Rain ruins Christchurch opener after Curran claws England to 153

New Zealand thrive on green-tinged pitch before the weather has the final say

England 153 for 6 (Curran 49*, Bracewell 1-10) vs New Zealand – match abandonedIt turns out there’s a reason New Zealand don’t often host international cricket in October. A truly glorious sunset over Christchurch gave way to dankness and mizzle after dark, as persistent rain wrecked a well-poised contest at Hagley Oval and sent a capacity crowd home unfulfilled. The home fans could at least be content that their own players had had the better of the 20 overs that were possible. New Zealand’s six bowlers claimed a wicket apiece, as England’s aggressive batters struggled to cope with the early-season movement of a green-tinged pitch.Only Sam Curran, with a gritty if fortunate 49 not out from 35 balls, resisted for any length of time. His 19-run take-down of Jacob Duffy’s final over hoisted England past the venue’s par score of 150, to set up what should have been a compelling fight to the finish. That will now have to wait until these teams reconvene at the same place on Monday.Runs at a premiumBoth captains had been eager to get first use of the conditions, and sure enough, the die was cast for an uncomfortable evening for batters when Phil Salt – usually England’s banker for a flying start – fell in the second over for 3, caught at short third off Jacob Duffy having failed to middle any of his four deliveries. That brought Jacob Bethell to the middle at No. 3, to begin his long and public audition for a similar role in the Ashes. Suffice to say, he didn’t quite enhance his claims on this showing. Three air-shots in five dot-balls gave way to back-to-back boundaries, including a firm swipe for six down the ground. But then he climbed across Matt Henry’s short ball, and top-edged a steepler back to the bowler for 15 from 13.England emerged from the Powerplay with some impetus at 44 for 2, thanks to Jos Buttler’s old-school nous and eye for a scoring opportunity. But, having reached 18 from his first ten balls, he lost momentum along with the strike, adding just five more from his last nine, which were stretched across five fallow mid-innings overs.Initially this didn’t seem to matter, with Harry Brook greeting Jimmy Neesham’s seamers with two sixes in his first three balls. But Neesham hit back with a cutter that flicked off the captain’s pads to bowl him for 20 from 14, whereupon Tom Banton struggled to get started in his unfamiliar mid-innings role.He made it to 9 from eight balls at the ten-over drinks break, then slapped his first ball of the resumption to long-on, as Mitchell Santner got his reward for a typically unrelenting spell. When Buttler followed one over later, caught at mid-off as he too failed to hit the spin of Michael Bracewell off his length, England were in peril at 81 for 5.Jacob Duffy struck early to remove Phil Salt•Joe Allison/Getty Images

Curran the cat claws a totalJordan Cox and Sam Curran were integral to Oval Invincibles’ latest Hundred triumph, but usually through front-footed onslaughts from No. 3 and 4 respectively. This rearguard from No. 6 and 7 required rather different skillsets – and, as it turned out, a fair dollop of luck.A timely rain-break in the 17th over offered England a chance to regroup, which Cox seemed to seize when he slapped Kyle Jamieson’s first ball of the resumption through the covers for four. But Jamieson hit back immediately, getting a length ball to stick in the pitch as Cox’s timing deserted him. Notwithstanding his fifty against Ireland in his previous outing, this 16 from 18 marked another missed opportunity for a player who – for a variety of reasons – can’t quite grasp his chances in the England set-up.Curran has also been on the outside looking in since Brendon McCullum took over as head coach, but his time would appear to have come, and even the fates seem to agree. Invaluable though his innings was, he was the beneficiary of two badly dropped catches – on 14, as Duffy spilled a steepler in his followthrough, and on 26, as Tim Robinson misjudged a pull to deep midwicket off Henry. He had a further life five balls later, when Jamieson pinned him on the knee-roll as he lined up a ramp. A speculative review showed it had pitched outside leg, by which stage he was already most of the way off the pitch. But he did the needful as the overs ran out, scampering the twos as New Zealand set their men back in the deep, before a final-over six and two fours hauled England to a total that might well have proved sufficient had the weather permitted a defence. On that, however, we’ll never know.

Arne Slot's in trouble! Liverpool boss told defeat to Nottingham Forest 'would make things tricky' – but Jurgen Klopp return ruled out

Arne Slot has been warned that a defeat to Nottingham Forest "would make things tricky" for him at the Liverpool dugout, but a potential return for Jurgen Klopp has been ruled out. The reigning Premier League champions, who only weeks ago appeared to have rediscovered their rhythm with statement victories over Aston Villa and Real Madrid, were humbled at the Etihad in Pep Guardiola’s 1,000th match in management.

Liverpool’s crisis deepens after Etihad setback

Liverpool offered little resistance in a 3-0 defeat marked by Erling Haaland’s opener, scored moments after he missed a penalty, followed by long-range strikes from Nico Gonzalez and Jeremy Doku. Virgil van Dijk did have the ball in the net at 1-0, but the goal was controversially ruled out after VAR determined Andy Robertson, who was offside, had made an "obvious action" that impacted play. Liverpool failed to register a shot on target until the 75th minute. Slot, meanwhile, endured chants of "sacked in the morning" from City supporters as his team slumped to a seventh defeat in ten matches across all competitions. After 11 league games, Liverpool sit eighth, eight points behind leaders Arsenal.

AdvertisementAFPForest encounter critical to Slot's future

Former Everton, Sunderland and Scotland midfielder Don Hutchison has warned that Slot will be under pressure if Liverpool further drop points against Forest.

In an interview with Slot said: "I think a defeat against Forest would make things a little bit tricky, to be fair, for Slot. You can't sugarcoat it. They've got a run of games now, Liverpool, where they play a good amount of teams in the bottom half. So this is the period where you can put a run of wins together, and if you do, you get Liverpool back into the top two or three. If they don't then he starts to become a man under pressure, because it's time now to have the plan and to show everyone the plan, about how you get all your big boys into the same team."

He added that Liverpool’s issues are no longer just form-related, but structural.

"We're all trying to guess on what system and what permutation and what individuals you go for," he said. "Slot is a very good manager and he's got to solve it. So to answer your question he would be under pressure, but I'm still pretty confident in him."

Klopp's return not on the cards

With pressure building, bookmakers have inevitably drifted towards familiar names. Leading the speculative odds at 4/1 is the man Slot replaced, Jurgen Klopp. But Hutchinson has been quick to dismiss the idea.

"No, I don't see it. I think Jurgen's got more about him," he said. "I even think if that was the conversation, I think Jurgen would say to Liverpool to be patient on Slot, to give the guy time. I think Jurgen's that type of guy where it's not all about him. Jurgen's very honest.  He wants to do what's best for himself and Liverpool for sure. So he would probably say to the board, stay patient, stay with Arne Slot. There's no one out there at the minute from the list of managers that would be available who would make it worth firing Slot."

GettyMixed injury news as Forest clash nears

Slot confirmed a blend of encouraging and worrying updates ahead of Saturday’s clash with Forest. Alisson Becker is fully fit after recovering from a hamstring injury and is expected to return in goal. However, Conor Bradley and Florian Wirtz have both suffered muscle injuries since returning from international duty. Bradley is expected to miss around three weeks, while Wirtz’s absence should be shorter, but he remains unavailable. Jeremie Frimpong is still out with a hamstring problem, leaving Liverpool thin at right-back.

Speaking on Wirtz and Bradley's injury situations, Slot said: "Both muscle issues. I don't expect Conor to be part of the next 22 days. Maybe he returns towards the end of that period unless a miracle happens. Florian should be back sooner, it depends how things go but it should not be too long.

"Jeremie is out for a similar timeframe and probably will not be available for the next two or three weeks either. It will be interesting to see who plays at right back. Curtis Jones filled in there last season and Joe Gomez has played there as well, but he has only completed 90 minutes in 2025, so asking to play seven times in 22 days is a risk."

However, Alexander Isak is fit again after a stop-start beginning to life at Anfield following his club-record transfer from Newcastle.

Not just Paqueta: West Ham dud is already becoming a huge issue under Nuno

After last night’s disaster, West Ham United fans probably wish the international break had never come to an end.

Nuno Espírito Santo took charge of his first home Premier League match against Brentford, and to say the Hammers let him down would be a colossal understatement.

It was one of the most disappointing, lethargic and worrying performances from the East Londoners for some time, one worthy of a side heading for the drop.

There were shocking displays all over the pitch from the hosts, with Lucas Paqueta and another starter now becoming a genuine concern.

West Ham's growing Paqueta problem

So it should almost go without saying that, when he’s on song, Paqueta has the ability to be one of the best creative midfielders in the Premier League.

After all, there was a point in time when he looked set for a move to Manchester City, and then over the summer, fans were delighted when a potential move to Aston Villa didn’t happen.

However, the unfortunate reality is that the Irons faithful have not seen the mercurial Brazilian anywhere near his best for quite some time now.

For example, in 36 appearances across all competitions last season, totalling 2536 minutes, the former Lyon star scored just five goals, which is an average of one every 7.2 games, or every 507.2 minutes.

There were signs of him potentially recovering his form earlier this season when he had three goals to his name by transfer deadline day. Still, since then, he has failed to score or assist a goal, and his overall performances have taken a nosedive.

Monday night was probably his worst display so far, and while he was played out of position to replace the injured Niclas Füllkrug, he still needed to offer more than he did.

For example, in 94 minutes of inaction, he amassed a combined expected goal and assist figure of just 0.12, took a single shot, which wasn’t on target, took 61 touches but failed to complete a single dribble, lost the ball 23 times, misplaced 100% of his crosses and more.

In short, it was a total horror show of a performance from Paqueta and yet more reason for fans to worry about his form, which could be said about another starter.

The West Ham star becoming a problem under Nuno

The unfortunate reality of the matter is that, at this point in time, you could make the case for a handful of West Ham players being a problem for Nuno.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The likes of Kyle Walker-Peters and Oliver Scarles, for example, had to come off at half-time on Monday, and Guido Rodriguez looked lost when he came on.

However, a player who is even more of a concern than they are at this moment is Max Kilman.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers star joined the Hammers for around £40m last summer, and while there have been moments in which he has justified that price, there have not been any this season.

Moreover, in the three games since the new manager has come in, the Englishman has been a hindrance to the side, and it’s hard to see when that might stop being the case.

For example, against the Bees, he looked a mess, unsure of when to close down on players and then, for the opener, he just sort of sticks a leg out in an attempt to get the ball off Kevin Schade.

He also fails to intercept the cutback for the second one, lending credence to one content creator who described his performance as “diabolical.”

Finally, Nuno can’t even really take him out of the team for the next game, as Konstantinos Mavropanos went off with an injury late on.

Ultimately, while almost every West Ham player was poor on Monday night, Kilman’s form is starting to become a big issue.

Nuno suggests West Ham could be about to rely on "very aggressive" young star

The Hammers boss clearly loves what he can offer.

B Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh have been picked in India’s Test squad for the first time, while Karun Nair and Shardul Thakur have made comebacks for the five-match series in England that starts on June 20.The 18-man squad is led by 25-year old Shubman Gill, who was appointed India’s new Test captain by the selection panel headed by Ajit Agarkar at a meeting in Mumbai on Saturday. Agarkar said Jasprit Bumrah, who was India’s vice-captain on the recent tour of Australia, was unlikely to play all five Tests in England due to workload management and that was a factor in him not being given the captaincy.Gill succeeded Rohit Sharma, who retired from the format in May following poor returns over the past season, especially during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Best Deadline Day deal since Kulusevski: Spurs make approach for £17m star

Tottenham Hotspur are very much active as the summer transfer window winds down. Clubs all over Europe are scrambling to wrap up a variety of deals, and Thomas Frank’s side are eager to add some creative quality to their side.

For James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski are sidelined, the former for most of the campaign and Kulusevski for an indeterminate period, sidelined for several months already.

Xavi Simons has been signed from RB Leipzig to temper such blows, but more might be needed, hence why they’ve agreed a deal to bring Randal Kolo-Muani to north London.

However, Frank isn’t only limited to the number ten position or forward areas, actually keen on signing a ball-playing defender before the end of the day too.

Spurs open talks for new signing

According to Caught Offside, Tottenham are interested in signing Inter Milan defender Benjamin Pavard before the looming closure of the transfer window, having opened talks with the Serie A giants.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The 29-year-old also has attracted attention from Manchester United and Marseille, but Spurs have the most advanced interest at this stage, having made initial contact already.

The France international is understood to be open to moving to the Premier League by the end of the day, and Inter would consider cashing in, should their €20m (£17m) price tag be met.

Why Spurs want Pavard

Pavard is an accomplished defender with a wide range of qualities that allow him to play both in central defence and out wide, at right-back.

Benjamin Pavard in action for Inter Milan.

He would add depth and dynamism to Frank’s outfit, and given that he ranks among the top 18% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues for pass completion, the top 16% for progressive passes and the top 16% for through balls per 90, would add much fluency to Tottenham’s build-up play.

Once hailed by then Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel for his “underrated” qualities within teams challenging at the top, Pavard could certainly prove to be Tottenham’s best deadline-day deal since landing Kulusevski from Juventus in January 2022, especially when considering Levy would be keeping the Serie A connection alive with this one too.

Kulusevski has been a wonderful player for Tottenham, immense in Ange Postecoglou’s system last year despite the issues the club were beset with.

Pavard might be at a different stage of his career, but there’s no question that he would solidify Tottenham’s backline while adding some creative impetus to the ranks too.

It would be a fallacy to believe that Tottenham’s playmaking potential would be unlocked solely through the signing of attacking midfielders.

It’s a team sport, after all, and players such as Pavard would feed through the lines while protecting the goalmouth too.

Kulusevski has proved a bona fide success in London, and the same could be true for an experienced star like Pavard.

West Ham hold active interest in "elite" £17m Spain international, talks held

West Ham United now hold “concrete interest” in signing an “elite” midfielder alongside their deal for Southampton star Mateus Fernandes, and talks have already been held over a deal which could amount to £17m.

West Ham eyeing several new signings after poor start

West Ham have made a very disappointing start to the new Premier League campaign, suffering consecutive defeats, and the trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the EFL Cup didn’t offer any respite, crashing out in a 3-2 defeat after conceding two late goals.

There have been suggestions that Graham Potter’s job could be on the line, as a result of the extremely poor results, and the manager is now frantically trying to improve his squad before the September 1st transfer deadline.

Amid doubts over Lucas Paqueta’s future, the Hammers are looking to bolster their attacking options, with a number of targets on the shortlist and a deal for Fernandes now agreed, with the Hammers set to pay roughly £38m for the Portuguese’s signature.

Strengthening in central midfield is clearly still a priority, with a deal for Soungoutou Magassa also believed to be close to completion, and the AS Monaco maestro is not the only option on the shortlist.

Indeed, according to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg on X, West Ham now hold “concrete interest” in signing Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Aleix Garcia, and direct talks have already been held with the German club.

Bayer Leverkusen'sAleixGarciacelebrates scoring their fourth goal with Nathan Tella

Figures have been discussed, and although a formal offer is yet to be made, a deal could be possible for the relatively affordable fee, with Leverkusen looking to hold out for around €20m (£17m).

"Elite" Garcia could excel at the London Stadium

Football scout Ben Mattinson was left enamoured by the Spanish midfielder during the 2023-24 season, at which point he was said to be one of the best in his position in the world, with the former Girona man’s passing ability dubbed “elite”.

Primarily a deep-lying midfielder, the Leverkusen maestro is also very capable of contributing on the front foot, picking up seven goal contributions in 28 Bundesliga appearances in the 2024-25 campaign.

With Tottenham Hotspur recently opening talks over a deal for Paqueta, Potter may need to bring in a new playmaker, and Garcia certainly has what it takes to succeed at the London Stadium.

That said, having already lost Mohammed Kudus to their London rivals this summer, it is vital the Hammers keep hold of Paqueta in the final days of the transfer window, given that the Brazilian is one of the only players who can hold his head high so far this season, scoring two goals.

England captain says keeper’s new role gives him chance to “really impact the game” against Australia

Knight questions idea of Root, Buttler coming down the order

When the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore was rebuilt over the past few months at breakneck speed, the PCB may have envisioned it opening with cricket’s most ferociously rivalry, but cricket’s oldest rivalry will have to do instead. With Pakistan not guaranteed a game at this venue at all, there was no other game here with greater demand for tickets than England vs Australia, where the winners of the last two ODI World Cups kick off their Champions Trophy campaigns. This, however, is not going to be a battle of two current white-ball titans. Neither side starts off this tournament a picture of ODI health, and it is how they address – or, more pertinently, conceal – their weaknesses that may be most consequential to the outcome. England have lost 16 of their last 23 ODIs in a run stretching back to the 2023 World Cup, while Australia have come up second best in six of the last eight games. They are further hampered by injuries and high-profile withdrawals: none of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Marsh or Marcus Stoinis are part of Australia’s squad. After something of a horror ODI series against India, England’s most significant tactical move may be something of a defensive ploy masquerading as aggression. Announcing their starting XI two days out from the game, they revealed wicketkeeper Jamie Smith will bat at No. 3 for the first time in his international career.”We just feel it’s a nice position to give him a free hit to try and really impact the game, make that that top three really dynamic,” Jos Buttler, England’s captain, said. “Jamie’s someone with incredible talent and taken to international cricket so well that we feel he’s got the game there and can place him in that position to try and have a really big impact with a number of guys behind him.”Related

How to be successful in the Champions Trophy? Look to the middle overs

It’s the closing bit of that statement, perhaps, that unearths a more rounded reason for what, if England’s recent history is anything to go by, is an on-brand punt. Against India, England’s more established middle order was especially vulnerable to collapses against India’s spinners in the middle overs. While a calf injury ruled Smith out of that series, his ability against spin in Pakistan was best showcased in the longest format. October’s third Test in Rawalpindi was over on the third morning on an excessively spin-friendly wicket; Pakistan did not bowl a ball of seam and all 20 England wickets fell to the spinners. But with England on the ropes at 118 for 6, it was Smith who launched a remarkable counter-attack, hitting five fours and six sixes in a 119-ball 89 to allow England to rack up 267. It included an astonishing takedown of Pakistan’s premier offspinner Sajid Khan, scoring 61 runs at a run a ball against him without giving away his wicket.England’s batting reshuffle will see Smith (right) at No. 3 with Root at No. 4•Matthew Lewis-ICC/ICC via Getty Images

“He’s obviously got the game technically and tactically, but I think the head on his shoulders seems to be one of the biggest strengths,” Buttler said. “Nothing seems to faze him too much: I think you could ask him to bat anywhere in the line-up and it wouldn’t faze him. We feel it gives him a nice position to try and really impact the game, make some big runs, and put some pressure on the opposition.”It means Joe Root, Harry Brook and Buttler himself slot down the order, spreading England’s quality through the middle overs and – theoretically at least – inoculating against the sort of collapses that characterised their white-ball tour of India. The cynical view would term this a rearranging of the deckchairs in the absence of more wholesale changes, but on these wickets against the arguably less challenging task of negotiating Australia’s spinners, Buttler had reason for guarded optimism.”I think the conditions will be different here [to what] they were in India,” he said. “Everywhere you go around the world has its own nuances and different conditions. We’ve got lots of guys who’ve played in Pakistan before, guys who’ve played in the PSL, so [they’ll be] sharing those experiences. And then every day in a game of cricket, you’ve got to turn up and assess conditions and play accordingly and work on that.”And unlike the febrile partisanship that can take hold of these occasions when these two sides play each other home or away, this time around, they’ll find themselves greeted by a crowd who doubted they’d see this fixture played here, and are simply glad that it is. At least, for those lucky few who managed to secure tickets.

Saka & Palmer hybrid: Arsenal planning bid to sign £100k-p/w "superstar"

There is no doubt that, as things stand, Bukayo Saka is Arsenal’s most important player.

Despite still being just 23 years old, the Hale End icon has already amassed a staggering tally of 70 goals and 71 assists in 263 appearances for the club.

On top of being a bona fide star for Mikel Arteta, the mercurial number seven is also one of England’s most important players and already has 44 senior caps to his name.

We are sure that there isn’t another player in the Three Lions squad the Arsenal faithful would rather have in their team, although we’re equally sure they wouldn’t mind nabbing Chelsea’s Cole Palmer as well.

So they should be delighted about reports heavily linking them with an international star who has been compared to both Saka and Palmer.

Arsenal target Saka & Palmer hybrid

There is still just under a month left until the summer transfer window comes to a close, but Arsenal have already been far busier than usual.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Andrea Berta has made six first-team additions so far, with the likes of Christian Norgaard and Noni Madueke coming to bolster the squad, while Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi have made their way to North London as marquee signings.

However, even though the Gunners have been more active than most fans expected they would be, the club still appear keen on making more additions to the team.

At least that is according to a recent report from Football Transfers, which reaffirms Arsenal’s concrete interest in Eberechi Eze.

In fact, it goes further than that, revealing that even though the potential sale of Fabio Vieira to VfB Stuttgart would have to be sorted first, an offer for the Crystal Palace star is ‘imminent.’

Interestingly, while the England ace has a release clause worth £68m in his current deal until August 15th, stories from earlier this month claimed that the North Londoners’ first offer will likely be worth around €60m, which is about £52m.

It’ll likely be a costly and complicated transfer to get over the line, but Eze has proven he’s worth the effort, especially as he’s been compared to both Saka and Palmer.

How Eze compares to Saka and Palmer

In this instance, the primary comparisons to Palmer and Saka stem from FBref, which analysed players in similar positions in the Premier League last season and concluded that the Crystal Palace star was the fourth most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Chelsea ace and the ninth most similar to the Hale End gem.

In the case of the North Londoners’ crown jewel, the underlying numbers included metrics such as non-penalty expected goals, passing accuracy, live passes, shots, tackles won, clearances, successful take-ons and more, all per 90.

The comparisons to Saka are particularly encouraging as it paints a picture of a player who has the ability to be just as devastating in attack, while also being willing and able to help out in defence, which sounds like just the sort of attacker Arteta loves.

With all that said, while the comparisons to his two compatriots are certainly a positive sign, they aren’t the only reason the Premier League runners-up should be going out to sign the former QPR gem.

Another, just as important reason would be his output last season, as in just 43 appearances, totalling 3303 minutes, the midfield “magician,” as dubbed by pundit Micah Richards, was able to score 14 goals and provide 11 assists.

In other words, the 27-year-old maintained an average of a goal involvement every 1.72 games, or every 132.12 minutes, for a team that finished the season in mid-table.

Ultimately, it might not be an easy transfer to pull off, but Eze is such an incredibly gifted player that Arsenal should be doing all they can to sign him, especially given the comparisons to Saka and Palmer.

Arsenal can hand Arteta his own Isak-level signing in £100m Eze alternative

The incredible international could be a real game-changer for Arsenal.
