore scoreline to stomach, as Jack Stephens really struggled defensively against Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils.

Stephens' performances this season

Recognised as a well-thought-of servant at Southampton, with 185 games for the Saints now under his belt and the captain’s armband on his sleeve, Stephens still hasn’t been able to cope with the step-up in quality so far.

He was notably poor against Man United, with the experienced 30-year-old even sent off late on in the one-sided affair after this poorly-timed tackle stopped Alejandro Garnacho in his tracks.

Daily Mail journalist Nathan Salt would dish out a 3/10 match rating to Stephens after this early bath, with the lacklustre centre-back not helping his side whatsoever after his dismissal, as Garnacho then ended up shaking off the cynical tackle with a late strike to make it 3-0 on the day.

Struggling away at Brentford the game prior too, with only one duel won from five attempted as Thomas Frank’s Brentford put Stephens’ side to the sword 3-1, the dismissal against United has at least given Martin food for thought as to who could replace the Saints captain moving forward.

Tyler Harwood-Bellis came into the side in Stephens’ place against Ipswich and looked solid – with 50 accurate passes tallied up playing out from defence – as the 30-year-old now worries about his standing in the main Saints lineup moving forward.

Stephens' wage at Southampton

The defender’s excessive wage also doesn’t help his cause, with Stephens raking in more than both Yukinari Sugawara and Ben Brereton-Diaz in the current Saints camp – as per Capology – despite the duo both joining as bold signings just this summer.

Sugawara has also fitted in seamlessly at Southampton so far, with his strike against Brentford actually breaking his team’s goalscoring duck in the top division. That said, he still finds himself earning less per week compared next to Stephens’ pay packet.

According to Capology, Stephens earns £45k-per-week compared to the Japanese gem’s £40k-per-week wage, with Ben Brereton-Diaz earning even less than the new standout Saints defender himsef at £35k-per-week.

1. Aaron Ramsdale

£120k-per-week

2. Joe Aribo

£70k-per-week

3. Maxwel Cornet

£65k-per-week

4. Adam Armstrong

£60k-per-week

5. Jan Bednarek

£60k-per-week

Stephens is only £15k-per-week off entering the top five highest earners at Southampton, with his recent suspension exposing the fact his hefty take home might not be warranted.

With Brereton-Diaz, there will be a hope that he does improve for the Saints moving forward away from Stephens’ woes, as the former Sheffield United man did fire home six goals last season in the division for the Blades.

Back to Stephens, however, and Martin will need to have a frank talk with the experienced defender soon about his future on the South Coast, with his current deal at the Premier League side up next summer.

He could still be important this season as Southampton aim to keep their heads above water in the challenging league, but his performances will have to drastically pick up, after his horror show display against Man United.

'Took 20 seconds!' – Red Bull chief reveals how easy it was to tempt Jurgen Klopp back to work after Liverpool exit

Jurgen Klopp was ready to join Red Bull within 20 seconds of hearing their financial offer as the ex-Liverpool coach prepares to start his new job.

Klopp was expected to take a lengthy break from football after he stepped down as Liverpool coach in the summer, but by early-October he had signed a contract to take over as head of global football at the energy drinks company, which owns German club RB Leipzig, Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg and MLS outfit New York Red Bulls. The German manager will begin work in January.

Klopp's decision proved controversial among fans and some of his former players, though the ex-Borussia Dortmund boss has defended his move. The 57-year-old will reportedly earn around €12 million (£10m/$12.5m) per year in his new position, a figure it took little time for him to say yes to, according to Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff.

WHAT MINTZLAFF SAID

"Over the last 20 years, I have experienced, helped shape and negotiated many negotiations in football. I have to say that when the yes was there, it was the easiest. Not because we offered him an unbelievable financial package, on the contrary," he said on "We spoke about the financial side for 20 seconds because he said he was up for the task. I hope he doesn't hear that now, because then he'll think that he and his agent negotiated poorly. But no, financially it took 20 seconds. When the yes was there, it was one of the easiest negotiations I've had in 20 years."

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Slot did not hold back his frustration at referee Tony Harrington during Liverpool's match against Fulham at Anfield. He was shown a yellow card in the 57th minute for his outburst following a Curtis Jones tackle which the Dutchman thought was excellent, however, the official disagreed, brandishing a card at the midfielder and then the manager and prompting boos from the Merseyside crowd.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The offence meant Slot was shown his third yellow card of the season, earning him a one-match touchline ban. He had previously been booked in Liverpool's Premier League matches against Chelsea and Arsenal, meaning a suspension is incoming and he will be forced from the touchline and into the stands.

  • WHAT SLOT SAID

The Liverpool boss spoke about his booking after the game. He told reporters: "There were a few moments when I could have been given a yellow card. It's an emotional game and we were a man down, it's frustrating. It's good to see our performance after so many setbacks. It's difficult to judge for me because I only see it in real-time like the referee. We have to accept what VAR sees. You know how important these decisions can be. We ended up with a draw and I don't think we can blame the referee for that."

    WHAT NEXT FOR SLOT?

In the aftermath of a crazy game against Fulham, Slot will likely need some time to calm down before planning ahead for Liverpool's next Premier League match against Tottenham. But with Arsenal also drawing on Saturday, he will feel less pressure when setting up his team for the trip to the capital. In the meantime, Liverpool take on Southampton in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Fakhar Zaman: 'Don't regret not getting the double, regret losing the match'

Temba Bavuma calls Pakistan opener’s innings “incredible… the best I’ve come across”

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Apr-20212:23

Fakhar Zaman on his run-out: ‘Fault was mine as I was busy looking out for Haris Rauf’

For a little while, the memory may have drifted back to Abu Dhabi, over a decade ago, when Abdul Razzaq pulled off one of Pakistan’s most improbable heists against South Africa. In the end Pakistan – basically Fakhar Zaman – fell desperately close, closer than the 17-run margin suggests. But had they pulled it off, it would’ve been of a different order of magnitude of improbable from that memorable Abu Dhabi night, even accounting for the runs inflation in the years since.Pakistan were 70 for 2, 71 for 3, 85 for 4, 120 for 5, 186 for 6 and 205 for 7, all the while with Zaman at the other end, playing an unusually restrained innings. It was only after he got to his 100, at a shade under a run-a-ball in the 39th over that he really blew the game open. Pakistan were already seven down and 130 short at that stage, but a flurry of seven sixes across the next five overs, five of them off Tabraiz Shamsi, pulled Pakistan right back into it.In the process Zaman broke a few records, and though the manner of his dismissal ultimately grabbed the attention, once the dust of settles there a proper appraisal of this innings might begin. And it may well see his 193 rank among the greatest one-day innings played by a Pakistani. Temba Bavuma, the South Africa captain, thought it a bit more. “He played an incredible innings,” he said. “It’s the best I have come across. To chase down 340 single-handedly is always tough. But the innings he played was an incredible one. He remained quite clear.”Related

It won’t be lessened any by the fact that he got so close to a second ODI double (that too in southern Africa).”I don’t regret not getting the double, I regret losing the match,” he said afterwards. “If we had won this it would’ve been amazing so my regret is about that. The situation was such that I was only focusing on getting the win, not the double. I couldn’t finish it but I’d take scoring less runs than this and winning the game.”Personally it was a timely innings. Zaman had been in lean ODI form for a while – this was his first hundred since May 2019 and he was averaging a touch over 25 in the period in between.Initially that seemed to be playing on his mind though it turned out that Pakistan’s stumbling start and the nature of South African wickets for openers played a bigger part in his early sedateness. He was going at over a run-a-ball before Babar Azam and then Mohammad Rizwan fell in quick succession, but he went from 25 off 21 to a fifty off 70 thereafter. It was around that period, with Pakistan five down and with Shamsi entrenched at one end, that he thought he would start going after it and felt that the chase was still on.Interestingly enough, it was a chat with Sarfaraz Ahmed – former captain and now part of the squad but no longer in the side – during a drinks break that convinced him to go for it.”Yes, to be honest [I thought we could win it even then], I think around the 25th over I just called Saifi [Sarfraz Ahmed], he knows my game, I talked to him and said ask Babar can I start playing my natural game because Shamsi was bowling with small boundaries,” he said. “At that time I was feeling that if I start hitting then I could win the game for Pakistan.”When wickets were falling and we were 200 for 7, I was just telling the others coming in to stick around. Don’t get out. Don’t worry about the runs, don’t get out. The wickets here, you can’t stop runs on so I was just telling them to stick around with me, don’t get out.”What became evident the longer the chase went was the absence of one durable partner. It was the lack of stickability at the top, in fact, that Pakistan were likely to rue the most.”If you’re the first batsman, or the number 11, the first 10-15 runs are very difficult on these pitches,” Zaman said. “On Asian wickets it isn’t like that but here it is. Unluckily not many of our top order got through 20-25 balls. Until you get through that start here, you don’t get runs. Babar got a little set but others didn’t so people got out quickly. Had anyone gotten set, it would’ve become easier but unfortunately it just didn’t happen.”

Everton trying to hijack promoted club’s move for £25,000-a-week midfielder

Everton are thought to be making a late move to hijack one of their Premier League rivals' attempt to land a midfielder this summer, according to one report.

Sean Dyche building strong squad

Though the Toffees have lost Amadou Onana this summer, with the Belgian joining Aston Villa in a £50m deal, their squad currently looks stronger than it did last season. So far, Sean Dyche and co. have managed to sign five new players ahead of the new season kicking off this weekend, when they face Brighton at Goodison Park.

They have replaced Amadou Onana with Aston Villa youngster Tim Iroegbunam, while they have added creative flair with the loan addition of Jesper Lindstrom from Napoli.

The Toffees have also sought out extra fire-power after finishing the 23/24 season with just 42 Premier League goals, the second lowest in the division and one fewer than relegated Sheffield United. To do that, they have added former Sheffield United striker Iliman Ndiaye from Marseille in a £15m move, who struggled at Marseille and has completed a quickfire return to English football.

The Toffees are still targeting reinforcements in the midfield department.

ByEthan Lamb Aug 15, 2024

Perhaps most importantly, Dyche's side have kept hold of Jarrad Branthwaite despite interest from Manchester United, and have bolstered their defence with the arrival of centre-back Jake O'Brien from Lyon, with the defender scoring just 10 minutes into his unofficial Toffees debut and on course to quickly become a fan favourite at Goodison Park.

They are thought to be keen on adding further reinforcements in midfield, and had earmarked Kalvin Phillips as a potential option, but now have been forced to change tack.

Everton eyeing transfer hijack

That comes with Phillips on the verge of joining Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town on loan for the upcoming campaign, which has led Everton to look elsewhere. But their eyes remain largely focused on Portman Road, with reports claiming that they are attempting a late hijack for seemingly fellow Ipswich-bound midfielder Jens Cajuste this summer.

The £25,000-a-week Napoli midfielder is expected to leave Italy this summer and had been on the verge of joining Brentford, even passing a medical with the Bees only for a move to collapse. He only arrived in Naples 12 months ago, but failed to nail down a starting berth at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium despite making 26 Serie A appearances.

Now, the Serie A ace is back on the market, and Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio [Via Sport Witness] reports that Everton have "asked for information" on the midfielder as they weigh up an 11th hour move to sign him ahead of Ipswich.

The Toffees have already brought one player from Naples to Goodison Park this summer in Lindstrom, and the report adds that the two clubs have a "good working relationship" as a result of previous talks, which could allow them to swoop in ahead of Ipswich Town.

As it happened: Australia vs India, 2nd Test, Melbourne, 4th day

2.50pm: India win by eight wickets

Shubman Gill drives down the ground•Getty Images

Bowled out for 36. Virat Kohli goes home. Mohammed Shami out of the tour. Umesh Yadav limps from the attack. India had to overcome so much that their victory at the MCG, achieved midway through the fourth day by eight wickets, will forever have a part in their cricket folklore. Whether it is part of something even greater will depending on the next three weeks, but for now they can reflect on one of great bounce back victories. The early loss of two wickets will have left India grateful – and Australia rueful – that the target wasn’t in three figures, but it never threatened to be become nervy. Australia’s lower order made them work for the final four wickets during the morning session but they could never break free of the stranglehold on their scoring, so by the time R Ashwin wrapped up the innings on the stroke of a delayed lunch the lead stood at only 69. Their final tally of 200 in 103.1 overs was their slowest Test innings on home soil since 1986 and they managed just 10 boundaries.

2.05pm: Nerves for India?

Australia have taken two early ones. Is that enough to put India on edge? The struggling Mayank Agarwal edged a big drive against Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins claimed Cheteshwar Pujara again. India’s No. 3 played an uncharacteristically loose flat-footed drive which he thick-edged to gully. A small target has just got a little bigger

1.00pm: Lunch – Australia 200 all out

Mohammed Siraj celebrates the wicket of Cameron Green•Getty Images

India will need 70 to level the Test series. It took them all the morning session to work through Australia’s lower order – it was extended with the innings nine down – before R Ashwin wrapped things when Josh Hazlewood shouldered arms and had his off stump clipped. Australia scored at under two-an-over during the innings, a testament to how well India kept control. It was another interesting session for the DRS as well. Mitchell Starc though he was out, caught at slip, off Ravindra Jadeja but the replays showed he had hit his boot as the ball rebounded off the pad and he was able to make a long walk back to the middle having got almost to the boundary rope. Then late in Australia’s innings Starc survived a line-ball lbw decision when beaten by Ashwin’s carrom ball, the tracker showing it to hitting a good portion of the bails but it remained umpire’s call which had been not out on the field.DRS debates will likely rumble on, but barring something extraordinary India should have wrapped this up by tea.

12.10pm: India chip away

India have made inroads with the new ball, firstly Jasprit Bumrah bouncing out Pat Cummins and then Mohammed Siraj ending a very good innings from Cameron Green when he picked out midwicket with the pull. Australia’s lead is approaching 50, but they have just two wickets in hand. Green innings, in which he faced 146 balls, was very promising and should ensure that his position is not up for debate for the remainder of the series as Australia try to work out what to do with their misfiring batting order.

11.30am: Steve Smith on his struggles

Steven Smith has spoken about his lean series to SEN Radio this morning:”At the moment I’m searching for time in the middle; that’s the most important thing for me,” he said. “When I look at this year, 64 balls is the longest I’ve spent in the middle, during those one-day games.”For me, that’s important. I find a lot of rhythm out in the middle. You can bat as much as you want in the nets but there’s nothing that can replicate what a game can do, so that for me is what I’m searching for at the moment. That can be tough to do, particularly in a Test match when you’ve got some quality bowlers.”And on his battle with Ashwin, he added:”I probably haven’t played Ashwin as well as I would’ve liked; I probably would’ve liked to have put him under a bit more pressure. I’ve sort of let him dictate terms and that’s something I’ve probably never let any spinner do in my career.”I’ve sort of taken it to them, been a bit more aggressive and made them change things. I haven’t allowed that to happen, probably because I’m searching for just being out there for long enough. It’s kind of a two-edged sword in a way, but I think I’ve just got to have the confidence to take it on and play my game.”

11.15am: The new ball

Australia have got through the first phase of the day up to the 80-over mark but have only been able to squeeze out 16 runs. They will now have to combat the new ball to have a genuine chance of building a competitive lead. India hustled through their overs, especially R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, building pressure on Cameron Green and Pat Cummins. Both batsmen played quite well – bringing up a fifty partnership – although found it difficult to break the shackles.

10.35am: Have your say

10.00am: A twist to come?

India are on the brink. Australia lead by just two runs with Cameron Green and the bowlers to try and haul the lead towards something defendable. It’s a huge ask. Even if India don’t break through straightaway the new ball is available in 14 overs. Still, stranger things have happened and in this of all years we probably shouldn’t rule out anything. If India do wrap up the game it will have to go down as one of their finest ever victories: bowled out for 36, Virat Kohli goes home, Mohammed Shami injured and then yesterday Umesh Yadav limps off as well.Plenty of questions for Australia to ponder especially around a batting line-up that has completely lost its shape. The return of David Warner can’t come soon enough. They won’t make wholesale changes (for one, the biosecure bubble doesn’t really allow it) but there isn’t really a player in the top six who can claim to have played at the top of their game yet – although a nod to Matthew Wade for how he has adapted to opening.

Mohamed Salah, Steven Gerrard and the 25 best Liverpool players of the 21st century – ranked

GOAL counts down the greatest Reds of the past quarter-century, based on talent, trophies, impact and longevity

After struggling terribly during the tail end of the 21st century, Liverpool have re-established themselves as one of the best clubs in world football over the past 25 years, winning two Champions Leagues and a UEFA Cup.

Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez played pivotal parts, with both men enjoying success in continental competition. However, it was only after the arrival of Jurgen Klopp, after yet another slump, that the Reds really reclaimed their place among the elite. Under the German, Liverpool not only ended their 30-year English title drought, they also won a sixth European Cup.

Of course, none of these things could have been achieved without top-class players, and Anfield has witnessed an awful lot of them over the past 25 years. Who are the best, though?

Below, GOAL counts down the 25 finest footballers to have lined out for Liverpool this century, with their inclusion and rankings taking a variety of factors into account, including talent, trophies, impact and longevity (only those to have spent at least three seasons at the club have been considered for selection).

As always, let us know in the comments section who should be higher, who should be lower, who shouldn't be there at all and who's been criminally overlooked!

Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱Getty Images Sport25Joel Matip

It was such a pity that Joel Matip's Liverpool career ended on such a low, with the Cameroonian suffering an ACL injury in December 2023 that ruled him out for the remainder of his final season at Anfield. If Klopp had remained as manager, Matip may well have been offered a new deal, given the German rated the defender so highly. After all, Matip had joined on a free transfer from Schalke in 2016 and went on to form a formidable centre-back pairing with Virgil van Dijk that provided the foundation for the 2019 Champions League success.

Injuries became an issue thereafter, but Matip still managed to become a cult hero on the Kop, as much for his character as the quality of his defender. As Klopp said, his assist against Spurs in Madrid "detonated an explosion in the LFC family. What a moment. What a player."

It's often forgotten just how good a player Daniel Sturridge was when fully fit – primarily because he could never stay fully fit for long. The former England international was plagued by injuries throughout his time at Anfield – he never managed to play more than 29 league games across a single season – but when he was in peak physical condition, he was sensational.

Sturridge was an atypical English forward in that he was technically gifted and blessed with a flair for the spectacular, making the partnership he formed with Luis Suarez, which so nearly propelled Liverpool to the 2013-14 title, box-office viewing. Javier Mascherano upset Liverpool fans with the way in which in went about securing a move to Barcelona and he knew it too. Plenty of Liverpool fans will freely admit that they were puzzled by the club's decision to pay £41 million ($55m) for Diogo Jota in September 2020, but the recruitment team knew exactly what they were doing. This was a hard-working and technically excellent attacker capable of playing anywhere across the forward line, making him an ideal signing for Klopp.

At the time of writing, he's scored 59 goals for Liverpool in all competitions, but it would have been so many more had he not been repeatedly sidelined by injury over the years. Indeed, Jamie Carragher has repeatedly argued that Jota is the best finisher the club has ever had during the Premier League era – which is quite the compliment when one considers the quality of his rivals for that particular title.
