Arsenal transfer news on Marco Asensio

Arsenal are reportedly battling Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United to sign Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio on a free transfer this summer.

The Lowdown: Talks scheduled

It was reported earlier this month that Asensio’s agents were flying to London to feel out interest in the Premier League, with Madrid not wanting to talk about a new deal until March or April.

His contract expires in the summer, meaning that he can leave as a free agent at the end of the season.

The Latest: Competition…

As per Football Insider, Tottenham and United are also battling with Arsenal to sign Asensio, providing that he does not sign a contract extension.

They have now been ‘in contact’ over a potential deal which would see him join for free come the summer.

The Verdict: No-brainer

To sign a player of Asensio’s quality and experience for free is a no-brainer for the Gunners.

Hailed as ‘spectacular’ by his former agent Horacio Gaggioli, Asensio has had a great career at the age of 27, winning no fewer than three UEFA Champions League titles with Madrid, along with a host of other major accolades.

The winger has also been capped 35 times by Spain, and at 27, is a player only just about to enter his prime.

Nonetheless, Asensio would still have a sizeable sell-on value as well, if for some reason it did not work out at the Emirates Stadium.

Newcastle could ditch Wilson for Ivan Toney

One man who has been repeatedly linked with a return to Newcastle United since his exit back in 2018 is Brentford talisman, Ivan Toney, with the 26-year-old having blossomed into a fearsome and consistent attacking threat in his post-St James’ Park career.

Having been snapped up by the Magpies from Northampton Town at the age of 19 in the summer of 2015, the Englishman went on to make just four first-team appearances for the club over the next few years, with much of his time having been spent out on loan lower down the footballing pyramid.

The striker’s eventual permanent move to Peterborough United proved particularly fruitful as he bagged 49 goals in just 94 games across all fronts, having since netted 61 goals in only 110 games for the Bees – notably scoring 33 times to fire Thomas Frank’s side to promotion during the 2020/21 campaign.

Such prolific form has ensured that the “dangerous” marksman – as lauded by Chelsea boss Graham Potter – is beginning to attract interest from the Premier League’s elite clubs, with reports during the summer having linked the Tynesiders with a possible £30m approach for their former asset.

That was followed by further links at the tail-end of last year, despite Newcastle’s capture of fellow forward Alexander Isak, with it seemingly abundantly clear that he is a player on Eddie Howe’s radar.

Any hopes of re-signing the 6 foot 2 dynamo have now been boosted following claims made by transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, with the respected journalist revealing in his CaughtOffside daily briefing that a possible exit from west London could be on the horizon:

“There will be a chance to leave for Ivan Toney in the summer but only if the right proposal will arrive, Brentford will not sell for a ‘normal” price.”

The addition of such a ruthless presence could well prove bad news for current leading man, Callum Wilson, with the injury-prone striker having not been able to match Toney’s rampant top-flight form of late.

While the latter man boasts a haul of 25 league goals since the start of the 2021/22 campaign, including 13 goals in just 19 games so far this season, the aforementioned Wilson has just 15 top-flight goals to his name in that time.

Although the former Bournemouth man did net an early strike in the draw with West Ham United at the weekend, that was the 30-year-old’s first league goal since returning from World Cup duty, with persistent absences having become a theme of his spell on Tyneside.

Despite being a “hugely important” part of Howe’s side – according to his manager – there are lingering doubts over whether he – nor Isak – can truly be relied upon to deliver the goods, with pundit Stan Collymore stating earlier this week:

‘They both have their own attributes to offer, but I’m just not sure either player is the type to wear the iconic number nine shirt and bag 20-plus goals a season.’

Turning to Toney – who is the third-highest scorer in the division this term – could potentially prove something of an upgrade, with the one-time Shrewsbury Town loanee also providing the benefit of his creativity when leading the line after producing eight big chances already this season, compared to just two for Wilson.

Equally, while the latter man ranks in just the bottom 23% for aerial duels won and the bottom 15% for interceptions made among his European peers, it would appear that Toney is far more of a physical focal point in attack, as he ranks in the top 15% and that top 8% for those same two metrics, respectively.

Although Wilson has been a reliable servant in recent years who can be truly lethal when fit and firing, the possible signing of his compatriot could well see him fall swiftly down the striking pecking order.

West Ham: Ollie Scarles can ditch Cresswell

West Ham United have struggled to live up to the immense standards set by David Moyes this season, as it seems like they are finally feeling the effects of performing above their station for so long.

Few could have expected them to uphold the phenomenal standards that saw them earn sixth and seventh-placed finishes in consecutive seasons, not to mention their mesmeric run to the Europa League semi-finals, but eventually, these things must come to an end.

That’s not to suggest the Scotsman did not try and keep the good times rolling, outlined in their heavy expenditure over the summer in which eight new faces were welcomed to the London Stadium.

They may well turn it around, but for now, they find themselves truly immersed in a relegation battle for this year.

There have been plenty of poor performers throughout an ageing squad, in which many of the experienced heads have started to creep past their sell-by date.

One such example is Aaron Cresswell, who has been at the club for nearly nine years now.

The 33-year-old had established himself as one of the Premier League’s most consistent full-backs, boasting defensive tenacity paired with a cutting edge going forward. Whilst the former remains, in recent seasons he has seen the latter’s return diminish.

In this campaign, he is yet to record a goal or an assist in domestic competition. He also earned particular scorn last season for his two red cards during that infamous European run, as he was lambasted for letting his team down.

Few will likely have forgotten what could have been such a costly couple of mistakes, and as such could call for the youth to now be employed.

They will surely want to see an increased emphasis on academy production and a first-team pathway paved, after seeing Newcastle United snatch one of their brightest talents last month in Harrison Ashby.

Oliver Scarles would be the natural replacement for Cresswell, and the 17-year-old has already begun staking his claim following his first senior appearance late in 2022.

With seven goal contributions in just ten games for the U18s, the teenage sensation is proving himself far too technically proficient for youth football. He even translated that into the U23s, where he has notched his first goal too.

It has been a whirlwind season for the youngster, who is lauded as one of the shining lights expected to soon break into the first team.

Moyes has been particularly vocal in his praise for Scarles, as he offered this verdict after he had shone during his debut:

“We think he’s stylish on the ball, he’s composed but he’s got a lot of growing to do and he has a 16-year-old body at the moment.”

It is clear that, should he put the work in, he could soon be ready for some regular senior football. It all relies on him preparing his body for that challenge, as his quality on the ball already puts him at the necessary level.

Chelsea keen on signing Moises Caicedo

Chelsea are eyeing up Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo as the potential solution to their current midfield issues, according to a fresh transfer report.

The Lowdown: Caicedo a wanted man

The Ecuadorian has stood out as one of the Seagulls’ most important players in recent times, providing energy and quality in the middle of the park.

Caicedo has started 16 of Brighton’s 17 Premier League matches so far this season, averaging 2.9 tackles per game, which is only matched by Alexis Mac Allister on the south coast.

Liverpool have been constantly linked with a move for the 21-year-old but now it looks as though they could face competition.

The Latest: Chelsea keen on signing

According to The Guardian‘s Jacob Steinberg, Chelsea are ‘lining up a move’ for Caicedo, having become ‘frustrated’ in their attempts to sign Argentina World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez.

The Brighton man’s signature is seen as ‘more achievable’ than teammate Mac Allister, who is also considered a target.

The Verdict: Exactly what the Blues need

Chelsea’s midfield has looked ageing and one-dimensional at times this season, with N’Golo Kante and Jorginho now in their 30s and Mateo Kovacic turning 29 this year.

Caicedo could be the perfect player to come in and provide some bite and fresh legs in the middle of the park, considering he has averaged 1.4 interceptions per match in the league this season, not to mention showcasing his technical quality with an 87.7% pass completion rate

Graham Potter knows the youngster inside out after their time together at Brighton, which can only bode well – he hailed him as ‘fantastic’ last summer – and he could help turn Chelsea’s stuttering season around.

Leeds reignite interest in Bamba Dieng

Leeds United are believed to have reignited their interest in Marseille attacker Bamba Dieng, according to a new transfer rumour.

The Lowdown: Dieng linked with Leeds move

The 22-year-old has been linked with a move to the Whites in the recent past, with Jesse Marsch considering him a potentially strong attacking addition.

Dieng has only actually made one start for Marseille in Ligue 1 so far this season, but he is considered a bright young player with 17 caps for Senegal, four of which came at the 2022 World Cup.

It now looks as though Leeds could still swoop for the African starlet, although they are far from alone in showing an interest.

The Latest: Whites reignite interest

According to 90min, the Whites have ‘resurrected their interest’ in Dieng ahead of a potential transfer during the January window.

Leeds are one of five Premier League clubs in the mix, however, with Crystal Palace, West Ham, Leicester City and Everton all mentioned in the report, too.

The Verdict: Long-term capture

Dieng is a player of undoubted potential – he has been compared to Chelsea legend Didier Drogba by El-Hadji Diouf –  so he could be an intriguing signing by Leeds.

More quality and depth are required in attacking areas at Elland Road, given Patrick Bamford’s injury troubles, and the Marseille man could provide just that, having netted 10 times in 50 matches for the French outfit and being labelled a “super” player by French journalist Robin Bairner.

At 22, Dieng’s best days should lie ahead of him, and the fact that he can play anywhere across the frontline will surely appeal to Marsch.

Wolves: Old Gold ‘in discussions with up to 15 players’

Wolves are currently ‘in discussions with up to 15 players’ as manager Julen Lopetegui is promised financial backing, according to reports

The Lowdown: Old Gold eye moves…

Since the Spaniard’s appointment, the Premier League relegation-battlers have been linked with January signings as the Molineux side also edge closer and closer to securing Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha.

Wolves are reliably believed to be targeting six major signings by the end of next month and the Old Gold want to secure three of those new additions as soon as January 1 (BBC).

Lopetegui’s side currently sit bottom and have scored the fewest goals out of any side in the division, prompting club owners Fosun International to turn to the former Sevilla coach with proven experience in Europe.

The Latest: Wolves in talks with 15 players…

According to The Times, there has been some news on the extent of Fosun’s aim to support Lopetegui in the transfer market.

The reliable newspaper claims Wolves are currently ‘in discussions with up to 15 players’ and their boss has been promised financial backing this winter.

They back the BBC’s previous claim that six signings is a realistic target and the likes of Man United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka are indeed on their radar.

The Verdict: Good news…

Wolves being in contact with up to 15 players could be seen as a bit of a scattergun approach but it also shows just how much Fosun wish to back their new manager.

It’s been reported elsewhere that the club hierarchy now has Lopetegui’s list of transfer targets in hand and it will be interesting to see just how could come through the door at Molineux,

Everton urged to sell Anthony Gordon

Everton have been urged to cash in on their 21-year-old star Anthony Gordon should they receive a “decent” offer, according to pundit Gabby Agbonlahor.

The Lowdown: Steady progression

Having burst onto the scene with Everton, Gordon has endured steady progression, particularly across the last season and a bit.

Last term, the England under-21 star bagged four goals and two assists from 35 games for Everton to register himself as the fourth-highest scorer in the Premier League.

This season, Gordon sits as the Toffees’ top scorer, though that has not too difficult to achieve for a side who rank as the joint-second-lowest scorers in the league. Of those 11 goals scored in the Premier League, Gordon has scored three.

The Latest: Everton urged to cash in

According to talkSPORT pundit Agbonlahor, Everton should look to cash in on Gordon if a “decent” offer comes to fruition.

The former Aston Villa star’s claim comes in wake of Gordon’s links to Tottenham Hotspur, who are said to be monitoring him.

On those links, Agbonlahor told Football Insider: “If Spurs are interested in Anthony Gordon, I would definitely sell him.

“I feel like he hasn’t done anything really since he got linked with a move to Chelsea.

“Lampard’s been playing him from the bench in the last few games. That’s strange with the quality that he’s got.

“He’s not been putting in the performances. Did the big-money transfer links get to his head? There are questions to be asked there.

“He needs to sort himself out because clubs might be interested but they might not if they see your performances can drop so easily.

“I think if Everton can get a decent amount, they would sell him.”

The Verdict: For the right price…

Considering Everton’s troubles up-top, they would benefit from cashing in on Gordon and investing in a creative midfield outlet and a direct wide-man.

The Toffees have created 18 chances and rank as the seventh-worst in this aspect, though it is worth noting that they have underachieved in terms of their Expected Goals [xG] tally which is down to their total of 16 big chances missed.

A direct wide-forward who could operate in the half-space and take some pressure off of the main target man could work wonders.

If Everton decide to cash in on Gordon, then they should employ a similar approach.

Though, it has to be for the right price.

Sunderland had a mare with van Nistelrooy

Sunderland have enjoyed the luxury of a number of talented strikers over the years and are currently benefitting from Ellis Simms and Ross Stewart’s knack for finding the back of the net.

The likes of Kevin Phillips, Darren Bent, and Jermain Defoe are other forwards who had fantastic spells in front of goal at the Stadium of Light, but there is one player who could have added his name to that list – Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Back in 2000, Black Cats boss Peter Reid revealed that the prolific Dutch marksman was a player on their radar in 1997, saying:

”He’s a quality player and someone we were looking to buy three seasons ago when he was still something of an unknown. It was just after we started back in the First Division.

“At the time he was playing for Heerenveen and I think he was only 19. But they quoted us £5 million which at the time was just far too high a price for a player we could not totally be sure would be a success.”

The striker ended up signing for PSV in the summer of 1998 and plundered an exceptional 77 goals and 20 assists in 90 appearances for the Eredivisie outfit.

This led to Manchester United snapping him up in 2001 for a fee reported to be in the region of £19m and he enjoyed a phenomenal five-year spell at Old Trafford.

The Netherlands international scored 150 goals and assisted 25 in 219 matches in all competitions for the Red Devils, winning the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the League Cup.

Van Nistelrooy was once described as a “devastating” finisher by his former teammate Rio Ferdinand and Louis Saha also hailed the striker, saying:

“He has the ultimate mentality of a striker. He’s always concentrating so he can be in the right position to anticipate a pass or be in the right place to receive it. That’s what makes him so effective.

“There is nobody in the world like him. David Trezeguet is a similar player but he doesn’t have the same quality, control and technique. Ruud keeps control of the ball with three players trying to get it off him. He is the complete forward.”

Reid and Sunderland certainly made a mistake by deciding against signing the centre-forward, who ended up scoring a whopping 327 career goals at club level, for £5m in 1997.

He went on to become a prolific goalscorer in England and proved that he would have been a terrific signing at that price, particularly given that he signed for United for £14m more than that four years later. Indeed, the ex-manager is likely to have nightmares about that call over 25 years ago.

Newcastle backed to sign Chelsea’s Pulisic

Former Premier League defender and BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Alan Hutton has backed Newcastle United to sign Christian Pulisic in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Wingers wanted

It was revealed by Italian football journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano last week that the St. James’ Park outfit are looking to sign wingers in January, and will identify targets during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Pulisic is one player who has been linked as a target in the North East for January and will of course be in action for USA this month, and Hutton is full of praise for the possible deal.

The Latest: Pulisic move backed

Speaking to Football Insider, the former top flight defender said that Pulisic would ‘100 per cent’ choose a move to Tyneside in January, and that it would be an ‘easy decision’ for the Chelsea winger:

100 per cent.

It is pretty much an easy decision. He has come back into the Chelsea team in recent weeks, but he has not really been playing a position where he feels most comfortable. But he is back within the playing squad.

If Newcastle did come in for him it is something that he would definitely sit up and want to think about. I think there is only one direction that they are going in at the moment and it is definitely something that you would want to be part of.

It will be a huge decision for him, and I do not think he would take that one lightly.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-7/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Worth a punt?

There is no doubt that Pulisic lacks consistency in his game, with a total of 31 goal contributions over four seasons in the Premier League, and Chelsea would have expected higher numbers from their £58m signing.

However, it is a different story at international level, as Pulisic has netted 21 times and provided 12 assists in 52 senior caps for the USA (Transfermarkt), and is set to star and captain the side in the World Cup against England and Wales.

He is still only 24 years of age, and so there is plenty of room for improvement should he sign for the Magpies.

Nonetheless, if they could negotiate his £150,000-per-week wages down, he could turn out to be a shrewd purchase.

Welch rejoins Bears as bowling coach

Graeme Welch is rejoining Warwickshire as bowling coach after losing out on the same role with England to Essex’s Chris Silverwood.Welch served as bowling coach at Edgbaston for four years from January 2010, during which time the club won the County Championship title in 2012 and the Clydesdale Bank 40 in 2010.He left the club in 2014 to take up a role as elite performance director at Derbyshire but when that did not work out he subsequently moved to Leicestershire as assistant coach in September 2016 only for them to finish bottom of Division Two in the Championship.Welch’s reputation as a bowling coach remains unblemished, however, and Warwickshire were quick to hail his return as the next step in a coaching reshuffle that saw Alan Richardson released from the role last month.Ashley Giles, sport director at Warwickshire, said: “Graeme Welch is an outstanding bowling coach who was part of an excellent coaching team that delivered trophies at Edgbaston.”In our view he is one of the very best bowling coaches in the game and it came as no surprise to us when he was recently connected with the position of England bowling coach.”We are delighted that he has chosen to return to Edgbaston where he will not only be responsible for getting the first team back to winning ways but also building a bowling academy equipped to develop a new generation of bowlers, from all backgrounds, capable of delivering continued success in all formats for Warwickshire and the Birmingham Bears.”Welch said: “I have enjoyed my time at Leicestershire, but the chance to return to Edgbaston was one I could not turn down. I have been lucky enough to be part of successful Bears teams in the past as both player and coach and am very excited by the challenge of building a bowling academy which will bring success to the club on a sustained basis.”Leicestershire responded quickly to fill the vacancy, appointing John Sadler, who initially rejoined them as Second XI Coach last winter before taking charge of first team affairs alongside Graeme Welch for the final three matches of the 2017 season. Sadler and Paul Nixon, Leicestershire’s new coach, played in the same Foxes side and were both key members of the team that in the early years had the most successful record in the country.
