Leeds "well-placed" to sign £6m+ ace who's similar to Phillips and Tanaka

Leeds United are thought to be “well-placed” to complete the signing of a £6.8m-rated midfielder this summer, as the Whites eye key reinforcements to stay in the top flight.

Leeds eyeing Premier League-ready signings

Daniel Farke’s men are basking in the glory of sealing promotion from the Championship back to the Premier League, following two seasons in England’s second tier. It appears to be harder than ever for promoted teams to avoid the drop at the first attempt, highlighting the importance of Leeds and 49ers Enterprises nailing their summer transfer business, bringing in players who are ready to hit the ground running.

With the error-prone Illan Meslier no longer feeling like the Whites’ long-term solution between the sticks, a top-quality goalkeeper will be required this summer, and Wolves stopper Sam Johnstone is reportedly keen on moving to Elland Road. Meanwhile, FC Augsburg ‘keeper Finn Dahmen has also been mentioned as an alternative option to the Englishman.

In terms of possible outfield additions, Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund has been linked with a switch to Leeds, which would be an eye-catching piece of business. Granted, the Dane has struggled at Old Trafford this season, but he still has 25 goals in 90 appearances for the Red Devils overall, and seven in 22 caps for Denmark.

Leeds "well-placed" to sign Hidemasa Morita

According to Record [via Sport Witness], Leeds are “well-placed” to sign Sporting CP ace Hidemasa Morita at the end of the season, potentially snapping him up for just £6.8m.

The 29-year-old has to decide if he wants to sign a new Sporting deal this summer, with his current contract there expiring in the summer of 2026, leaving the Portuguese giants running out of time to cash in. He is believed to be tempted by a move to the Premier League.

Morita could be such a strong signing for Leeds ahead of their return to the top flight, having now racked up 112 appearances for Sporting, winning the Primeira Liga title last season. He is also a 40-cap Japan international.

At 29, he could add great experience and competition for places at the base of the Whites’ midfield, making them as hard to play through as possible, as they prepare to face some of the best teams in Europe in 2025/26.

Playing time has been more limited for Morita this term, with only 11 starts coming his way in the league, so he may feel that now is the right time for a new challenge, testing himself in the Premier League.

Morita is statistically a similar player to Kalvin Phillips and Ao Tanaka, according to Football Transfers, which could excite Leeds fans, given the latter’s popularity at Elland Road and Phillips’ incredible time in Yorkshire.

Sky Sports: Chelsea in talks to sign £50m+ forward with "electric pace"

Chelsea are now showing “concrete interest” in signing a winger with “electric pace”, and they have entered talks over a summer deal, according to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg.

Blues keen to bolster attacking options

Several top Premier League clubs are looking to bring in a new striker, and the Blues are no exception, given that Nicolas Jackson has struggled in front of goal for large parts of the season, despite finding the back of the net against Everton on Saturday.

Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap is among the main targets, with the west Londoners leading the race for the Englishman, who is set to be available for £30m this summer, now the Tractor Boys’ relegation from the top flight has been confirmed.

Not only is Enzo Maresca keen to bring in a new striker, but the manager is also looking at bolstering his options out wide, and talks have been opened over a deal for AC Milan’s Rafael Leao, while the same report states Juventus star Kenan Yildiz is also of interest.

Chelsea are looking at multiple targets from the Serie A, and they are also considering options from the Bundesliga, with Sky Sports reporter Plettenberg taking to X to reveal they have now opened talks for Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens.

Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Bynoe-Gittens in action

The Blues have expressed a “concrete interest” in signing the winger, as they “believe a talented English player should be playing in his home country”, and talks are ongoing with his management over a potential summer move.

Dortmund are open to offers in the region of €50m – €60m (£43m – £51m), and such is their level of interest, the west Londoners are willing to double Gittens’ salary.

"Electric" Gittens impressing at Dortmund

It has not been the best of seasons for Dortmund, who have fallen short of expectations in the Bundesliga, but the English winger has been a shining light, picking up eight goals and four assists in 29 league matches.

The starlet has also shown some promising signs in the Champions League, scoring four goals in the competition prior to Dortmund’s exit, while picking up one assist.

Not only that, but football scout Ben Mattinson is clearly a fan of the 20-year-old, praising him for his pace, while also claiming he could have more potential than Paris Saint-Germain star Bradley Barcola.

There are clear signs that Gittens could be destined for the very top, so it is exciting news that Chelsea are making moves to secure his signature.

Flattened by Archer, lifted by Head: Weatherald's wild Test debut

A two-ball duck, a few nervous moments, a rapid opening stand with Head in the chase were all part of Weatherald’s Test debut

For Jake Weatherald, Perth was a remarkable start to a Test career.Less than 48 hours after being presented his cap by David Warner and trying to keep his emotions under control while wanting to “scream and jump up and down,” he was celebrating a victory. Between times he had overcome the stresses of being on a pair, and pondering what it could mean for his future, opened with two different partners – neither of them the expected figure – and had a front row seat to the start of one of more spectacular Test innings ever.”It was a very strange game,” he said, which still sounded like an understatement.Related

As it transpired, Weatherald did not need to open at the very start of the Test so had time to soak in the atmosphere in the field as Mitchell Starc took seven wickets, but he was out there before tea on the opening day. Such was his focus on what was to come, he hadn’t fully realised it wasn’t Usman Khawaja walking out with him due to suffering back spasms, but rather Marnus Labuschagne.Weatherald said there had not been discussion between him and Khawaja over who would face the first ball. Then when Labuschagne asked if he wanted it, Weatherald took the opportunity to get the moment out of the way. Two balls later, he was laid flat out in the crease by a Jofra Archer thunderbolt that trapped him lbw.It was a moment that prompted a few words from the England fielders when Australia’s chase began, this time with Travis Head having come out alongside Weatherald. “It was actually pretty friendly,” Weatherald said. “It was more about Marnus not taking the first ball in my first innings, which I agreed with.”I was like, ‘yeah, you’re right, boys.’ Probably should have taken it for me. But it was all fun and games. I don’t think they were too worried about me, to be fair. I think they were more worried about Heady and the rest of the boys coming in.”Second time around, Head took the first delivery from Archer. Sitting on his pair, Weatherald was forced to sweat through 10 balls before, to huge cheers around Perth Stadium, working one off his body through square leg.Jake Weatherald was blown off his feet by Jofra Archer to fall for a duck•Getty Images”Obviously it wasn’t the greatest way of starting your Test debut but, at the same time, I was super pumped to be out there and I still believed that I had the game to go out there and obviously compete,” he said. “Once I got that second opportunity, I was just like, well, if this is my last time to hit a ball for Australia, I’m going to make sure that I do it my way.”I was lucky that I felt as though I moved really well and probably a bit unlucky in the end to get out the way I did. I felt as though I showed myself that I can move well against really good bowlers on obviously quite a tricky wicket.”Two deliveries after getting off the mark, his first boundary came with a controlled edge down to deep third. However, for a few moments next ball that appeared to be his lot when he was given caught behind to what the on-field umpire deemed to be an inside edge. For just the second time in his career, Weatherald was able to use the DRS, although he needed some reassurance from Head.

“It was an amazing thing to be a part of. Just to say that I’ve been a part of one of those innings of Travy’s is pretty cool”Weatherald on Head’s scintillating century in the chase

“I didn’t think about walking off, but I definitely felt like I heard a noise. So I was a bit rattled by that. And sometimes you can’t always feel the ball, especially on the inside edge.”I’ve done one unsuccessful review at a Big Bash game. So after that experience, I was pretty rattled about getting it wrong. Once Heady came down, he said, ‘I reckon it’s hit your back hip’. I sort of said, ‘well, that’s all I’ve heard.’ He sort of calmed me down a bit. But, yeah, there was probably a little bit of just [in Shield] cricket, you walk off and your day’s done sort of thing.”Weatherald’s eventual dismissal came via a top edge to a short delivery he tried to pull that glanced off his helmet and looped to cover. The final tally of 23 off 34 balls won’t jump out when the game is reviewed in the future, but the opening stand of 75 in just 11.3 overs with Head had broken the back of the 205-run chase. England’s shoulders had already slumped. It had been a partnership between former South Australia team-mates, and Weatherald could not help but be in awe of what Head produced.”It was amazing to watch,” he said. “I’ve been quite vocal about being very envious of Trav and the way he goes about his batting. He walks out there with an ability to be clear and calm and to put pressure on the bowlers no matter what the situation is. To make a hundred when the highest score after that was just over 50 really, it’s amazing skill to walk out there and shut out the external noise.”Obviously the Barmy Army were very vocal, and 200 felt a long way away with the fact that we’d only made 140-odd [132] in the first innings. It was one of those things, the way he walks out and bats and just has complete freedom is something that I envy a lot.”It’s something that gave me a lot of confidence at the other end, [knowing] I’ve just got to commit to what I’m doing and I’ll be successful as well. It helped me a lot and it sort of put a lot more emphasis on him really and just let me go about my thing. It was an amazing thing to be a part of. Just to say that I’ve been a part of one of those innings of Travy’s is pretty cool.”

England's withdrawal is a slap to Pakistan's face

The Pakistan side has toured the world more than any other since the pandemic began, hoping for reciprocity – which has not materialised

Osman Samiuddin22-Sep-2021Here is a list. It is of cricketers who have played the most international games away from home in the time of the pandemic.Eight of the top ten are Pakistan players. Pakistan might not be the biggest draw in cricket, though they are enough of one in England to have been invited for bilateral contests in five of the last six years, and enough of one for games with India to regularly feature in ICC press releases about being the most-watched ever. Two of the top three in that list – and arguably all three of Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Rizwan – would walk into any national side’s squad. Into any T20 league too, including, if it was allowed, the IPL. Babar and Afridi, especially, are bona fide superstars. They are players you’d pay to watch.Related

In the 18 months or so since Covid hit in a big way, these three have toured England twice, played a full tour in New Zealand, played a white-ball series in South Africa, Tests and T20Is in Zimbabwe, and then Tests and T20Is in the West Indies. If the world had corners, they would have been to all of them.At a time when, for much of the world, air travel has represented a serious health threat, they have flown on commercial planes, on chartered planes, through large, busy airports. They have then lived through some of the strictest periods of isolation; for ten days in England last year; for 14 days in New Zealand, when the only time they could open their hotel-room doors was to pick up a tray of food; for ten days in England again this summer. The intensity of those periods of isolation has since eased. In each of South Africa, Zimbabwe and the West Indies, for instance, they had to undergo three days of isolation before they could get out. But it adds up quickly, and New Zealand apart – where there were no restrictions once isolation was over – they have had to live in biosecure bubbles of varying stringency over six tours. On some of these tours they have not even been allowed out of their hotels. They have gone through it in silence. Part of it is because Pakistani players don’t talk about mental health, and so, though we know it must have had an impact, we have no idea of the extent of it. Shan Masood did talk a little but he’s an exception. Pakistan’s players have also gone through it all out of compulsion because there is no players’ body to articulate and represent their views, and more importantly, to protect their right to air those views. The PCB agrees to a tour, the players have little choice but to agree, because, to its enduring shame, Pakistan cricket remains an insecure place of employment for a player. Speaking out about bubble fatigue, or voicing concerns about well-being and acting on those concerns means risking a place in the side.ESPNcricinfo LtdQuite a few of them have contracted Covid in this time, yet they have continued, selling their labour here, there and everywhere. They are never paid especially well for it, yet off the back of that very labour other boards have also profited. These players helped save a summer last year in England. They not only did not ditch South Africa when their original tour, in September-October 2020, was postponed because of the pandemic, they made sure to return to fulfil that obligation in six months. And they tacked on an extra T20I, recognising that CSA had been hit by England’s abrupt departure earlier that season. They played Zimbabwe, one of the three most neglected Full Members, in not one but two series. They would have played the other two – Ireland and Afghanistan – as well, had it not been impossible for the ECB to find space in their calendar to allow use of their grounds, or had the Taliban not taken over Afghanistan. In this time, Pakistan have been the most frequent contributors to ensuring that cricket continues around the world. They didn’t do it solely out of the goodness of their hearts, or out of a sense of wider responsibility to the game. They expected reciprocity. They expected that their sacrifices would pave the way for the final step of the return to international cricket to Pakistan: the visit of teams such as England, New Zealand and Australia.Instead, what they have got from the ECB and its players is not just a withdrawal from a tour and an apology, but the middle finger. The fans and the PCB, of course, but most of all, a finger to those at the very front end of this: Babar, Afridi and the players, because it is their mental and physical health that has been at most risk in all those days of travel and competition. For all the days spent in isolation, away from their families, from their homes, for all the admonishment in New Zealand, for all the accommodation made in England this year in the wake of the Covid outbreak within the England camp, a middle finger, right back at them. What they have got is a reminder that the Big Three’s real mistake in 2014 was to put out a position paper and attempt to formalise the new order. All they needed to do was simply start playing as if the new order existed.Pakistan have toured England twice since the pandemic hit, last playing to packed stadiums in July this year•Getty ImagesFor example, let’s be generous and give Cricket Australia’s cancellation of their Test against Afghanistan its moment. But the pandemic has hit their scheduling with a – help me out here – pattern? They have toured England, and not hosted the T20 World Cup but hosted India. They pulled out of a tour to South Africa because they were worried about the health of their players during what was the second wave of the pandemic there, but the day after that decision, were happy to issue NOCs for players to go to the IPL in India (where a second wave was beginning) based on the biosecurity protocols of the previous IPL, held in a different country, during a different phase of the pandemic.England have pulled out of tours to Bangladesh and Pakistan but have squeezed in eight Tests against India this year and are smarting from not playing one more; and are willing to field an under-strength side and risk a player boycott to get to a country that has shut its borders harder than any other save New Zealand for three more Tests this year.Officially, the Big Three was disbanded back in February 2017. Since then, nearly half of all Australia’s international matches have been against England and India; a third of England’s have been against the other two; and 35% of India’s have been against the other two. What Pakistan have got is the irony of a Big Three board cancelling a bilateral series, while still being a Big Three board that wants more bilateral cricket in the next calendar at the expense of an extra ICC event (with the support of the ICC chair, by the way). An extra ICC event that offers a majority of Full Members a more reliable guarantee of revenue than the currently empty promises of bilateral cricket the Big Three make to those teams, because what the Big Three really mean by more bilateral cricket is bilateral cricket among themselves. What Babar, Afridi and Pakistan cricket have got, above all else, is a reminder of how broken international cricket already was before the pandemic broke it further. This is the epiphany that struck Ramiz Raja, the PCB chairman, on Tuesday, when he responded to a question about what the PCB could do next: “Withdrawal doesn’t have an answer, frankly speaking.”Pakistan has no real recourse to recouping the losses incurred by these two withdrawals other than to bear it. They cannot go to the ICC because, hello, there is no such thing really as the ICC, not beyond, as senior Australian journalist Gideon Haigh has often put it, an event-management company. Instead the real governors of the game are the very same ones whose middle finger Pakistan, along with the rest of cricket, are staring at.

Three Options Dodgers Could Consider at Third Base Without Max Muncy

The Los Angeles Dodgers have lost third baseman Max Muncy for an indefinite amount of time thanks to a bone bruise suffered Wednesday night.

While the timeline for his return is unknown (though Muncy shared informally that he expects to be out at least six weeks) the Dodgers have to make a decision regarding the newly opened spot in their lineup. In 81 games this season, Muncy is slashing .250/.375/.457, with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs. As usual, he's providing lots of power and on-base prowess while being a below-average defender with plenty of strikeouts. That's who he is at this point in his career.

The Dodgers have a $10 million club option on Muncy for 2026, so if they were able to find a longer-term solution at the hot corner, they could decline that and make him a free agent.

Los Angeles has options for what to do in the absence of their longtime third baseman. Below is a look at three potential replacements.

Kiké Hernandez (In-house)

Hernandez is almost certain to get the first crack at replacing Muncy. The 12-year veteran has spent nine years of his career in Los Angeles and is a trusted member of the organization. A pure utility man, he can play all over the diamond. He's spent time at third base over the years and has nine appearances there in 2025.

This would be the "hold serve" option. The Dodgers have enough offense that his .204/.270/.383 slash line wouldn't hurt them much. He'd play adequate defense and has a penchant for coming through in the clutch. He also wouldn't cost them anything in prospects to acquire like other options will.

Eugenio Suarez (Trade)

Suarez would be the swing-for-the-fence option. The Diamondbacks slugger would require a haul of prospects, given that he's one of the National League's best power hitters and would be coming from a division rival. The 33-year-old is in the final year of his contract and is playing like it. He is slashing .250/.319/.555 with 26 home runs and 69 RBIs. The latter two numbers both rank second in the NL.

The Diamondbacks wouldn't surrender Suarez easily but they'd likely relish the chance to prune L.A.'s loaded farm system in exchange for a rental, especially since Arizona has top prospect Jordan Lawlar waiting in the wings to take over at the hot corner.

Nolan Arenado (Trade)

Everyone has known for months that the Cardinals would love to move Arenado, who has a no-trade clause, and he'd almost certainly welcome a trade back to his Southern California home. The eight-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove-winner would be a major upgrade over Muncy defensively, though he isn't the hitter he once was. So far in 2025, he's slashing .247/.306/.395 with 10 home runs and 41 RBIs in 80 games.

Arenado had three years and $74 million left on his contract entering the 2025 season, so St. Louis would likely have to eat some of that to get anything of value from the Dodgers. L.A. could drive a hard bargain to take on the 34-year-old.

Revealed: Lionel Messi reached complete agreement to rejoin Barcelona in 2023 with official contract drafted

Lionel Messi reportedly reached a complete agreement to rejoin Barcelona in 2023 and an official contract was drafted to welcome back their greatest legend, but the move never materialised. Messi left his boyhood club in 2021 as a free agent after spending almost two decades there. He then completed a high-profile free transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, where he spent two years before heading to Inter Miami in the United States.

  • Messi didn't get proper goodbye

The Argentine legend was prevented from saying his goodbyes on the field in Catalunya when announcing an emotional departure from the Liga giants in 2021 after his contract expired. With Barcelona unable to fund a contract extension at that point due to severe financial constraints, Messi left for Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent.

His stint in the French capital lasted for two years and in between, he completed his lifelong dream of winning the World Cup with Argentina as he led La Albiceleste to their third title in Qatar.

Homecoming almost went through in 2023

According to , Messi expressed his desire to return to Barcelona for the first time in January 2023 when he got in touch with then-Blaugrana manager Xavi Hernandez. The former Barcelona team-mates enjoyed great success together as players, and Xavi believed that Messi's return to the team would further elevate the standard of the squad, which ultimately went on to win the 2022-23 La Liga title.

Over the next few months, the duo kept in touch and constantly spoke to each other to make the homecoming happen. Xavi even spoke to Messi's father Jorge and informed club president Joan Laporta, who was excited at the prospect of Messi returning to the club. Xavi was also told by director of football Matheu Alemany that La Liga had given the nod to the transfer.

  • The sudden collapse in talks

adds that everything was going as planned and the Catalan giants even drafted a two-year contract for Messi to sign as soon as he became a free agent in the summer of 2023. However, things drastically changed in April when Jorge Messi called Xavi with a devastating update: "They tell me it is not going to happen, that La Liga does not give the approval."

Barcelona soon changed their stance as they understood that bringing back Messi wouldn't be financially feasible for them, while complying with La Liga player registration rules. Messi eventually grew tired of waiting and agreed to join Inter Miami instead.

Can Messi still comeback to Barcelona?

There is no possibility of Messi rejoining Barcelona on a permanent basis, as he continues to chase the American dream in MLS with Inter Miami. He recently committed to a new three-year contract that will take him beyond his 40th birthday and through the 2028 season in the U.S.

Barcelona have also distanced themselves from a loan move for Messi in the MLS offseason, with Laporta saying in a recent interview: "Leo Messi’s return as a player is something just not realistic. As of now, he has a contract with Inter Miami. The club is building a project for the present and future. It's complicated, and if you live in the past you hardly move forward."

Messi will be back in action for the Herons on November 29 as they take on New York City FC in the Eastern Conference final. The 38-year-old is only two matches away from leading Miami to their maiden MLS Cup title.

'What I will not tolerate' – Pedro Porro hits back at Spurs fans after Fulham defeat as he insists 'there can always be mistakes'

Pedro Porro has hit out at Tottenham Hotspur fans on his Instagram story, accusing the Spurs faithful of disrespecting his team-mates in the club's humiliating 2-1 defeat by Fulham. Thomas Frank's side have been pitiful at home this season and were again on the losing side, prompting boos from the stands in north London directed at goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

  • Vicario howler leads to fan jeers

Spurs were again defeated at home as the pressure continues to mount on their new Danish head coach. Finding themselves down 2-0 after just six minutes, Spurs were already chasing the game and could only claw back one goal in the second half through Mohammed Kudus. It marked yet another disappointing day for the club who were thrashed last week by bitter rivals Arsenal and conceded five in an eight-goal thriller in France against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.

Taking a lot of the ire from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium terraces was Vicario, who was at fault for Harry Wilson’s goal. The Italian had carried the ball wide and could only clear the ball as far as Josh King in the Cottagers’ midfield. The teenager set the ball to the Welsh winger who was able to curl an effort from distance into the gaping goal. Following the mistake, the Spurs fans booed Vicario whenever he got the ball and the desperately toxic atmosphere at the club continues to worsen.

After the game, Frank defender his players and slammed the fans who vented their fury at the squad. He told : “I didn't like that our fans booed at him [Vicario] straight after and a few times he touched the ball. They can't be true Tottenham fans because everyone supports each other when you are on the pitch. And we do everything we can to perform. After, fair enough, boo, no problem. But not during. That's unacceptable in my opinion."

Porro hits out at Spurs fans

Following suit, Porro has also offered his thoughts on the booing. He took to social media to criticise the ‘disrespect’ shown to Vicario and was unhappy that the Italian had been on the end of severe sticks by his own supporters.

On his Instagram story, Porro said: “Football is emotions. In football, as it life, there can always be mistakes, what I will not tolerate is hearing disrespect from the fans to my teammates, hence my frustration at the end of the game.”

He added that the Spurs players “will get up” and sent a reminder that they won the Europa League last season, despite their league performances being dire – finishing 17th in the Premier League.

“We remind you six months ago, everything was so bad, and in the end it is not how it begins, but how it ends. To the true Spurs fan, I love you.”

  • Spurs in crisis

Unfortunately for Porro, Spurs are not in the Europa League this season and, unless they pull of a miracle and win the Champions League, their place in Europe’s top competition next season is already slipping away.

Also, by claiming that fans that boo are not ‘true fans’, the Spanish defender may risk aggravating a frustrated fan base yet further. Spurs fans would be more than justified to demand that Porro and his team-mates start performing at the required level, rather than posting messages on social media.

The reality is, Spurs have been incredibly poor in recent weeks and three defeats in six days will do little to win over an exasperated fanbase. Two defeats in as many games against London rivals will have only deepened the grievances in the north of the capital and Spurs have lots of work to do to ensure they do not slip yet further down the division.

    Frank in trouble

Frank is in desperate need of a positive result against Newcastle next week if he is to remain in the Spurs dugout. The Magpies will not provide an easy proposition either, having bounced back this weekend with a 4-1 thumping of Everton. If the results do not improve, it is difficult to see the former Brentford man lasting too much longer.
