Christian Pulisic and AC Milan are off to the Coppa Italia final for the first time in eight years. The defeated arch-rivals Inter 3-0 in leg two of their semifinal on Wednesday, winning and advancing by an aggregate score of 4-1

Goals from striker Luka Jovic in the 36th and 50th minute, and a late dagger from midfielder Tijani Reijnders in the 85th minute secured the victory, with Milan knocking out the

Jovic's first was a beaming header, and the second was him smashing home off a corner kick, following a brief period of pinball in the box. Reijnders found the back of the net late off a counterattack, smacking home to his teammates swarming him, knowing they'd found victory.

Pulisic started the match, logging 78 minutes before he was replaced by midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek. In his time on the pitch, the American winger completed 22 of 28 pass attempts, while creating two attacking chances in the final third. He registered 41 touches on the ball and completed three defensive recoveries, as well.

Fellow U.S. teammate Yunus Musah went as an unused substitute on the bench.

Luka Jovic:

The Serbian forward, in his fourth-straight start across all competitions, scored his second and third goals across the stretch to lift Milan to glory on Wednesday. It was a fantastic strikers performance, with him capitalizing in two big moments to shine on the brightest stage.

He's had an inconsistent 2024-25 season, but this was his moment to shine – and he did exactly that.

AFPTHE BIG LOSER

The Inter defense: Torn apart on all three goals, they were exposed on both set pieces and from open play. It was a catastrophic showing from their back line, from Yann Bisseck to Stefan De Vrij to Alessandro Bastoni. The lone performer for them on the day may have been wingback Federico DiMarco, but overall, just a really poor defensive performance.

ICC puts onus on boards to make international calendar manageable

The growing, unsustainable burden on players could eventually force boards into making the global cricket calendar a more manageable one, according to ICC chairman Greg Barclay.Barclay was speaking after the conclusion of the ICC’s AGM where the Future Tours Programme (FTP) has been going through the final stages before it is published, and where a major thread of discussion among members has been around the balance in the calendar between T20 leagues and international cricket.More relevantly, he was speaking just over a week after Ben Stokes, the England Test captain, decided to retire from ODI cricket, at just 31, blaming what he said was an unsustainable workload. Stokes’ decision came 16 months out from England’s defence of their World Cup title, which he was vital in securing in 2019.Related

  • ICC FTP: Bangladesh land Test and ODI jackpot in 2023-2027 cycle

The new FTP, from 2023-2027, has not been made public yet, though ESPNcricinfo has a copy of a near-complete draft. The calendar, as it stands, is marked by an unrelenting schedule of ICC events and bilateral cricket and, increasingly, unofficial windows which are being earmarked by boards for their own T20 leagues; that is apart from a two-and-a-month window for the IPL, which is all but formalised.”The fact is that we have a limited amount of time in the calendar,” Barclay said. “There’s 365 days in a year, there’s more cricket being played through ICC events, through bilateral cricket, a proliferation of T20 leagues so there is a lot of pressure on that calendar. Are we at a tipping point?”I’m not sure but it is an issue for members to work their way through. There’s a lot of cricket to fit in there and it’s simply not all going to fit. It’s not an issue so much for this organisation [the ICC], but certainly for members to try and work their way through optimum outcomes is going to be a challenge.”What they also need to take into account is that the players themselves will simply not be able to sustain the amount of cricket they’re probably going to be expected to play so that’s going to force some changes as well.”The ICC believes it has witnessed a strong commitment to the international game among members at this AGM. But for a growing number of members that commitment is clearly tussling with a newfound zeal for their own domestic products, whether a T20 league or the Hundred. Both CA and ECB have carved out – or tried to – little windows for the BBL and the Hundred in this FTP.”There are a number of members who are putting particular attention on their domestic leagues,” Geoff Allardice, the ICC CEO said. “The one thing over the last few days is the commitment to international cricket and bilateral cricket is as strong as it has ever been. But each of them has to manage that balance between domestic competitions, their international schedules and the management of their players. Each of those boards is in a slightly different situation. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to that balancing situation and each country attacks it slightly differently.”If something does eventually give way, the speculation has been on ODI cricket. Without the context of the Super League in the next cycle, the format is back to being a bilateral staple. But that has not been evident just yet, and not in the draft version of the FTP.”We talked a fair bit about the structure,” Allardice said. “One of the things about the three formats and the way they are incorporated in the FTP is that members and fans in countries have slightly different preferences for formats. At this stage, there was some discussion about the mix of formats, not specifically ODIs in the calendar. Countries are still scheduling a healthy number of ODIs as well in their FTPs, so in the FTP you won’t see significant changes to the number of ODIs, or proportion being played.”The Super League has been scrapped because the 2027 World Cup has been expanded into a 14-team event; that has rendered a 13-team Super League redundant. The current cycle of the league has been hit by severe disruptions because of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has prevented it from really taking off. That might be rectified as we approach the end of league, with nine months still left, a number of series still to be played out and a number of big-name teams potentially having to play a qualifier to get into the 2023 World Cup.One of those could be South Africa, who did not help their own cause by pulling out of a three-match ODI series against Australia, in order to get their own T20 league off the ground. The ICC had no say in the fate of that series, and is not yet clear on how points will be awarded, but is looking forward to a tight fight for qualification towards the end.”We’ve still got nine months in the window available to complete the Super League,” Allardice said. “The ICC’s role in that competition is to say here are the eight teams you are playing against. The timing of those series and how those series are scheduled is between the two members to resolve.”We saw the announcement by CA and CSA and as we head to the end of the competition we will deal with that. Whether Australia and South Africa have come to some arrangement around making up some series – there may be some discussions still going on – the competition still has nine months to run and we’ll be dealing with [how the points are to be awarded] towards the end.”The ODI Super League was a way to provide context to ODIs. It has another nine months to play out and I’m sure as we approach cut-off date, the last couple of spots in 2023 will become quite exciting.”

Zak Crawley signs Kent contract extension

England batter’s deal had been due to expire at end of 2022 season

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Aug-2022Zak Crawley has signed a one-year contract extension at Kent, putting speculation around his future at the club on hold.Crawley is a centrally-contracted England player but his county deal was due to expire at the end of the 2022 season. With his England future in the balance after a poor run of form this summer – he has averaged 16.40 across five home Tests in 2022 – it is unclear whether he will retain his England contract, despite public backing from Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum. He publicly criticised Kent’s home pitches at the start of the year but has continued to struggle on significantly flatter ones this year: his County Championship average in 2022 is 24.25, less than half of the other members of Kent’s first-choice top three in Ben Compton and Daniel Bell-Drummond.Related

Tielemans rival: Aston Villa could re-sign star who’s a "joy to watch"

Aston Villa’s generally impressive season continues.

On Saturday, goals from Ross Barkley and then Leon Bailey saw the Villans beat Leicester City 2-1, leaving them eighth in the Premier League, thereby occupying the final potential European position.

Jhon Duran – Aston Villa

However, given the fact that Unai Emery’s team are currently fifth in the gigantic Champions League table, on course to go straight through to the round of 16, few Villa supporters are complaining.

So now, in the January transfer window, could Villa re-sign a player who was so pivotal in getting them into the Champions League in the first place?

Aston Villa's search for a midfielder

A midfield addition appears to be on the agenda for Emery and co, with journalist Graeme Bailey having reported earlier this week that Aston Villa are ‘open’ to re-signing midfielder Douglas Luiz from Juventus this month.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Bailey noted that Villa are exploring a loan deal, while the Serie A giants will only agree to such a deal if an obligation to buy is included.

The Brazilian joined la Vecchia Signora for a reported £42.5m as recently as last summer, with Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea moving in the opposite direction for a reported €22m (£18m), as the club skirted around a potential PSR breach.

Luiz was a key figure for Villa last season, with Martin Laurence on Twitter calling his performances “outstanding”, while Jermaine Pennant told talkSPORT he believed the Brazilian to be better than Declan Rice, stating “I think he can do everything that Rice can do and better”.

However, as noted by Adam Digby of Forbes, Luiz’s time at Juventus has gone disastrously, with the front page of Gazzetta dello Sport labelling him ‘a flop’ as early as October.

His most high-profile mishap came in the Champions League, giving away a penalty for handball against RB Leipzig, mere seconds after being introduced as a substitute, saved further scrutiny by the fact that Francisco Conceição scored late on to snatch a 3-2 victory for ten-man I Bianconeri in Saxony.

Overall, Luiz has seen a miserly 354 minutes of action for Thiago Motta’s team, starting just two matches, hence why Juventus are open to selling him, with Nottingham Forest amongst those also interested in a move.

How Douglas Luiz's return would help Aston Villa

As alluded to earlier, Luiz was one of Aston Villa’s most pivotal players last season, racking up 4,353 minutes across all competitions, the second-most of any player in the squad, a mere 18 minutes fewer than Ezri Konsa.

On top of that, as noted by Sofascore, the Brazilian was awarded the second-highest average rating of any Villa player in the Premier League throughout the 2023/24 season (7.27), behind only top-scorer Ollie Watkins (7.32).

Thus, it’s clear that Luiz would certainly be an asset, if the Villans are able to bring him back, but how does he compare to Youri Tielemans, the current occupant of the deep-lying midfield position, usually deployed alongside either Boubacar Kamara or Amadou Onana?

As shown by the data, since the start of last season, Luiz – who’s previously been hailed as an “absolute joy to watch” by journalist Gregg Evans – and Tielemans are remarkably similar for a wide variety of metrics.

The Brazilian has scored one more goal, despite having yet to get off the mark for Juventus, while he attempted more passes, registered more touches and completed a higher % of passes, even though he has played almost exactly 1,000 minutes fewer during this time-frame, largely as a result of his inactivity since moving to the Serie A side.

Meantime, the Belgian, somewhat surprisingly, accumulated more tackles and interceptions, which may be contrary to general perception, but, without doubt, Luiz would certainly help Villa’s ambitions across all three competitions, if they’re able to bring him back to the Midlands.

Haseeb Hameed does his best to impress as Notts make Middlesex toil

First century of season begins post-Ashes fightback as Afridi’s absence dents table-toppers

Matt Roller12-May-2022Eoin Morgan’s position as the most powerful man in English cricket was further reinforced on Thursday with confirmation that Rob Key’s has decided to appoint Brendon McCullum as the new coach of the men’s Test team.McCullum was the inspiration for England’s white-ball revolution, master of ceremonies at Morgan’s wedding and his coach when he captained KKR to the IPL final last year; they share passions for red wine, horse racing and gambling and while Morgan is not directly involved in the Test side, the influence he has had on English cricket will be clear throughout the Ben Stokes-McCullum era.So it was fitting that on the day McCullum’s appointment was ratified and confirmed publicly, Morgan was back at Lord’s – supposedly for a gym session, though he was seen in conversation with Stuart Broad pre-match and later on the Middlesex balcony catching up with team-mates with the start of the T20 Blast two weeks away.Morgan’s presence meant this was a chance for Nottinghamshire’s batters to make an impression. When Haseeb Hameed threw his head back and raised his bat after clipping Tim Murtagh’s first ball after tea off his pads for four to reach a first hundred of the season, he could feel confident that he had done so.Hameed’s first seven innings of the season had brought a solitary half-century, with several starts but an average of 26.83. His first-innings dismissal against Glamorgan last month appeared to confirm that luck had deserted him: he was run out at the non-striker’s end when James Weighell deflected Ben Slater’s straight drive into the stumps via his boot, sticking out a hopeful left leg as he slid over in his follow-through. This, then, was a welcome return to form at a ground where he made the final hundred of his Lancashire career three years ago.It was not a faultless innings: he played uncharacteristically aggressively early on – perhaps subconsciously changing his method after reading reports of McCullum’s impending appointment – and survived some awkward flirts in the off-stump channel. But his 112 set the game up for Notts against the early pace-setters in Division Two after they had been asked to bat first, reinforcing their well-founded belief that they are the best side outside of the top flight this year. He was well supported by Steven Mullaney, the club captain and one of the more reliable middle-order batters on the circuit, who targeted the short boundary towards the Grand Stand to good effect in his 91 not out.Hameed told ESPNcricinfo in a pre-season interview that he thinks finding a way to “get back up from rock bottom” has been a strength throughout his young career and after a gruelling Ashes tour he needed to do so once again.Eoin Morgan watches on from the Middlesex balcony•Alex Davidson/Getty Images”It was just a case of trying to keep things simple,” Hameed said of his innings. “I felt like if I continued playing the way I was there would be a big score around the corner. I just had to keep that belief and thankfully I was able to get a decent one on the board today.”The pitch was a little on the slow side but there were a number of play-and-misses throughout the day and a lot of the dismissals were genuine nick-offs, even with an older ball at times like mine. I feel like there’s enough in there for us to take 20 wickets.”Hameed is, at best, an outside bet to play in the first Test of McCullum era, against New Zealand at this ground in three weeks’ time, and was keen to avoid the question of a recall. “I saw there was a decent chance he’d be made coach,” he said. “I know Broady was pretty excited about that appointment but honestly, there hasn’t been too much chat about it. I’m not even looking that far: for me, it’s always been important to keep things very short-term and very simple. That hasn’t changed.”Perhaps the day’s most intriguing innings came from Ben Duckett, who edged Ethan Bamber behind shortly after lunch for 42. He was handed an early life on 4 when Peter Handscomb put down a straightforward chance at first slip off Murtagh, but played brightly, driving confidently through extra cover and working through midwicket off his pads.Duckett is among a number of batters who could fill England’s vacancy at No. 3 and his unshackled approach in first-class cricket – his strike rate this season, 65.42, reflects a calculation that attack is the best option on seam-friendly Trent Bridge pitches – is in sync with McCullum’s preference for positivity. If he misses out on a Test recall, Morgan may well take a look at him in June’s ODI series in the Netherlands.Middlesex were unable to call on their star overseas signing Shaheen Shah Afridi, who has returned home to Pakistan to “rest and spend time with family and friends” before an ODI series against West Indies in a month’s time. He is due to return for the back end of the Blast’s group stages and Middlesex have plenty of fast-bowling depth but his absence is clearly a blow – as it would be to any team in the world. With the notable exception of Toby Roland-Jones, their seamers struggled to keep the scoring rate in check though Bamber, Murtagh and Martin Andersson all threatened at times. But it has been their batting that has been the major point of improvement this season: an attack of Broad, Luke Fletcher and a well-rested James Pattinson will offer a test of their progress at some stage on Friday.

Russell's 70 off 31 helps Knight Riders brush aside Kings

Two of the most exciting sides in this IPL threw punch after punch at each other, but in the end Punjab Kings backed off slightly against Kolkata Knight Riders, and paid a big price.Kings played the game Knight Riders did two nights ago in an attempt to provide for the inevitable dew and chasing advantage: just keep going hard and refuse to rebuild until that is the last option left. It is a shame that just like for Knight Riders, it didn’t work out for Kings. They were bowled out for 137 with 10 balls to spare, a total Knight Riders chased down in 14.3 overs despite being 51 for 4.Right from their team selection, Knight Riders kept picking the aggressive option. They replaced a wicketkeeper-batter with a specialist bowler, went for wickets every time Kings threatened to run away, bowled out their four main bowlers in the first 17 to try to bowl Kings out, and then, at 51 for 4, a Andre Russell saw them through with 70 off 31.Crash, bang, wallopOf the eight sixes that he hit, Russell said he nailed only one; that’s how difficult it was going to be to defend if Kings had put on a par score. And with the build-up of their side, they were not going to go for a par score. Mayank Agarwal got himself out playing across the line in the first over. Bhanuka Rajapaksa responded with some sweet aerial clips on the leg side in a nine-ball 31, but the suffering bowler Shivam Mavi got him with an aggressive short ball. Tim Southee then got the better of Shikhar Dhawan, who had just started to hit out, with an offcutter. Kings 62 for 3 in 5.5 overs.Chakravarthy, Narine apply brakesThese three overs might not get spoken about a lot, but Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine combined to bowl overs five, six and eight without a single boundary, conceding just 16 runs. In the middle was Liam Livingstone. It was all building up to something.Umesh’s hurrahShreyas didn’t try to sneak in a cheap over here. He went right back to Umesh Yadav, the joint-leading wicket-taker in the IPL at that point. Umesh produced the wicket of Livingstone, refusing to give him a length full enough to loft. Narine then got the better of Raj Bawa. At 85 for 5 in the 10th over, Kings made their first defensive move, holding back Odean Smith for later.Umesh Yadav got KKR going with quick strikes•BCCI

Chakravarthy and Narine, though, tightened the screws with two tight overs. Denied strike and runs, Shahrukh Khan jumped at the first ball of a new Southee over, and ended up top-edging a skier. Shreyas went to Umesh again, and he took out Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar to make it 102 for 8 in the 15th over.Rabada’s debutShreyas now thought he could perhaps get away with not having to go back to Mavi. He bowled Chakravarthy’s last in the 16th and Southee’s in the 17th. Rabada, who couldn’t lay bat on Chakravarthy, enjoyed the pace Southee provided to take 16 runs off his over. And when Mavi travelled, too, it seemed Shreyas might have to pay for his aggression.Russell, though, ended the innings in two balls in the 19th over.Crash, bang, wallop, part 2Ajinkya Rahane hit two fours in the first over. Out in the next. Venkatesh Iyer tried to blast one through cover-point. Caught. Shreyas ran away to 26 off 11, but tried to burst through his poor match-up against Chahar, and was caught off the slog sweep to make it three dismissals in 15 balls against the legspinner. Chahar then produced a beauty to have Nitish Rana lbw.The Russell showNot often does Russell get to bat inside the first 10 overs. He says his ideal entry point is around the 15th over when around five overs are left in the innings. So one way to make an eighth-over entry ideal was to end the game in 13.However, the way Russell played Chahar, it didn’t look like he was in any hurry. Two overs of Russell at the wicket, and not a single boundary scored or tried. It was getting uneasy. This is where Shreyas went for his wicket-takers in the first innings. Agarwal gave Harpreet’s slow left-arm another over. It was too much respect to ask of Russell. He took two sixes over the bigger boundary in that over before going ahead and playing out Chahar’s next.Agarwal had no choice but to go to one of the quicker bowlers in the 12th, and he chose Smith over Rabada. Russell took his fellow Jamaican apart in the 30-run over, dismantling his round-the-wicket plan. Sam Billings, who played a calm hand, cashed in a free hit last ball of the over.Russell still showed no ego, and proceeded to play out Chahar’s final over even when the asking rate was under four an over. He then took Knight Riders home in the 15th over with successive sixes off Livingstone. Almost the ideal entry point then.

Farke can drop Aaronson by unleashing Leeds "livewire" in new position

Leeds United dropped all the way down to fourth in the Championship table after the three teams above of them played their matches on Tuesday night.

The Whites were top of the division heading into this round of matches and now know that they need maximum points from their game against Luton Town to move back into first place.

Daniel Farke’s side are preparing to welcome the Hatters to Elland Road this evening and nothing but a victory will put them back to the top of the league, although a draw would still have them in the automatic promotion places in second.

The German head coach will have dissected the dramatic 4-3 win over Swansea in Wales on Sunday last time out and looked at ways his team can improve, after they shipped three goals.

Leeds found themselves 2-1 down at half-time in that match and then conceded in the 90th minute to make it 3-3 after they had turned the game around in the second-half.

Thankfully, substitute Wilfried Gnonto was on hand to score the winning goal in the 91st minute, just after the hosts had equalised, with a close-range finish.

Leeds United's top performers against Swansea

There were a number of impressive performers on the pitch for the Whites from an attacking perspective in the win over the Welsh outfit last weekend.

Back at his former club, Wales international Dan James was electric down the right flank. The high line from Swansea provided him with plenty of opportunities to open his legs and burst down the wing, which allowed him to assist two goals and provide the cross that Ben Cabango scored an own goal from.

On the other flank, Manor Solomon was selected to start and made the most of his opportunity. The Tottenham Hotspur loanee scored two of the opening three goals with close-range finishes from James and Sam Byram’s crosses.

As you can see in the table above, the two Leeds wide players were fantastic on Sunday as they provided a big threat, as scorers and creators, between them and kept the opposition defence guessing with their movement.

This shows that they both deserve to remain in the starting XI for this clash with Luton, in order to, hopefully, use their confidence to make a significant impact again.

However, there was one player who struggled as part of the attacking set-up and should now be dropped to the bench by Farke, and that is USA international Brenden Aaronson.

Brenden Aaronson's performance against Swansea in numbers

The former Union Berlin loanee returned to Elland Road in the summer and has worked hard to redeem himself and emerge as a key player for the German boss, with 14 starts out of 16 Championship appearances this season.

However, it could be time to drop him down to the bench after his disappointing showing against Swansea on Sunday, which was his third game in succession without a goal or an assist to show for his effort.

Aaronson played the full 90 minutes against the Swans but failed to register a single shot on goal and did not create a ‘big chance’ for his teammates, with just one key pass in total. He also completed 79% of his attempted passes and lost possession 14 times, whilst failing to make an impact in the final third.

As you can see in the table above, the Leeds number 11 has not enjoyed the best of times of late, with struggles in and out of possession in his last three league appearances for the club.

In those three games, he has won just 17 of his 46 duels and failed to create a single ‘big chance’ for his teammates, with zero goals and assists.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Farke must, now, brutally ditch the American lightweight from the starting XI tonight in favour of unleashing Wilfried Gnonto in a new role this season.

Why Wilfried Gnonto should be unleashed

So far in the 2024/25 campaign, all 16 of the forward’s appearances for the West Yorkshire outfit have come on either the left wing or the right wing.

James and Solomon’s respective performances against Swansea suggest that there is currently not a space for him in his two favoured positions out wide, which is why Farke must consider unleashing the Italy U21 international in a number ten position behind Joel Piroe or Mateo Joseph.

Gnonto has played 63 matches as a second striker or an attacking midfielder in his career, but only three of those have been in the first-team for Leeds.

The former Inter prospect, who was once described as an “absolute livewire” by pundit Micah Richards, has the physicality and close control to play in a central position, winning 46% of his duels and completing 1.4 dribbles per game this season.

As you can see in the table above, Gnonto has produced 11 goals and ‘big chances’ created combined in 16 appearances in the Championship so far this season, which shows that he can make a difference in the final third as both a scorer and a creator.

Of course, those goals and assists came from a starting position out wide but he often finds himself in central areas, as was the case for the winning goal at Swansea, and that suggests that he has the potential to thrive as a number ten.

Therefore, Farke could brutally ditch the underperforming Aaronson from the team and keep Solomon and James out wide by unleashing Gnonto in a new role this evening against Luton.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Bellingham was shown a straight red card in the 39th minute after protesting against officiating decisions that went against Real Madrid. He was visibly frustrated and approached the referee, gesturing toward different areas of the field while questioning the decisions. According to footage from Spanish broadcaster Movistar, Munuera Montero instructed Bellingham to speak with respect.

"I am speaking to you with respect," Bellingham responded, before appearing to say "f*ck you" as he turned away. The referee immediately ran over and produced a red card, sending the midfielder off.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bellingham’s controversial sending-off only added to Real Madrid’s growing frustration with refereeing decisions in recent weeks. The club had already expressed dissatisfaction with officiating in previous matches, particularly in games against Espanyol and Atletico Madrid, where questionable calls saw them drop valuable points in the title race to Barcelona.

  • WHAT THE CTA SAID

The Technical Committee of Referees (CTA), under the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), issued a statement strongly condemning the online abuse and threats directed at Montero and his family following the match.

It read: "The professional referees wish to express our absolute rejection of the attacks and threats that our colleague José Luis Munuera Montero is receiving through social media, which affect him personally as well as his family environment.

"These attacks add to the hate and verbal violence with which we have to perform our professional work every weekend and which in the grassroots categories often turns into, even more regrettably, physical violence in many more cases."

Bellingham’s red card is not the first time a player has been dismissed for dissent toward a referee in Spanish football. Back in October 2019, former Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele received a red card for telling referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz: “You’re very bad.” Even then, Lionel Messi tried to defend his team-mate, arguing that Dembele’s Spanish was limited and that he did not fully understand what he was saying. Despite this, the French winger was handed a two-match suspension, which remained unchanged even after Barcelona’s appeal.
