Ten Hag must boldly drop Manchester United man who’s not "able to run”

Last weekend, Manchester United frustrated Liverpool once again with a 2-2 draw that was almost identical to the FA Cup clash.

Although the result on paper is relatively impressive, the performance once again left a lot to be desired, and in truth, Jurgen Klopp’s side could have had a healthy lead at the break, given how often they broke through the Red Devils defence.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag

For a proportion of the United faithful, they would rather see complete performances than pick up unconvincing victories like they have all season.

Erik ten Hag must change his approach against Bournemouth this weekend, as they simply can’t afford to give the opponent so many opportunities, and that tweak could start with the removal of one player in particular.

Casemiro’s 23/24 campaign so far

After a relatively impressive first campaign in the Premier League, there may have been an expectation that Casemiro would continue to perform at the heart of the Man United midfield.

However, in October, the Brazilian picked up an injury that saw him miss 83 days of action and 17 matches in total, which left Ten Hag with a difficult squad selection dilemma.

Casemiro

Since returning from his setback, Casemiro’s performance standard has completely plummeted, with the basics even becoming a challenge at times, even being called a “liability” out of possession by football writer Casey Evans, who added that the Brazilian picks up too many bookings and gives away fouls in dangerous positions too often.

Nonetheless, the former Real Madrid ace has started 17 Premier League games this season, being preferred to Sofyan Amrabat in the defensive midfield position alongside Kobbie Mainoo.

The Man United target could be signed for £0 this summer.

ByTom Lever Apr 12, 2024 Why Casemiro must not start against Bournemouth

Unless personnel are changed, the same problems that have haunted the Red Devils since the first game of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers will continue to occur.

Unfortunately, Casemiro’s decline has been rather rapid, with the midfielder now visibly causing issues for his side rather than impacting the game in a positive manner.

This has been apparent over the last few months, but it was particularly highlighted against Liverpool last weekend, as he struggled on every front.

The Manchester Evening News’ player ratings from the game also support that, handing him a 5/10 rating for his performance, and the statistics from that game also suggest he was disappointing.

Having said that, as you can see, the 32-year-old was actually rather strong defensively, making four tackles and six clearances, which helped United pick up a point.

However, there’s little use in a player winning the ball back if they’re just going to give it away cheaply and continuously, which is where Casemiro has particularly fallen short recently.

The number 18 had a 69% pass accuracy, and he also lost possession 16 times, which prevented United from gaining control and, more alarmingly, he gave Liverpool plenty of chances to counter.

This complacency in possession simply cannot occur against the Cherries this weekend, with the side extremely strong on the counterattack with the quality of Dominic Solanke up front.

Kieffer Moore and Dominic Solanke celebrate for Bournemouth.

Furthermore, Casemiro was dribbled past on three occasions and lost six of his 11 duels, which proves his athleticism is now a problem, with journalist Richard Keys alluding to the fact that he’s not "able to run".

Overall, it’s quite clear that as each game goes by, Casemiro is struggling even more, with his decision-making on and off the ball becoming an issue, and it’s no surprise to see that he’s on the list of players to sell this summer.

Liverpool could hire a "special" Amorim alternative to replace Klopp

As the 2023/24 season draws to a close, it also marks the beginning of the end for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool tenure. It has been a historic reign for the German, who has won several honours at Anfield, including the Champions League in 2018/19 and the Premier League in 2019/20.

There are several names linked with the soon-to-be vacant Liverpool job. Arguably the favourite for the role is Sporting manager Ruben Amorim. The former Benfica midfielder has reportedly agreed on personal terms with the Reds and is rumoured to be signing a three-year contract at Anfield.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp

Amorim has been extremely successful for Sporting and has won four trophies during his time in charge, which includes a league title in 2020/21. Leões are hunting down their second league title under Amorim, and currently sit four points clear of Benfica with one game in hand.

However, it is not a guarantee that Liverpool will manage to acquire the services of Amorim, with other clubs showing interest. If they do not manage to appoint Amorim, there are other options Liverpool could look at, although perhaps one stands out more than the others.

The perfect alternative for Amorim

Should Amorim become unattainable for Liverpool in the summer, they could well instead turn their attention to Bologna manager Thiago Motta, who is taking Serie A by storm so far this season.

That's according to Ben Jacobs, who told GIVEMESPORT: "Thiago Motta is doing a brilliant job at Bologna, and Liverpool love candidates that have over performed based upon the resource available to them – so he cannot be discounted at this point, either.

“And when we say discounted, we’re talking about who is going to get to the final shortlist and who isn’t. And that’s what I mean about Liverpool – it’s a step-by-step process."

Amorim has a release clause of £25.7m in his current deal with Sporting, although there is not a release clause in Motta’s deal with Bologna, which his agent confirmed in an interview in February.

ruben-amorim-sporting-spurs-manager-live-updates-nagelsmann-levy-tottenham

Motta, a former midfielder who has played for the likes of Barcelona, Inter and PSG, is also not short of suitors this summer. One of the many clubs linked to him includes Liverpool’s rivals Manchester United, who could part ways with Erik ten Hag in favour of appointing Motta.

Motta's famous and unique style

The Athletic’s Serie A correspondent James Horncastle described Motta and his Bologna side as “special” recently on X, and it is easy to understand why, given the feats of a remarkable nature they are achieving this season.

Bologna are currently fourth in Serie A, on 58 points, three points clear of fifth place Roma. Whilst winning the Scudetto seems highly unlikely, they could certainly finish as high as second, and achieve Champions League qualification.

Thiago Motta

However, what makes Motta unique is the 2-7-2 system he employs, and as an extension of that, the way he sees football. To break it down further, Motta sees the players on the pitch in a vertical, rather than horizontal, formation, breaking down the pitch into three vertical sections rather than the usual defensive, midfield, and attacking lines most see the game.

One of Motta’s most interesting quotes surrounding his system and the way he views the pitch came when he was PSG U19s manager, in an interview he gave with Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport. Motta explained that the “goalkeeper counts as one of the midfield seven”.

Ideally, Motta would like his goalkeeper to push up when his side has the ball, becoming a true part of his side’s play and essentially becoming another midfield player.

This would translate well over to Liverpool, whose first-choice goalkeeper, Alisson, is confident with the ball at his feet, and would not have any issues playing further forward.

Indeed, the Brazilian averages 36.81 passes per 90 minutes this season, ranking him in the top 10% amongst goalkeepers in Europe’s big five leagues, as per Fbref, so he should have no issues adapting to Motta’s demands.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Motta’s Bologna are a side that likes lots of possession. According to Fbref, they average 58.3% of the ball per game in Serie A this season, which ranks them 15th in Europe’s big five leagues. Liverpool are one of the 14 sides better than them, with an average of 60.7% possession per match, placing them ninth. The Reds would not have any trouble adapting to Motta’s high-possession style, either.

The stats suggest Motta would certainly be a good fit for Liverpool, and whilst every club needs to adapt to a new manager, the transition to Motta would be fairly seamless and Liverpool could well hit the ground running under the former Italy international. If they do not land their number one target in Amorim, the Bologna manager could prove to be an astute second choice.

Liverpool could unleash "unplayable" 18 y/o Nunez replacement

What was that saying about rain? Liverpool are afflicted by, unfortunately, a torrential downpour of injury problems right now and supporters will be worried that Sunday's Carabao Cup final against Chelsea might suffer because of it.

However, first the Anfield outfit must defeat Luton Town, and they must do so without a host of first-team stars.

Diogo Jota injured for Liverpool.

First-placed in the Premier League, Jurgen Klopp will be confident in his side's ability to secure victory this evening but there is no question that current conditions could stifle an almighty bid for silverware across multiple fronts.

Liverpool injury news

Diogo Jota was forced off on a stretcher during Liverpool's recent victory over Brentford, and Klopp has since confirmed that the Portugal international faces "months" on the sidelines.

Goalkeeper Alisson, midfielders Curtis Jones, Dominik Szoboszlai, Thiago Alcantara and influential right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold are all out of action.

The club's German boss admitted that he might need to dip into the academy ranks once again this season, with questions over Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez's immediate fitness compounding the issues ahead of the clash against Luton.

Liverpool could unleash unlikely Nunez replacement

Cody Gakpo scored and assisted off the bench against Brentford but the dynamic Dutchman is not the only player who Klopp could call upon, even if he is likely to start, having demonstrated a willingness to hand teenage talents a platform.

One star who was namechecked by Klopp ahead of the Hatters' journey northward is 18-year-old forward Jayden Danns, who has been causing quite the stir at academy level.

Danns, born in Liverpool, has scored 16 goals from 16 appearances in all competitions this season and has been hailed as "unplayable" in the final third by U23 scout Antonio Mango, and now might be the perfect time to hand him that elusive professional debut.

Nunez, admittedly, is not the easiest forward to replace. Chastised for his profligacy by some, heralded as an "agent of chaos" by others – including journalist Theo Squires – the Uruguayan invariably makes his presence known in the final third and has a healthy return of 13 goals and 11 assists this season.

Speaking of his own playing style, Danns has noted his electric pace and eagerness to drop deep and surge forward with the ball at his feet.

Perhaps in this way, he can indeed emulate Nunez, who ranks among the top 13% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for progressive carries per 90, as per FBref.

Will Klopp take a risk on Danns, so young, so fresh from his formative years? The evidence would suggest that he has the quality to make an impression among the seniors and given the recent success with handing youngsters a chance to impress, why not?

Enzo Maresca will be Chelsea's new manager! Pep Guardiola's former assistant agrees shock five-year contract at Stamford Bridge after guiding Leicester back to Premier League

Leicester City boss Enzo Maresca has reportedly agreed to become Chelsea's new permanent manager on a five-year contract.

According to , Chelsea have reached an agreement to make Maresca their new head coach, and he's now set to replace Mauricio Pochettino on a long-term contract. The Blues will also have the option to extend Maresca's stay by an extra year, which means he could potentially be in the Stamford Bridge dugout until 2030.

Leicester are set to be paid a compensation fee by Chelsea as they bid farewell to Maresca after just one season, which saw the Italian mastermind their immediate return to the Premier League as Championship winners. Maresca had previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant at Manchester City and stuck to a similar tactical blueprint to his old mentor with the Foxes, who finished their Championship campaign with a whopping 97 points.

(C)Getty ImagesDID YOU KNOW?

has reported that Chelsea quickly identified Maresca as their No.1 target after parting ways with Pochettino last week, despite links with several other managers, including Ipswich Town's Kieran McKenna and departing Barcelona boss Xavi. The report adds that Maresca won Chelsea over with his plan to help their club record signing Enzo Fernandez unlock his full potential after his frustrating start to life in west London.

Chelsea are expected to make Maresca's arrival official in the coming days, and he will inherit a squad that managed to finish sixth in the Premier League, earning a Europa Conference League spot in the process. The 44-year-old will be on the touchline when the Blues head to the United States for their pre-season tour, with games against Wrexham, Celtic, Club America, Man City and Real Madrid already pencilled in.

Sky Sports reporter shares Gallagher update with Chelsea and Spurs in talks

To say it has been a year to forget for Chelsea in the Premier League would be an understatement. The Blues have endured a miserable 2023, with defeat after defeat coming their way no matter the manager. Todd Boehly has splashed the cash to no avail so far in an attempt to rebuild a squad that has failed to perform under Thomas Tucel, Graham Potter, Frank Lampard and now Mauricio Pochettino.

As the January transfer window arrives, the American owner could look to spend his way out of a problem that money hasn't exactly helped so far. But first, he may need to balance the books and that could hand Pochettino a major blow next month.

Chelsea transfer news

It's a rare day when Chelsea aren't stealing the headlines for their transfer activity, arguably more so than ever these days, with a number of arrivals coming through the Stamford Bridge doors. Before Pochettino can welcome some much-needed reinforcements again, however, he may need to bid farewell to one particular star player, who could swap one London club for another in a shock January move. It would see Chelsea handed even more bad news in a period of their history that they'll be keen to forget.

According to Sky Sports reporter Gianluca Di Marzio, Tottenham Hotspur are in "talks" to sign Conor Gallagher from Chelsea in January.

"Spurs are in talks with Chelsea trying to reach an agreement for Conor Gallagher's move to THFC."

Claims elsewhere suggest Spurs are close to reaching an agreement for Gallagher in a deal that could cost around €40m (£35m) next month. It would be some blow for the Blues, particularly if the England international went on and became an important player for their London rivals. As they struggle in mid-table, Gallagher's exit could be a frustrating way to start the new year for some. The mid-season deal is certainly one to keep an eye on, that's for sure.

"Important" Gallagher has been a standout at Chelsea

Even among the misery of Chelsea's campaign, Gallagher has stood out as one of the better players at Stamford Bridge this season, earning the praise of Pochettino as a result.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher

Speaking about the midfielder's future and his importance to his Chelsea side, Pochettino is clearly a fan of Gallagher, saying: “I don’t need to talk too much because it is not my decision. He is in the starting eleven in nearly all the games and is one of the captains. For me, he is the type of player that the club needs to have. He came from the academy and knows the identity of the club and he is very committed. You can see on the pitch how he runs, plays, and fights. He gives everything and he is a really important player. All coaching staff want this type of player in their team."

Premier League legend and pundit Jamie Carragher is certainly a fan too, hitting out at Chelsea's potential decision to sanction the sale of Gallagher on X:

Man City player ratings vs Fulham: Josko Gvardiol's a goal machine! All Arsenal can do now is pray as Croatian's double & more class from Phil Foden gets the job done

The left-back continued his remarkable goalscoring run as City moved back to the top of the Premier League table

What has Josko Gvardiol been eating? The Croatian failed to score in his first 32 matches for Manchester City but now he has five goals in his last seven outings. And he was in clinical form as Pep Guardiola's side strolled to a 4-0 win over Fulham in the west London sunshine.

Gvardiol got City off to a fine start by completing a 19-pass move and the only surprise was that they were not more goals to the good after utterly dominating the first half. Phil Foden put the visitors more at ease by doubling their lead after the break and then Gvardiol struck again.

The Croatian had the chance to score a hat-trick when City were awarded a late penalty but he passed up the opportunity and gave the ball to Julian Alvarez, who completed the rout. Now all Arsenal can do is beat Manchester United and pray for an unlikely favour from Tottenham next week. Otherwise, the Premier League title will be staying in Manchester for a record fourth consecutive year.

Contributed to the midfield dominance and got two assists to boot.

Rodri (8/10):

Controlled the game in his usual manner and looks set to end the season unbeaten as well as with another league title.

Kevin De Bruyne (7/10):

Set up the first goal and was always looking to create danger.

Erling Haaland (5/10):

Had a quiet game and will be disappointed he couldn't get on the scoresheet but he did use his strength to keep Fulham at bay.

Phil Foden (7/10):
