Aston Villa show an interest in £25m deal for "very special" Euro 2024 star

After qualifying for the Champions League last season, Aston Villa are in the market to bolster their side ready for the competition. With the transfer window now in full swing, the Villans have expressed an interest in a star who has already shone on the continent.

Emery eager for Champions League ready stars

The latest news out of Villa Park centres around the revelation that Jack Grealish could be returning to Villa this summer. Recent reports point towards Manchester City being willing to let the former Villa captain leave during this window as they look to recoup a fraction of the £100 million they spent on Grealish three years ago.

Reinforcements in defence are also high on Unai Emery's wishlist as the club are reportedly linked with a move for Strahinja Pavlovic. The Serbian defender featured heavily for his nation at Euro 2024 and he could now be on his way to the West Midlands.

The higher ups at NSWE have clearly been paying close attention to this summer's championships as Villa have now expressed an interest in another player who has impressed in Germany.

Villans interested in move for Turkish talent this summer

As reported by Sport Witness, the Turkish press are claiming that Aston Villa are showing an interest in Galatasaray attacker Baris Alper Yilmaz. The 24-year-old has been linked with a host of clubs across Europe in recent weeks with Emery's men becoming the latest to express their interest in agreeing a deal.

The report claims that fellow Premier League side Manchester United are especially interested in signing the player, however the promise of Champions League football at Villa Park could be what tips the scales in the Villans' favour.

Baris Alper Yilmaz for Galatasaray.

Yilmaz is coming back off the back of an excellent showing at Euro 2024. The winger/striker played every minute of Turkey's campaign as his nation went all the way to the quarter-finals, ultimately losing 2-1 late on against the Netherlands. Whilst the 24-year-old did not register a goal at the tournament, there is no doubt that he was a key part of his side's success with his work rate up front.

Following Turkey's exit from the competition, it appears that Galatasaray's asking price for the winger has increased significantly. Sport Witness now claim that Yilmaz's current club will not accept any offers in the region of £21 million and only bids of £25 million will be enough to force negotiations.

His domestic season in 2023/24 saw Yilmaz contribute 7 goals and 12 assists as Galatasaray won the Turkish Superlig title. The 24-year-old has long been tipped for a bright future with former Turkey international Selcuk Inan singing the praises of Yilmaz: "I think Baris Alper Yılmaz can play very comfortably for many teams in the Premier League at the moment. He’s a very special player."

With Inan predicting a Premier League career in Yilmaz's future, the winger could fulfill this prophecy by making the move to Villa Park this summer.

Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips and Lockie Ferguson named in New Zealand A squads

Devon Conway will have a further chance to push his Test claims after being named in the New Zealand A squads to face West Indies A and Pakistan over the next couple of weeks.Glenn Phillips, who hit a thrilling maiden T20I hundred in the second match against West Indies, will be able to show off his long-form credentials, following his hurried Test debut against Australia in January where he struck an impressive half-century, having been included in both squads. In the second of the two New Zealand A matches, against Pakistan in Queenstown from December 10, Lockie Ferguson and Jimmy Neesham will have the opportunity for their first red-ball cricket since March although the status of that match may depend on there not being any more positive Covid-19 cases during Pakistan’s managed isolation in Christchurch.Devon Conway launches one down the ground•Getty Images

“We’re delighted to be naming such strong squads to take on West Indies A and Pakistan,” selector Gavin Larsen said. “It really does highlight the talent depth we currently have and underlines our intentions to look at a wide group of potential Test players over this NZ A season.”To have ten Blackcaps included across the two games is a testament to that depth and we know the next tier of players get a lot of out of sharing a changing room with our internationals.”To have guys in red-hot form like Glenn, Devon and Lockie is a bonus and I know they’ll be keen to prove what they can do in the longest form of the game. We’re excited to unleash Lockie with the red-ball and see what challenges his extra pace can pose to Pakistan.”Conway has started his international career with scores of 41 and 65 not out in the first two T20Is against West Indies. The midfielder, who shared a dressing room with Fernandes at Udinese, has claimed that he is still in touch with the United captain and that the Portuguese tried to convince him to move to Old Trafford. Zielinski eventually signed for reigning Italian champions Inter this summer after spending eight seasons with Napoli.

The 30-year-old also claimed that Liverpool sent him a private jet in a bid to lure him to join the Reds while Arsenal, West Ham and Barcelona were also chasing his signature. The Catalan giants were negotiating a swap deal for the player, only for Napoli chief Aurelio De Laurentiis to reject their offer.

WHAT PIOTR ZIELINSKI SAID

Speaking on the Foot Truck YouTube channel, the midfielder said, "At one time, Bruno Fernandes wanted me to end up in Manchester. We are still in touch, we talk quite often – we played together in Udinese, and in one of the matches we practically single-handedly beat Milan. As for West Ham – it was also close, De Laurentiis was also already convinced about the offer, they threw in €35 million.

"There was already looking around for medical care for my wife and child, where I was going to live. Coach [Luciano] Spalletti took me aside once and asked me what was going on, and I said I would rather stay, fight for the championship. He said I want you to stay and that it would be the best version of Zielinski. I stayed because I didn't really feel this London either."

He added, "Liverpool sent a private jet to Florence for me and I flew with my agent Bartlomiej Bolek – we drove up to [Jurgen] Klopp’s house afterwards, we had a great conversation. It was the first time I had flown like that. He said that for him I was a mix of [Ilkay] Gundogan and [Cesc] Fabregas.

"We watched a Premier League match at his place on his giant TV, I had never seen anything like that either. Arsenal were closer to realisation than Barcelona because De Laurentiis didn’t want a few boys from La Masia in return."

Tom Haines hundred leads inexperienced Sussex on solid first-day showing

Opener unbeaten on 105 after productive stands with Thomason and Rawlins

Tom Haines celebrates reaching his century•Getty Images

Tom Haines negotiated both a fiery second spell from Jamie Overton and a verbal spat with left-arm spinner Dan Moriarty to reach a superb 105 not out in Sussex’s first innings 239 for 3 against Surrey at the Kia Oval.It was the 21-year-old Haines’ second first-class hundred and he featured in century stands with both Aaron Thomason and Delray Rawlins as Sussex made an impressive start to the final round of Bob Willis Trophy fixtures after winning the toss and opting for first use of a slow-paced pitch.Rawlins made a punchy 65 from 88 balls, launching both Moriarty and Scott Borthwick’s legspin for massive straight sixes, while Thomason’s nuggety 49 in an unfamiliar opening role was another important contribution to the Sussex cause. At stumps Haines had faced 216 balls, hitting 14 fours and batting with great self-discipline throughout a day of only five hours’ playing time, because of a 12 noon start following Surrey’s floodlit Vitality Blast fixture against Middlesex on the ground the previous evening.Surrey’s bowlers had little to encourage them in the conditions, with 52 overs of spin employed by Rory Burns, but the sluggish surface did not prevent Overton, who had looked fairly innocuous in a new ball spell of 4-0-20-0 on his red-ball Surrey debut, from peppering both Haines and Rawlins in a five-over late afternoon burst that was markedly more hostile.Haines had initially been joined in a determined first-wicket stand of 102 by Thomason, who fought his way through 115 balls after being promoted to open following Phil Salt’s call-up into England’s ODI squad. But soon after Moriarty had Thomason leg-before in the 33rd over, pushing crookedly forward, Sussex also lost Harry Finch for 1 when offspinner Amar Virdi won a deserved lbw verdict during a skilful 11-over afternoon spell costing just 22 runs.Rawlins had just hit Moriarty for his first six, followed by one of his eventual six fours, when non-striker Haines and the bowler exchanged heated words and the match was held up for several minutes while Neil Bainton and Ben Debenham, the umpires, spoke to both players and Surrey captain Burns.Overton, who then replaced Moriarty for the 45th over with Sussex on 134 for 2, almost immediately hit Haines on the grille of his helmet and then Rawlins on the body as he worked up some real pace from around the wicket to the two left-handers.But Rawlins responded with a gorgeous off drive for four and Haines also pulled Overton, who has left Somerset in search of regular red-ball cricket with Surrey, to the ropes in the best passage of cricket of the day.Virdi, though, emerged as Surrey’s most successful bowler, returning after tea to have Rawlins caught by Will Jacks at short leg after a partnership with Haines of 116 in 30 overs. And it was noticeable that every Surrey player, including Moriarty, applauded Haines warmly after he finally added another ton, in his 21st first-class appearance, to the 124 he made against Durham at Arundel in 2018 in only his third match.Sussex were fielding one of the most inexperienced teams in their history, with an average age of 24 and including batsman James Coles who, at 16 years and 157 days old, became the youngest Sussex player to appear in first-class cricket.Missing from Sussex’s line-up were three senior players in opener Salt, seamer Ollie Robinson, who was unavailable, and veteran former Durham and Kent paceman Mitch Claydon, who has been suspended by the ECB on suspicion of illegally using hand sanitiser on the ball during the Willis Trophy fixture against Middlesex last month.Coles, who has emerged through Oxfordshire’s county age group system, captained the South & West in last year’s Bunbury Festival, the long-running event for the best Under-15 cricketers in the country, and won the player of the tournament award for scoring 199 runs in three innings, including one knock of 112.

Greuther Furth's Maximilian Dietz hoping for USMNT chance under Mauricio Pochettino after 2024 Olympics experience

After featuring for the U.S. Under-23s at the Olympics this past summer, Maximilian Dietz is hoping to earn a U.S. men's national team place.

Dietz hoping for USMNT chanceCurrently featuring regularly for FurthPlayed three times at Olympics this summerAFPWHAT HAPPENED?

Greuther Furth's Maximilian Dietz was a regular for the U.S. U-23s throughout the most recent cycle, earning himself a spot on the Olympic roster. In France, he played in three of the four U.S. matches, featuring in midfield after also playing as a center back during the cycle.

Like all American players, Dietz had a close eye on the U.S. men's national team coaching search this summer, which ultimately landed on Mauricio Pochettino. While he knows he's still on the outside looking in with the national team, he's excited by the potential opportunity to impress a new coach with new ideas.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesWHAT DIETZ SAID

"The new coach, for me personally, doesn't have that much of an impact mindset-wise on my work here at Furth," Dietz told a roundtable of reporters. "No matter who the coach is at the U.S. national team, you have to perform, you have to do your work at your club, you have to play consistently, and you have to play at the highest level to even get the chance. It doesn't matter who the coach is; if you don't bring that, then it's not a possibility for you to get caps.

"Not being with the [senior] national team and looking at it from kind of an outward position, it's very, very interesting, just looking at what the new coach has to say. I obviously have that goal of wanting to be part of the men's national team, so yeah, you're very curious and very, very interested in what a new coach has to say and what he wants to see from the national team players or from players that have the chance to play for the national team."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Dietz, 22, has established himself as a regular in the 2. Bundesliga with Greuther Furth making his big breakthrough during the 2023-24 season. After making four appearances the season prior with just one start, Dietz started 28 of his 30 appearances in 2023-24 and has remained in the Starting XI this 2024-25 season. The American midfielder/defender has played in five matches, starting three, after arriving back to the club late due to his 2024 Olympic run.

After the Summer Games run that saw the U.S. make it to the quarterfinals, the players involved with the U.S. U-23s will now set their sights on a potential World Cup chance. Dietz is no exception as he hopes to impress those in charge in the coming months and years.

"Unfortunately, we didn't get as far as we wanted [at the Olympics] with our goal being that we wanted to get a medal," Dietz said, "but I still feel like that we did well and that we represented the values of U.S. Soccer well."

He added, "I think, me included, every one of the guys, we're very ambitious. We want to take the next step in our careers club-wise, but also national team-wise. Obviously after the U23s, the only next step you can take is the men's national team. I think every one of us has that goal in mind but, in terms of chances, I think that's something that other people have to decide."

Arsenal ready to sell Gabriel Jesus and replace him with £43 million star

Arsenal are aiming to sell key striker Gabriel Jesus during the 2024 summer transfer window and sign a replacement for the same price, according to reports.

Arsenal transfer rumours

After missing out on the Premier League title by a narrow margin last term, Arsenal are looking to go one better in the final few weeks of this season, currently sitting top of the division ahead of Manchester City. The title is not in the Gunners' hands just yet, though, as Pep Guardiola's team have a game in hand later this month and will knock Arsenal off top spot if they win.

Whatever happens in the final few weeks of the campaign, however, it has been another season of progress for Arsenal under the guidance of Mikel Arteta. But shown by their latest Champions League quarter-final exit versus Bayern Munich, the north Londoners are still not quite at the level of Europe's elite clubs. In turn, Arteta and Edu Gaspar are no doubt eager to continue improving their squad in the upcoming transfer window.

Arsenal are believed to be considering a summer bid for Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, but one of the main areas Arsenal are seemingly targeting is centre-forward.

kalvin-phillips-bruno-guimaraes-newcastle-opinion

Arsenal are said to be showing a "strong" interest in signing Juventus' Dusan Vlahovic this summer. Elsewhere, links have emerged to the likes of Brentford hitman Ivan Toney and Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres. Said players would no doubt improve Arsenal's attacking threat in the centre of the pitch, but a fresh name is now being tipped to make a move to the Emirates.

Arsenal ready to replace Gabriel Jesus with £43 million star

According to Italian outlet Milan Live, Arsenal are ready to sell Gabriel Jesus for €50m (£43m) in the summer, and have a replacement in mind who would cost around the same sum. The player in question is Joshua Zirkzee, who currently plies his trade in Serie A with Bologna.

The report states that Milan are looking to replace an MLS-bound Oliver Giroud in the summer and consider Zirkzee as an ideal option to do so. However, Mikel Arteta wants a striker who can be more "continuous" and at the same time technically impressive, and has identified Zirkzee as a player who matches that profile.

Crucially for Arsenal, Milan Live states that the Gunners have better financial resources than Milan, so they can offer the striker a better financial package than the Italian outfit.

Bologna are in the midst of one of their best-ever Serie A campaigns, currently sitting 4th in the table. A key reason for their success this term has been the displays of 22-year-old Zirkzee. The Dutchman has found the net 11 times and provided five assists across 33 league outings in 2023/24.

Comparatively, Arsenal's Gabriel Jesus has struggled in front of goal yet again this term, scoring just four Premier League goals. if Mikel Arteta wants to take his side to the next level, it may be wise, as the aforementioned report suggests, for the Spaniard to part ways with the South American and replace him with Zirkzee.
