England survive top-order implosion as Sarah Glenn derails Pakistan's victory hopes

Knight, Jones engineer recovery from 11 for 4 to set up 53-run victory at Edgbaston

Valkerie Baynes11-May-2024England overcame a terrible start against Pakistan via a match-saving partnership of 67 between Amy Jones and Heather Knight, followed by a four-wicket haul to leg-spinner Sarah Glenn to win the opening match of their home international summer.Jones and Knight rescued the hosts from 11 for 4 after 17 balls of the first T20I, in front of a crowd of 12, 241 at Edgbaston. A powerful 41 not out off just 21 deliveries from Dani Gibson helped lift England to 163 for 6, a total which had looked unlikely in the third over following a top-order collapse that will give England plenty to work on despite the result.Glenn, playing her first match in an England shirt since she was concussed during the recent tour of New Zealand, kept Pakistan in check after they made a spirited start to the run-chase. She ended with 4 for 12 from her four overs, while seamer Lauren Bell took three and left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone and off-spinner Charlie Dean took one wicket each.England’s woeful startAlice Capsey’s drop of the head said it all. The ball had barely reached its zenith and begun to fall into the hands of Sidra Ameen but she knew the outcome, and its implications. England were 11 for 3 just 2.1 overs into the match and there was worse to come. Maia Bouchier carried plenty of hope into the middle after staking her claim as opener with an excellent tour of New Zealand in March, with Tammy Beaumont and Sophia Dunkley overlooked for this series. Bouchier tucked Waheeda Akhtar’s third ball to the fine-leg boundary but plinked the very next delivery straight to Nida Dar at mid-off. Danni Wyatt then spooned Sadia Iqbal to mid-on and Capsey followed, leaving England in dire trouble.England were without Nat Sciver-Brunt, who joined her team for the warm-up despite being ruled out on match eve to allow her to recover from a medical procedure. Her absence paved the way for Freya Kemp to walk in at No. 5, playing purely as a batter on her return from a back problem. But Kemp was part of terrible mix-up with Knight, who was unmoved as Kemp drilled an Akhtar delivery back towards the bowler and took off for a run, Akhtar throwing to wicketkeeper Muneeba Ali who whipped off the bails as Kemp retreated all too late.Middle-order rebuildAt 11 for 4, still in just the third over, it fell to Knight and Jones to rebuild. Jones, playing her 100th T20I and at her home ground, survived a tough chance at point off Akhtar when she was on 2 and, by the time she drove Fatima Sana through midwicket for four, she and Knight had dragged England up to 29 for 4 at the end of the powerplay. Jones then rocked back and pulled Akhtar for four in the next over and back-to-back fours off Rameen Shamim from Knight, clearing extra cover and swept through square leg, suggested the home side’s recovery was on track. Knight missed a reverse off Dar and was struck on the back knee but managed to overturn her lbw dismissal when the ball was shown to have hit her outside the line of off stump.Freya Kemp was run out despite a dive to cap a dismal start for England•Getty ImagesKnight didn’t stop when wrist-spinner Tuba Hassan was introduced, thundering a drive over long-on while Jones pulled and swept Rameen for twin fours at the start of the next over, so that by the halfway point of the innings, England were 63 for 4. Jones had been excellent on the sweep but it proved her undoing when she top-edged a Sadia full toss to deep square leg, where Natalia Pervaiz took a cool-headed catch to end her innings on 37 from 27 balls.Knight cleared the covers to bring up England’s 100 and she and Gibson added 41 runs together before Knight fell one run shy of her half-century, Tuba making the breakthrough as Knight skied the ball to Gull Feroza at mid-on. Ecclestone was put down on 11 by Gull at deep midwicket and Gibson struck Rameen’s next ball to the deep square leg boundary for her fourth four, with another to follow through extra cover in the same over as Gibson made her impact felt. She and Ecclestone put on an unbroken stand worth 44 for the seventh wicket.Pakistan start chase brightlyGull punished Bell’s low full toss down the ground for four in the first over and picked the gap beautifully through the covers for another boundary two balls later. Dean struck with her fourth ball when she trapped Sidra Ameen lbw. But Gibson conceded 21 runs off the next over as Sadaf Shamas picked off five boundaries with a combination of cover drives, a powerful shot over point, a flick past square leg and a cut to backward point.Jones took a wonderful diving catch to her left to remove Gull via an inside-edge off Bell and she needed far less effort to gather Muneeba’s top edge as she attempted to reverse-sweep Glenn, leaving Pakistan 66 for 3 in the eighth over. Dar was still running a single as she called for a review of her lbw dismissal off Glenn, which was overturned as replays showed the ball came off her glove. Sadaf fell to an unnecessary run-out when Dar dabbed a Dean delivery to midwicket and set off for a single that wasn’t on. Capsey gathered and threw to Jones with Sadaf well short of her ground, prematurely ending a promising knock of 35 off 24.Visitors fall apartFrom there, Pakistan’s pursuit fell apart. Dar’s slog-sweep off Glenn sailed towards Bouchier, who ran across from deep midwicket to make a difficult catch look effortless in front of a delighted Hollies stand. Pervaiz’s attempted late cut off Ecclestone ended with a faint edge landing in Jones’s gloves as Pakistan lost three wickets for six runs in the space of 10 balls. Bell took her second wicket when Rameem Shamim sent one high to deep midwicket as Wyatt ran a long way in to take a superb catch diving forwards. Glenn claimed two wickets in three balls when she had Tuba caught behind and bowled Akhtar with a beautiful leg-break. Bell claimed the last as Sadia was caught by Kemp to wrap up victory with 10 balls to spare.

Patricia Guijarro strike helps Spain complete comeback victory as Italy squeeze through to Euro 2025 knockout stage despite defeat

Patricia Guijarro and Esther Gonzalez's goals helped Spain beat Italy, who sneaked through to the Euro 2025 knockout stage despite a 2-1 defeat.

It was a clash of two contrasting philosophies when Spain took on Italy. The reigning world champions were, as usual, dominant on the ball, enjoying 77 per cent of possession in the first half. Whereas Italy stuck to their direct and counter-attacking football, which surprisingly caused enough trouble to La Roja.

In fact, the Italians hit the crossbar and a few moments later took the lead in the tenth minute when Oliviero struck home from close range. However, their joys were short-lived, as Spain took fewer than five minutes to equalise. Del Castillo played a measured give-and-go with Alexia Putellas to unlock Italy's defence and then rifled a shot into the top-left corner to get back into the match.

The goal lent them a spring in their step, and soon the Italians were chasing shadows. In the second half, they took just four minutes to get in front, and once again, it was Del Castillo who was in the thick of things. She skipped past four to five blue shirts before Martina Lenzini finally shook her off the ball. But her half-hearted clearance fell kindly for Guijarro, who swivelled her right foot on the ball to find the bottom-right corner.

Italy showed patience and tried to hit back with the few opportunities they carved out on the counter, but the gulf in quality between the two sides was too big to bridge. In the final few minutes, it looked inevitable that the third was coming, and Esther Gonzalez hit the final nail in the coffin with a typical poacher's finish after connecting to an inch-perfect cross from Putellas. It was her fourth goal in three matches in a wonderful tournament so far.

Nonetheless, Italy were through to the quarter-finals with four points from three matches, as Belgium finished third with three points after beating Portugal 2-1.

Del Castillo was taken off at the hour mark, but the damage had already been done. She scored the first, set up the second and if she had stayed on for the 90 minutes the Real Madrid forward could have perhaps taken home the match ball.

THE BIG LOSER

Italy were still in the game at 1-1, but after Spain took the lead, Montse Tome's troops did not give them another opportunity to sniff a comeback. And for the second, Lenzini must shoulder the blame. The defender should have cleared her lines, but a meek effort saw the ball fall for Guijarro, who was ready to take a mile given an inch.

India finish just ahead of Ireland in rain-hit contest

Visitors had scored two runs more than the DLS par score when bad weather ended the game

Rain had the final say but not before adding to a dramatic finish in Malahide, where India got over the line with a two-run win over Ireland.Craig Young’s back-to-back wickets moments before rain had stopped play loosened India’s grip, but in the end the powerplay hits from India’s openers and the bowling effort, led by Jasprit Bumrah on his return, proved just enough for the No.1 T20I side to finish ahead of Ireland.Bumrah’s double-wicket blow in the first over put India ahead for most of the game, but Ireland’s lower order, led by Barry McCarthy and Curtis Campher, resisted the early collapse. From 59 for 6, they helped drag Ireland to 139 for 7. McCarthy made a career-best unbeaten 51 off 33 balls while Campher contributed 39 off 33 balls. The tense finish
There was always a sense that rain could be a factor in the game, but despite a drizzle through the afternoon the umpires didn’t stop play until it became heavier. When five overs of India’s chase was completed, a result was guaranteed. At that stage, India were favourites with both Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal finding their groove after a sedate start to the chase. They had finished the powerplay with a six apiece in the last two overs of that phase, lifting India to 45 for 0 in six overs.Young then had Jaiswal caught at midwicket on 24 with a short ball. The chase tightened when Young had Tilak Varma gloving down the leg side to the wicketkeeper for a duck. At that point, India were only three runs ahead of the DLS par score, and another dismissal would’ve put Ireland ahead in the game.Sanju Samson, though, survived the hat-trick ball and guided a single to backward point. Ruturaj defended the next delivery before rain ended the game.McCarthy’s new high
McCarthy had scored just fifty – and one century – in his career before Friday. He came into bat 59 for 6 and scored four fours and as many sixes. He had the solid Campher for company, but both batters found it tough to score off spinners Ravi Bishnoi and Washington Sundar early on. However, when Bishnoi bowled one googly too many, McCarthy hit the game’s first six by hammering one over long-on, and from thereon, both batters scored the occasional boundary to push the team’s total.Though Campher ruined Bumrah’s spell with a four and six off consecutive balls in the 16th over, it was McCarthy who was causing more damage consistently. He gave debutant Prasidh Krishna a teaser of his power when he pulled him for four in the 15th over, and then he crunched two fours and a six off him in the 17th. The bowlers tried to vary their pace against both McCarthy and Campher and though they were successful to some extent, both batters gave Ireland late impetus. An Arshdeep Singh yorker eventually ended Campher’s stay and suggested that India would finish the bowling innings strong, but it wasn’t to be. McCarthy tore into Arshdeep in the 20th over with a four and two sixes – including one off a free-hit – to give the home fans something to cheer about.India bowling blows hot and cold
Bumrah, India’s captain for the series, started the day on the right note by winning the toss. After choosing to bowl, he made the best use of conditions by blazing through the Ireland top order. In his first over, he recovered from a first-ball four to knock Andy Balbirnie over with an inswinger and in the same over he had Lorcan Tucker paddling one behind to wicketkeeper Samson.Harry Tector then joined Tucker in the dugout following another failed ramp, this time off Prasidh. Bishnoi then struck with his second ball to deceive Paul Stirling with a googly and flatten his stumps. The pair soon added to their tally when Prasidh had George Dockrell hitting a short ball to cover and Bishnoi had Mark Adair adjudged lbw in the 11th over on review. However, India would’ve been disappointed at letting the seventh-wicket stand to last for 7.2 overs. Arshdeep changed his pace and often bamboozled McCarthy and Campher, but both batters managed to find the occasional boundary. It wasn’t until the 18th over that Campher was dismissed, and by then Ireland were already on course for a respectable total. Campher’s 22-run final over off Arshdeep indicated that there were still some concerns for India in the bowling department.

Leeds and Farke given new int'l break injury boost alongside Ethan Ampadu

Leeds United are set to be handed a welcome double injury boost which involves captain Ethan Ampadu.

Farke facing big Leeds calls ahead of Championship run-in

The Whites and Daniel Farke are now preparing for a dash to the line in the Championship, looking to beat Sheffield United and Burnley to promotion and the second-tier title.

Leeds have taken just five points from their last four games which has allowed the Blades and the Clarets to close in, with eight fixtures remaining starting against Swansea City on Saturday.

One of the big talking points after the 2-2 draw with QPR last time out was Wilfried Gnonto’s impact in the No. 10 position, an area of the pitch Farke could look to address over the coming weeks. Gnonto replaced Brenden Aaronson at half-time and received praise from Farke after helping Leeds take a point away from London.

“I was convinced he would make an impact. If I had opted for Ilia Gruev [to start the match] I would also have opted for Willy Gnonto. Perhaps we would have had a better start if we had made those changes. The feeling is he’s playing more and more to create good situations in the centre and that’s what he did in the second half.”

Unfortunately, after an injury scare away with Italy U21s in the international break, Gnonto may not be immediately available to Farke as Leeds wait to see the extent of the ankle issue. However, the Whites have two players who look set to be close to a return.

Leeds to welcome back Ampadu and Bamford for run-in

As per Joe Donnohue of The Yorkshire Evening Post, Ampadu has been stepping up his knee injury recovery during the international break and is on course to return to team training.

The versatile midfielder has missed Leeds’ last five games and the club weren’t sure if his knee problem would require surgery, but it looks as if he could play a part in the run-in.

Alongside Ampadu, Patrick Bamford is finally closing in on a return from a hamstring injury. Donnohue adds that the forward ‘has been working on match fitness at Thorp Arch over the recent weeks and during the international break brought himself closer to an on-field return’.

Bamford has only played once in 2025 due to a hamstring issue but like Ampadu, could feature in the final eight games. Two experienced players in the Leeds squad, the pair returning would be a much-needed boost for Farke, who will be hoping to have every senior player available between now and May.

Conway, Santner and Rayudu will reunite with Fleming under whom they won IPL 2023 last month. Rayudu, who had retired from the IPL after that final, is set to feature in his first franchise league outside of India. Conway was the Player of the Match in the rain-hit three-day final, scoring a 25-ball 47 in CSK’s successful chase of 171 in 15 overs in Ahmedabad. Dwayne Bravo, who was Chennai Super Kings’ bowling coach during their recent run to the IPL title, will return as a player for the MLC competition. The IPL winners will be joined by Australia’s seam-bowling allrounder Daniel Sams, who had recently opted not to take a state contract with New South Wales for better opportunities in franchise T20 cricket.

Celtic sold "incredible" gem for £2.5m, now he's similar to £100m PL star

Celtic head coach Brendan Rodgers may be hoping for a quieter summer when the next transfer window rolls around, as he has had to deal with plenty of player turnover in his two years back at Parkhead already.

The Hoops sold Jota to Al-Ittihad and Carl Starfelt to Celta Vigo in his first summer back at the club in 2023, whilst Aaron Mooy also decided to retire, which meant that the manager lost several key players early on.

Jota, of course, returned to Glasgow in the recent January transfer window, joining on a permanent deal from Rennes, but Rodgers did not get to work with the Portuguese star for his first 18 months at the club.

The Northern Irish boss also lost Kyogo Furuhashi in that window earlier this year, as the Japan international made the move to Ligue 1 side Rennes ahead of the second half of the season.

Rodgers was also dealt a blow when the club sold Danish attacking midfielder Matt O’Riley to Brighton & Hove Albion last summer for a club-record fee of more than £25m.

That significant fee, of course, allowed Celtic to reinvest and it must be said that the Hoops have been excellent at extracting value out of their top talents over the years.

Celtic's record player sales

The Scottish Premiership giants smashed their club-record sale by moving the Denmark international on for more than £25m, beating the figures that were brought in for Jota and Kieran Tierney in the past.

As you can see in the table below, the Portuguese forward and the Scotland international were both sold for a fee of £25m, which means that the club have raked in £25m or more from three separate players in their history.

The Scottish side have also sold two strikers – in Odsonne Edouard and Moussa Dembele – for more than £18m in recent years, which adds further evidence to suggest that Celtic are excellent at cashing in on their top talents, as much as the managers may not want to lose them.

Celtic know how to bring in talented young players and help them to thrive in their first-team, which puts them in the shop window for teams in Europe’s major leagues – who then swoop in to pay millions for them.

However, the Hoops do not always get it right, as no one is perfect, and there have been cases where a player has been sold on for a small fee, only for their value to skyrocket after their exit from Parkhead.

Where Are They Now

Scottish central midfielder Ryan Christie is one excellent example of this, as the left-footed star has thrived since his move away from Glasgow.

How much Celtic sold Ryan Christie for

The midfield dynamo was signed from Inverness in the summer of 2015 and spent his first two years away on loan, at Inverness for six months and Aberdeen for 18 months, to gain vital first-team experience.

Christie eventually became a first-team player for Celtic at the start of the 2018/19 campaign, under Rodgers, and produced an eye-catching 11 goals and nine assists in 38 appearances in all competitions.

The Scotland international followed that up with a staggering return of 21 goals and 16 assists in 45 outings in all competitions in the following season, as he provided a constant threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals for his side.

Christie’s last season with the Scottish giants yielded seven goals and 15 assists in 46 matches for the Hoops in the 2020/21 campaign, before his move to Bournemouth in the summer of 2021.

Celtic failed to tie him down to a new contract, with his deal running out in 2022, and sold him to the Cherries for a reported fee of just £2.5m, which has turned out to be a bargain for the English club.

Ryan Christie is now similar to a £100m Premier League star

Almost four years later, Christie has made 147 appearances for Bournemouth, who are now in the Premier League, and is similar to Newcastle United superstar Bruno Guimaraes.

The experienced ace has started 25 times in the division this term and caught the eye with 3.0 tackles and interceptions per game, along with five ‘big chances’ created for his teammates.

Per FBref, Christie and Guimaraes have been statistically similar in the Premier League over the last 365 days – both playing in central midfield in the English top-flight.

As you can see in the chart above, both players like to create chances for their teammates, whilst they are also excellent when it comes to progressing play through passes, take-ons, and carries. This illustrates how well the Scottish ace has performed, particularly when you consider that Guimaraes had a £100m release clause in his Newcastle contract last summer.

Bruno Guimaraes

It shows that the former Celtic star has performed well at Premier League level for Andoni Iraola’s side this season, because his statistics have led to comparisons to the £100m-rated Brazil international, and – as shown in the chart – he ranks highly among his peers in a host of metrics.

Christie, who was described as an “incredible lad” by former boss Gary O’Neil, may not be worth £100m to Bournemouth, but his value has soared way beyond the £2.5m that Celtic brought in for his services back in 2021.

November 2021

£7.5m

June 2023

As you can see in the table above, the 30-year-old maestro is now worth a whopping £10m, per Transfermarkt, and that is significantly more than the fee the Cherries paid for him almost four years ago.

Therefore, Celtic may regret only bringing in £2.5m for the mercurial playmaker when they opted to sell him in 2021, or they may rue that they were unable to agree a new contract to keep him at Parkhead ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, as he has gone on to become a fantastic player down south.

The Hoops will, therefore, hope to continue their trend of selling their key players for significant fees, rather than smaller sums like £2.5m, if they end up moving any of their stars on in the upcoming summer window.

Man Utd now ready to take huge £30m+ loss on star Amorim doesn’t rate

Ruben Amorim is now ready to brutally axe one member of the Manchester United squad for a massive loss this summer, according to a fresh report, as he looks to put his mark on the Red Devils.

Manchester United transfer latest

It was a relatively busy January transfer window for Manchester United, but it was largely outgoings that dominated the headlines. The Premier League giants, who currently sit 13th in the top flight, sent a trio of first team players out on loan as they looked to trim their squad and their wage bill for the second half of the campaign.

Marcus Rashford joined Aston Villa for the remainder of the season in a deal that sees the Midlands outfit pay 75% of his hefty wages, which could rise to 90% based on performances. Unai Emery’s side also have an option to buy the forward at the end of the season for £40m should he impress in claret and blue.

He could be a rogue option to help Amorim’s side in the seasons ahead.

Meanwhile, Antony’s agonising Old Trafford stay was also finally ended, with the club’s £86m signing leaving to join Real Betis on loan, and the Spanish side allegedly also paying a massive 84% of his wages during his time away from the Theatre of Dreams, with the duo’s exits saving the club significant funds.

These savings, in turn, helped the Red Devils move to sign Patrick Dorgu from Lecce, with the flying wingback arriving in a deal worth an initial £25m which could rise to £30m, a move that in turn allowed Tyrell Malacia to leave Old Trafford on loan.

But the Danish defender is just the first step in what is a major overhaul under Amorim at Old Trafford, with the club already exploring a move to sign former protegee Geovany Quenda this summer, and funds needing to be freed up to continue the job. Now, Amorim is reportedly ready to cash in on one of Erik ten Hag’s signings as he looks to find money to continue to make his mark at Manchester United.

Manchester United ready to cash in on forward

That is according to a fresh report from TEAMtalk, who point to Rasmus Hojlund as the player in question. The Dane arrived in Manchester from Atalanta with a hefty reputation as one of the most promising young strikers around, something which persuaded the Red Devils to shell out £72m (including add ons) to bring him to Old Trafford.

However, he has only shown glimpses of his potential, and has stuggled under Amorim since his arrival at the club in November, with the ex-Sporting coach opting to play midfielder Kobbie Mainoo as the no.9 in Hojlund’s place in their most recent Premier League outing.

His best form came under Erik ten Hag, when he went on a goalscoring run that drew praise from Premier League record goalscorer Alan Shearer.

“I really like him. That’s six games on the spin now scoring goals. I’ve loved his attitude, it’s been really tough for him at times but he’s stuck at it, he’s been patient and now he’s getting his rewards”, he explained after he scored twice against Luton Town.

“His second goal was instinctive, I mean his reaction. You have got a split second to think about things there. The ball has come at him with pace and then to twist your body and guide it in, it’s an incredible and very clever finish.”

However, he has struggled to find form since and now the report claims that Manchester United are willing to cash in on the Dane this summer, and will accept offers around the £40m mark, something that would mark a massive loss on their initial outlay.

It is claimed that “a new striker is a priority for Amorim in the summer” and, as a result, “there is a good chance” Hojlund could be moved on amid interest from West Ham United and Juventus in the 22-year-old. His departure could allow Manchester United to move for former Amorim pupil Viktor Gyokeres, in whom they hold a long-term interest.

Now worth more than Doku: Man City must regret losing "wonderkid" for £0

Even though it has been a tough season so far for Manchester City, they are not short of quality attacking options who could give them a real boost for the remainder of the campaign. The Citizens have spent a lot of money on their attack, and some of their star players have really stood up to the count even in a tough period

Of course, Erling Haaland leads the way when it comes to goals, with 27 in 35 appearances to his name so far this term. Summer signing Savinho has been a key source of creativity, with nine assists this term.

Another player who has had a great impact, but has struggled to become a regular starter, is Jeremy Doku.

Doku’s 2024/25 season so far

It has been a strong season for Doku at the Etihad Stadium, despite a lack of minutes. He impressed in his debut campaign, after a £55.5m move from French side Rennes, grabbing 15 goals and assists in 2023/24.

This season, he is on course to beat that. In 23 appearances this term, Doku has scored six times and grabbed seven assists. The City winger has struggled with injury at times and has been an unused substitute six times.

However, the Belgian is having a good impact on Guardiola’s side, when given the chance to play. His 13 goal involvements this term have come in 1177 minutes, the equivalent of just 13 full 90-minute games.

One of the best performances City’s number 11 put in this term came in a standout 3-0 home win against Nottingham Forest. The 22-year-old scored and assisted against the Premier League’s surprise package, in what was a key win after a poor run from City.

CIES Football Observatory believe Doku’s value has shot up since he joined City. They value him at £76.2m, showing his importance and impact when donning that famous Blue shirt, even if he has not featured too much.

As good as Doku has been for City, there is another former player who is worth even more, who the club should perhaps have kept hold of.

The Man City player worth more than Doku

One of the big mistakes that City have repeatedly made over the years is to sell, or release, some of their most exciting academy players. The best examples of this include Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, and Liam Delap. All three are now performing well in the Premier League.

Market Movers

However, perhaps the worst case of this was to allow winger Jamie Gittens to leave the club on a free transfer and join Borussia Dortmund back in 2020. The Englishman has become one of the most exciting players in Europe since.

The London-born winger has been in electric form for a Dortmund side who have struggled this season. In 34 appearances, Gittens has scored 11 goals and grabbed four assists. He began the campaign in strong fashion, with both goals in a 2-0 win at home against Eintracht Frankfurt.

The winger’s statistics on FBref in the Bundesliga this season show exactly why he has been so good. He has been sensational with the ball at his feet, averaging 4.37 successful take-ons per game, which ranks him in the top 1%, and 0.6 goal-creating actions, ranking him in the top 17%.

Given how well Gittens has played, it might not be a surprise to learn that Dortmund value him so highly. Should a summer move arise, BILD believes that the German giants will ask for £85m to sign the former City star.

That must sting City. A player who they allowed to leave for nothing, could now go for upwards of £85m in the summer, higher in value even than Doku, who has had a fantastic impact at the Etihad Stadium.

Had City kept their “wonderkid”, as Statman Dave described him, things could have turned out so differently. They could have either been in line for incredible profit or have had another exciting talent in their squad.

Tim Ward, Riley Meredith put Tasmania in control ahead of final day

New South Wales (NSW) are on the verge of their worst start to a Sheffield Shield season in 11 years after Riley Meredith’s wickets and an all-out assault from Tim Ward put Tasmania in control in Hobart.Tasmania went to stumps on day three at 2 for 176 from 24 overs in their second innings, and with a lead of 293, with Ward leading the charge with an unbeaten 90 from 71 balls. It came after NSW declared 117 runs behind on their first innings in a desperate pursuit of victory that is now looking nigh impossible. It means that NSW will need a miracle on Tuesday to avoid going winless through their first four rounds of a season for the first time since 2011-12.On a dominant day for Tasmania, Meredith claimed four wickets in his first four overs of the day to leave Blues reeling at 5 for 74 in reply to Tasmania’s first-innings 333.The paceman had Kurtis Patterson, Moises Henriques and Matthew Gilkes all out edging before lunch, while Blake Nikitaras found fine leg while trying to hook. Meredith was unlucky not to claim five, when a ball bounced off Baxter Holt’s body and hit the stumps but the bails remained in place just before tea.Jason Sangha and Sean Abbott offered the only real fightback for Blues, both scoring 53 as they put on an 86-run partnership for the sixth wicket. But when they both fell, NSW made the call to forego a shot at any meaningful first-innings bonus points and chase the six points on offer for an unlikely win by declaring after tea. It did not pay off.Tasmania’s opener Ward crunched a 32-ball half-century, regularly cutting and cover-driving NSW’s quicks to the off-side boundary. The left-hander hit five fours through the off side in one Ben Dwarshuis over, while 15 came in another off Abbott as part of an opening stand of 84 from 57 balls with Caleb Jewell.Jewell also hit 34 off 25, and when he was bowled by Sangha, Matthew Wade took over with 41 off 34. It helped Tasmania set up for a possible early declaration with a big lead on Tuesday, with a real chance of their second win of the season.
